Modest Mouse to Release New EP This Month
More unreleased material discovered amongst the socks

According to Billboard.com, Issaquah's finest, Modest Mouse, are preparing to release a new eight-song EP later this month. Last year, Up Records had announced plans to release at least two, and possibly three, 12-inches' worth of material from the band's Moon & Antarctica sessions, but only managed to get out "Night on the Sun," which culled four previously unreleased tracks from the Brian Deck-produced outing.

The new EP, mystifyingly titled Everywhere and His Nasty Parlor Tricks, presumably draws its material from those sessions as well. Among the eight tracks are "Here It Comes," "So Much Beauty in Dirt," "Three Inch Horses, Two Faced Monsters," and a song titled "The Air," a megamix of sorts which blends several older songs into a brand new entity. The disc will also include all of the tracks from the "Night on the Sun" 12-inch, including that record's title track, "I Came as a Rat (Long Walk Off a Short Dock)," "You're the Good Things" and "Willful Suspension of Disbelief." The EP is due out September 25th through Epic.

Frontman Issac Brock is also working sporadically on his solo project, Ugly Casanova, with Brian Deck, as he has been for the past hundred years or so. The fine publicity department of Sub Pop has said that the disc should be out in the first quarter of 2002. We are pessimistic.

As previously reported by Pitchfork, Modest Mouse will embark on a major U.S. tour this Friday at Portland, Oregon's Crystal Ballroom. Bands sharing the bills along the way will include ex-Bar-None/ex-Capricorn recording artists the Glands, crazy-ass art-punks Les Savy Fav, pop maestros the Shins, Portland psychedelicists Yume Bitsu, orch-pop kings the Flaming Lips, ax-men Built to Spill, and Neutral Milk audio-manglers the Music Tapes. Tsunami's Jenny Toomey Records 2xCD Solo LP
Anyone else find the assonance of "Toomey" incredibly fucking funny?

Finally, an antidote to the post-Tsunami blues! Jenny Toomey, former singer/songer/guitarist of such delectable bands as Tsunami, Liquorice, and Grenadine, is set to release her debut solo album, Antidote this fall. This will mark her first output since Tsunami's 1997 swan song, A Brilliant Mistake, and she has more than made up for her absence from the creative output realm with the sheer length of her new record: it's a double album.

Since A Brilliant Mistake, Toomey has had many irons in the fire with her various activities on the business tip of the music biz. After Tsunami's demise, she kept busy maintaining her Simple Machines label alongside fellow ex-Tsunamist Kristin Thomson. When the independent closed its doors in April of 1998, Toomey reinvented herself as the executive director of the Future of Music Coalition, an "activist organization dedicated to protecting artists' rights in these technologically tricky times." This role has brought Toomey into the spotlight as of late, with interviews and features in prestigious societal arenas of discourse such as CNN and Spin. These days, however, she's back making music, and her new album promises not only a return to form, but an expansion into new sonic boundaries.

Antidote's first disc, titled "Chicago," sports the production of Chicago recording whiz Dave Trumfio (Pulsars, the Handsome Family, Billy Bragg & Wilco), as well as lovely accompaniment provided by guest stars such as Edith Frost, Ida guitarist Dan Littleton, and Aluminum Group frontman John Navin. The second disc, "Nashville," was mixed by Nashville super-mixer Mark Nevers (Vic Chesnutt, LeAnn Rimes) for a decidedly contrasting (yet complimentary) vibe. "Nashville" contains spots by six members of Nashville's own Lambchop on pedal steel and piano. Both "Chicago" and "Nashville" will feature the violin stylings of player Jean Cook, and "Chicago" even contains, at moments, "a dozen trembling violins" at once! A humbling feat, if I do say so myself. Antidote is due out October 9th on Misra Records.

More Info on New Aphex Twin LP, Kind Of
So elusive you'd think he was illiterate

It's no secret that Aphex Twin knob-twiddler Richard D. James is releasing a new album on October 22nd. The big mystery lies in its cryptic title, Drukqs, and in the origin of the bizarre track names that have been leaked out. In response to massive fan outcry, an official press release containing an interview with James was recently sent out. Yeah, it's cryptic as all hell, and gives virtually no insight, but we thought you might want to see it anyway. Here goes nothing:

Why Drukqs?
it up to evryone to make their own interpretation.

