New Music: Javelins: "Out on the Sand" [MP3/Stream]

Diane & the Javelins were one of the groups that recorded for pioneering UK producer Joe Meek in the 1960s. Javelins are a Detroit indie-rock three-piece with two members who also play in Thunderbirds Are Now!. "Out on the Sand", from the Javelins' forthcoming Heavy Meadows, is probably too much of a fist-pumper to be a Meek production, but that's hardly a bad thing when you're talking about a catchy, briskly strummed anthem with hints of the spastic post-punk rhythms and pealing keyboards of Q and Not U. Bending lead guitar fills overlay the chiming chord progression, as singing drummer Matt Rickle describes a fleeting moment of happiness shared with someone in the song's title setting. "If you're not too sure, then we'll just stay here," Howard decides, after a wordless oh-oh hook. At the bridge, the drums careen into a textured, slow-burning guitar solo. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but then, neither does the idea of inviting somebody out to the beach.
