New Music: Gui Boratto: "Hera (The Field remix)" [Stream]

Given that the debut albums from Swedish nu-trance dude the Field and Brazilian techno dude Gui Boratto are Kompakt's biggest records so far this year, getting the former to remix the latter is a no-brainer. The results aren't entirely unlike what you'd expect them to be: The Field's Axel Willner takes Boratto's melancholic chug and smears it into the kind of whiteout glare that characterizes the sprawling, shivering From Here We Go Sublime. It's heady stuff, especially given the way insistent 16th-note patterns steal the downbeat's thunder and replace it with a kind of palpitating uncertainty. To quote one of Willner's own songs, it's like gliding over the ice-- only to feel the surface cracking beneath your skates, black depths beckoning below.