So rumours of your retirement were greatly exaggerated? What made you change your mind?
the old mind was getting really slow and dull so I thought Id get a new one.

What have you been doing since Windowlicker was released?
playing around with human embryos that myself and my girlfriend made, before its illegal.

Where/when was the album recorded?
All over the place travelling,in some bank vaults and in the bath.

Is all the material new?
its the newest music available. actually its a compilation of all the fake aphex tracks found on the world.wide.wank,I didnt write any of them.

Will there be any singles?
Yes tomorrow, limited to 1 copy on my hard disk, my friend bought it on ebay which I think is on the internet.

The tracks have very bizarre titles, what do they mean?
kwrejgwekrjhwegkwegrkwerjbg

Have you worked with anyone else on this album?
Yeah, at the beginning of 1997 I adopted 3 goats on my farm in scotland and taught them how to write music, I upgraded one of the goats at the end of '98 with a hoof mod and its fucking serious man/woman.

Are there going to be any more collaborations with yourself and Chris Cunningham?
Well I think chris is too skinny at the moment and I cant bear working with skeletons so, he has to put on a considerable amount of weight on first.

Where did you get the idea for the cover?
while i was djing at the next rephlex party at 93ft east club end of august 2001.

Have you been listening to lots of classical music? Is this a sign that you're mellowing in your old age?
I have actually gone deaf from djing and so I cant listen to any music at all, im totally gutted, have learnt how to lip read and I can still mix records by smelling the grooves.

What is your dru(g)kq of choice?
what does dru(g)kq mean, I dont understand the question, sorry.

Are you planning any live shows? What surprises have you got instore?
Well Im playing on the national lottery in December as they offered me the rollover if nobody won it that week, seriously!

Napster, do you have an opinion on them.
Well I should do, I actually wrote the code for the precursor to napster and that bloke knicked it off me, im not bitter though, ive managed to download my entire catalogue off it when it worked, saved myself £'s

Is it true that you've written music for adverts under loads of different pseudonyms, can u give?
yes and other releases, stockhausen, mozart, xenakis, squarepusher, painjerk, parmigiani to name a few.

"We'd only ban someone for being boring"...What is the most boring record ever made, in your opinion?
drukqs by eric satie.

What is the relationship between Warp and Rephlex?
you dont wanna know man its fucking bad.

It is widely known that Radiohead's Kid A was widely influenced by your music, in particular 'Come As you Are'...What do you think of their new stuff and other contemporaries?
Well they widely agreed to pay me 70% of the widely royalties so, Im not complaining.

In a recent interview, Grant [from Rephlex] pointed out that there are 5 missing records in the Rephlex catalogue... mostly yours... will you ever release them?
Yes, next week, whos Grant?

Do you remember life before the internet?
I havent actually gone online yet, is it any good? who are you anyway?

What is your favourite gadget?
Oh it would have to be this endoscope I got from LOOT a couple of years ago, it had, had a fair bit of use mind you but its a one off model which can go inside your brain via your nostrils and tickle different regions of your body automatically, its got a USB connection and came bundled with some MAC software, its got a neuro reciever on one bit which can directly pick up various thoughts and signals that happen to be flying around whatever region you happen to be poking, it's so cool man.

What criterion do you have for releasing someone's records?
Well its usually based on sexual favours'n'stuff best not to go there.

You were once quoted as saying you weren't recording any new material cos you were 'sick of being ripped off'...who have you ripped off?
Ive never got sick of being sucked off, dont know what your on about, whats your name, youre weird?

White Stripes Sign with XL, Continue Tour
Hey, whatever happened to Foghat?

