New Music: Radiohead: "Unravel (Pocket Mix)" [MP3/Stream]

Yeah yeah, we report on Radiohead everytime they sneeze, or put out a new pay-what-you-want album and then sign to Dave Matthews' record label, or do something as humdrum as put on a webcast featuring awesome covers of New Order and Björk. But it's not as if we're stalking their every move. Or at least, not theirs alone. We try to keep our ears perked as well for whatever anyone else might be doing involving Radiohead, including, in this case, Richard Jankovich-- the frontman for "Queer as Folk" theme-providers the Burnside Project and also a remixer/producer under his own Pocket moniker.

As Pocket, Jankovich has remixed Radiohead's aforementioned Björk cover, "Unravel", from the Icelandic songstress' 1997 album Homogenic. Where Radiohead's version builds from spare beginnings (little more than Thom Yorke's voice and keyboards), Jankovich lets droning tendrils of noise poke into all that space, setting a thumping beat beneath. He chops up Yorke's vocal in other places, eventually adding squishy synths, and then introduces Radiohead to Björk herself. Which, y'see, is news.
