New Music: The Gluons: "The Modern Late at Nights" [MP3/Stream]
The Gluons are a noisy two-piece from Dayton, Ohio, which is not only the hometown of Guided By Voices, but also where some of the members of nearby Times New Viking grew up. On "The Modern Late at Nights", from forthcoming debut Meet the Gluons, singer/guitarist Andrew Ashbrook and bassist Matthew Rose kick up a scuzzy yet tuneful racket not far off from Times New Viking's lo-fi noise-pop. Like another two-man band, seminal synth-ravagers Suicide, the Gluons back their bleary riffs and largely indecipherable vocals with a drum machine. The indistinct lyrics are appropriate given that the guitar chords don't sound far off from garage-rock oldies like "Louie, Louie" or "Wild Thing", albeit broken up into more nimble-fingered phrasing, not unlike the introduction to the Beatles "Daytripper". Through the scratchy guitar-and-synth din, Ashbrook howls, "I was so surprised." If their name sounds sort of familiar, you may remember reading about these dudes in physics class.
