Oddball material of all kinds has been coming from the Why? camp-- a cover by Nick Thorburn of Islands, a surreal one-off remix from Boards of Canada-- and the trend continues here with a half-speed rendition of the Cure's "Close to Me". The hooks are sanded down and droning guitar distortion is the main sonic element, while the descending four-note refrain is barely hinted at. It's not entirely successful, but it does manage to alter the song's fundamental character; against this lethargic, druggy background, Yoni Wolf doesn't sound like someone you want to get too close to.