Scruffy blues duo the White Stripes have signed a three-record contract with XL Recordings. Jack and Meg White got their start out of Detroit on the smaller indie, Sympathy for the Record Industry. This changeover to UK management should be no surprise after the huge reception the White Stripes received two weeks ago by some of London's major periodicals, including The Guardian, The Times, and The Mirror. Some reports claimed that the White Stripes mania bowled over the British fans, declaring a musical revolution reminiscent of the Sex Pistols.

Meg and Jack White released White Blood Cells, their third album on Sympathy for the Record Industry, just over a month ago. XL will be re-releasing the White Stripes' earlier albums, including De Stijl and White Stripes. The UK label is also home to Basement Jaxx, Badly Drawn Boy, Prodigy, the Avalanches, and Capitol K. The Stripes will return to the U.S. to continue their tour of small clubs in early September. Dates:

Give your breath long-lasting freshness

Norman, Oklahoma's Starlight Mints are about to embark on a U.S. tour which will take them through the better part of September. Still riding the wave from last year's wonderful The Dream That Stuff Was Made Of, this quintet's blend of quirky pop spans the gambit from Bowie to fellow Oklahomans the Flaming Lips. Ming & FS Cross-Fade the Country
Let us take this moment to express our hatred for the term "luvved up"

Ming & FS will be touring throughout the fall in support of their new album, The Human Condition, which is set to be released by Om Records September 18th. On the new album, the NYC based DJ duo will expand their trademark "junkyard" sound from the hip-hop and drum-n-bass it already contains to include elements of two-step and house. In fact, don't be surprised if you find their new single, "Uncle Bubble," in the jungle section of your record store, race home, throw it on your turntable, and discover that instead of hard-ass d'n'b, you're hearing wuss-ass house music (true story!). Some folks who lent a helping hand to the new record are Ada Dyer (Naked Music), who sings in a sexy way; Omri, who was featured on Ming & FS's first album and beatboxes in a sexy way; Todd Simon (from Macy Gray's band), who plays trumpet in a sexy way; and Hero Ric, who also sings in a sexy way. Make your e connections at the following venues:

09-18 Los Angeles, CA - El Rey Theater
09-19 San Diego, CA - Canes
09-22 Seattle, WA - I-Spy
09-28 Minneapolis, MN - First Avenue

A Live Review and History of Fugazi
The Pitchfork Newswire drops, for a moment, its unbiased point-of-view

I always viewed the individual players of Fugazi as the four elements of the universe. Ian as the fire capable of scorching guitars and ears; Guy as the air, an all-encompassing presence with the power of benign summer days or hurricane madness; Joe as water, able to flow softly with basslines or to pound out driving forces; and Brendan as earth, providing a landscape not merely circular but at times mountainous.

All schoolboy metaphors aside, the story of Fugazi is nothing short of amazing. Since the sunset of the 80s, four gentlemen from Washington D.C. have become one of rock and roll's most amazing franchises. Fugazi formed a considerable fanbase early in their career through a mixture of punchy, gritty music, a do-it-yourself aesthetic for everything, and an eye for the common fan. Fugazi's extremely affordable shows and recordings are by now legendary, but at times, the band's politics have overshadowed their music. Of course, nothing inherently wrong exists in lauding the business side of the band-- more bands should take cues from Fugazi. But sometimes, lost in it all is the absolutely splendid guitar, bass, drum, and vocal interplay that the four pull off with inexplicable ease.

Fugazi are not easy to nail down. As a band, they've evolved from record to record at an astounding rate. Early poppier rock anthems have morphed into a highly artistic brand of rock music that few bands have the ability to rival. Their last LP, End Hits, explored musical collages while retaining a pleasing, although sometimes hidden pop sensibility. To fans of early Fugazi recordings, the result of a decade could be easy to accept. But if one listens closely enough, Fugazi have not become a new band; they've merely perfected their craft.

Growth like this only comes with time. But so do breakups. Fugazi have been at it for an eternity in band-years. Bands often become tired of the artistic outlet that is given them, sometimes branching to new outfits. This occurrence, paired with the fact that the last Fugazi record foreshadowed a possible disbanding, led many to wonder about the future of the band. Though the appearance of new songs at last summer's free D.C. shows gave a glimmer of hope, no fan was met with relief until the band recently announced they would release a new full-length in the fall of this year. Of course, a new record doesn't always signal a continuation of excellence. Bands reaching twilight stages rarely live up to former glory.

