New Music: Dominique Leone: "Duyen" [MP3/Stream]

You know that Balearic/prog/disco intersection I was mentioning the other day? Recording with Hans-Peter Lindstrøm and 10 other collaborators, Dominique Leone is responsible for one of that post-genre genre's most fully realized expressions to date, "Clairevoyage-- A Medley Performed by the 16th Rebels of Mung", from Leone's Feedelity self-titled EP. Leone, a longtime Pitchfork contributor, occupied most of the rest of the disc peeking into Brian Wilson's bedroom as accompanied by Todd Rundgren, Harry Nilsson, Shostakovich, and whichever is your favorite Animal Collective member. "Duyen", from Leone's forthcoming self-titled album for Lindstrøm's new Strømland label, is in keeping with that material, as watery keyboards bobble amid ringing telephones, Theremin-like alien noises, and shuffling percussion. Leone's voice-- high, clear, enviable-- lays out a classically informed melody as if from leprechaun land, though his concern seems to be the familiar pop matter of a girl from school. Men's voices on walkie-talkies chirp in the background. OK, Dom, pick up the phone.
