"Sound of Kuduro" [ft. M.I.A. and DJ Znobia]

Video: Buraka Som Sistema: "Sound of Kuduro" [ft. M.I.A. and DJ Znobia]

When M.I.A. wasn't knocking on the doors of your Hummer Hummer or quoting the Modern Lovers on "Bamboo Banga", the opening track from last year's beloved Kala, she was giving third-world shout-outs: "Somalia, Angola, Ghana, Ghana, Ghana, hey!". The streets of Angola, a former Portuguese colony, are the source of Kuduro, the sweaty fusion of African rhythms and house electronics that gave Lisbon's Buraka Som Sistema a breakout hit last year with "Yah!". As BSS works on a full-length debut tentatively titled Black Diamond, the group has spent some time in Angola making a video for the track "Sound of Kuduro". M.I.A., who toured with BSS, and Angola-based DJ Znobia appear on both the song on the video-- "Sound of Kuduro knocking at your door," M.I.A. proclaims over gaudy synths and sampled African percussion-- but the dance moves here are worth keeping your eye on the clip. I mean, I can do all that stuff, I just thought other people might be impressed by it.

[Black Diamond is forthcoming; label TBD]
