New Music: Kelly Willis: "Success" (Iggy Pop cover) [Stream]

It's amazing how easily and naturally Iggy Pop's loony-bin glampunk "Success", from 1977's Lust for Life, translates to the barroom. Country singer Kelly Willis and her band don't do much to change the song, nor do they need to: as produced by Chuck Prophet, it's a capable crowd pleaser, with an organ making that central guitar theme sound positively Buffett-esque (this is likely the only time you'll read a Pitchfork reference to Jimmy that's even remotely positive). The call-and-response between Willis and her band is never as dogged in its copycattiness as the original, but it does retain the song's goofiness: Willis even starts to crack up singing "Here comes my Chinese rug." Their version is never as rowdy as it should be-- I wanna hear beer bottles smashing on chickenwire screen-- but that doesn't mean it's lifeless, just that Willis isn't going to hop like a frog.