But this reporter sleeps well in Fugazi-land following their recent show at Fort Reno in Washington D.C. The unbelievable phenomenon of the Fugazi improv show continued to create marvel, and the new songs presented roared with potential. The sound of the new songs seemed more dynamic, if possible, than past material from Fugazi. A particular new Ian song ebbed and flowed with guitar energy numerous times. Rarely have I heard new material at concerts and been blown away, but some of these songs actually left me with that sentiment. Some of the songs also seemed more straightforward than Fugazi's more recent work. However, I didn't feel that the lack of complication signaled a regression.

This concert was more than just a reassurance of the Fugazi franchise. They are a-fucking-mazing live. The fact that no set list is ever prepared means that each member not only stores every song in his memory, but they're each able to determine from the start of another member which song is being played, and to immediately join in. A mixed bag of songs spanning their career erupted from their instruments and mouths, from "Waiting Room" to several End Hits favorites. And this enthralling performance as a whole says much more than the new songs do by themselves. It shows that Fugazi are still on top of their game. They enjoy making music, and they're still the best at what they do. While they verge on becoming a new band every day, the new incarnation always seems to top the previous one. Their future sound may be, at this stage, uncertain, but it is nonetheless exciting.

Apes Take Their Guitarless Show on the Road
Like evolution never happened

The boisterous D.C. quartet the Apes are set to tour in support of their first LP, The Fugue in the Fog, which hits stores on September 4th. The band signed to Les Savy Fav's Frenchkiss label earlier this year, and will share the stage with the adamant art-punks through the end of the year, beginning with a show at New York's Bowery Ballroom on November 1st

The Apes, who dress entirely in camouflage for performances, have exactly zero guitarists in their lineup, leaving them to ride full-tilt against the ears with thick organ and bass riffs, punishing drums and convulsive vocals. Vocalist Paul Weil leads the assault with a stage presence that's half-Tim Harrington, half-Robert Plant. Which brings to mind a further question: when will the Apes get ever sick of the Les Savy Fav comparisons?

Unwound, Faint to Play at Bloomington Fest
Don't look at us, we didn't name the fuckin' thing

Planning on getting drunk and sleeping in this Labor Day weekend? Well, go ahead and do that, but you also might want to consider checking out Bloomington Fest, a weekend-long multi-venue music and arts festival in Bloomington, Indiana.

Originally conceived as a way to enjoy a cheap weekend out, the ticket prices remain reasonably cheap, especially for the volume of artists involved. But it's not the same dorky emo bands and cheesy local hardcore outfits you generally see at "fests." An amazing number of bands you've actually heard of from the East and Midwest will be playing, notably Songs: Ohia, the Danielson Famile, the Faint, and Unwound. Unwed Sailor will also play their last show for quite some time at the Fest. Take a look at the Bloomington Fest website for information and a full schedule.

Innocence Mission Guitarist Completes Solo LP
That chick with the voice isn't on this one

Don Peris, guitarist and one third of the husband-and-wife-plus-some-bassist-guy trio the Innocence Mission, has completed his first solo album, Ten Silver Slide Trombones, for self-release. While the title indicates otherwise, the disc isn't a series of high school brass and percussion ensemble tunes. Instead, it picks up where the Innocence Mission's last album, Birds of My Neighborhood, left off-- but with Peris singing in place of his wife Karen. Naturally.

The Innocence Mission's distinctive, folky blend of beauty and melancholy will also be heard in stores on September 25th, with the release of Small Planes, a collection of b-sides and unreleased tracks. Look for it on the What Are Records label. Or don't. We're not your mom.

Ten Silver Slide Trombones tracklist:

01 Spin
02 Firefly
03 Catherine-Anne
04 Your Friend
05 Butterfly
06 Ten Silver Slide Trombones
07 Anytime at All
08 Help Me Out
09 Banjos and Trampolines
