New Music: Studio: "Information Mix" [MP3]

Earlier this year we reviewed Studio's fantastic compilation Yearbook 1, which combined the West Coast album with a separately released single to summarize where the Swedish duo had been to that point. The sound of the record-- shimmering guitar tones, light and playful rhythms, a decided lean in the direction of 1980s synthesized smoothness-- has become more prominent since, with similarly-themed grooves by A Mountain of One, Map of Africa, and Sorcerer bubbling up. We've also seen Studio remixed by Prins Thomas and Todd Terje. West Coast was reissued last month on its own and is being distributed in North America. It's worth picking up.

Gearing up for a fall promotional push that will include live shows and videos, Studio put together this 50-minute DJ mix, which nicely delineates the band's stylistic tendencies. It's not going to win converts from anyone skeptical about the "Balearic revival"-- in fact, it positively wallows in the warm, relaxed, and vaguely spacey end of the pool. But those with an itch for such textures will find that this scratches it. No track list is forthcoming, so trainspotters are on their own.
