New Music: My Brightest Diamond: "Naturally" (Huey Lewis and the News cover) [Stream]

If you've ever had trouble recognizing whether someone was being ironic, get ready for the confusion of your life. Forthcoming Huey Lewis and the News tribute album Are You Still With Me?!, which boasts contributions from several notable indie bands, apparently began "as kind of a joke". So there's that. But the decision by My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden to cover "Naturally"-- a particularly cheesy deep cut from Lewis and the News' 1986 tee-off Fore!-- suggests she might not be kidding.

If she is, at least she goes all out. Warden's vocals replace Lewis's husky San Francisco frankness with bird-like flutters from the effete Jeff Buckley school. Where the original track was a cappella, Worden chooses to include guitar and other instruments along with doo-wop harmonies. Previously, we didn't think it was worth mentioning when we got the tip about Worden's karaoke rendition of "I Will Always Love You", which opts for Whitney over Dolly. But between these two songs, the possibilities for a follow-up to 2006's Bring Me the Workhorse get more intriguing every day.

Unless we're fucking with you.
