New Music: Get Him Eat Him: "2x2"
We were fans of once-Providence, now everywhere-based Get Him Eat Him's debut album on Absolutely Kosher, and "2x2", the opening track from their second LP, shows that they've grown in the past two years. Lead singer/songwriter (and, yes, Pitchfork contributor) Matt LeMay's voice goes from the processed vocal sound that marked the first record, to something much cleaner and clearer. The dry, jittery edges from debut Geography Cones have been replaced with something warmer and wetter here-- and it's not just the work of guest trumpeter Zach Condon (Beirut). LeMay just lets more of his voice come out, and it occasionally goes into its higher range. Each instrument echoes his vocal melody in different ways throughout: little delicate picked guitar, bold brass, humming organ. The 2x2 of the title are the footsteps of its protagonists, and while the track is nuanced in execution, its story is simple, youthful: Fuck this town, let's stay and fight, it's us vs. them.
