Circulatory System Plans East Coast Tour
We need all the blood we can get right now

Olivia Tremor Control songwriter Will Cullen Hart is planning an east coast swing with his latest collective of musical misfits, Circulatory System. The band, which consists of all the members of OTC except The Bill Doss (as well as all members of Neutral Milk Hotel), is playing out in support of their recently released debut entitled, coincidentally enough, Circulatory System. The record was released in August on Hart's very own Cloud Recordings.

Fans of the band will be given a special opportunity at live shows, as Hart began releasing CDRs to sell at live performances. Each one features individual, hand-made artwork, as was the practice of the ancient Incan civilization, who also created lots of stuff. Lots of "individual, hand-made" stuff. The Green CD, for instance, includes remixes and alternate versions of songs from the album. And while you're back at the merch table, see if you pick up one of those limited edition Jeff Mangum brain cells for us. We hear they're in short supply.

Jenny Toomey Performs, Lectures
"What are you doing home this late? Didn't we say 11:30? Didn't we? Kristin and I have been worried sick! ...Are you drunk?! God DAMMIT!!! She's drunk, Kristin. You know, if you get pregnant out there, it's your ass!"

Jenny Toomey is heading out on a tour of bars and lecture halls nationwide. Yes, lecture halls. But no, Toomey won't exactly teach college kids that there's more to music than Dave Matthews; she'll speak on artist rights and copyright law. Then she'll perform at regular venues with her backup band. Expect to hear songs from her debut, double-disc solo album, Antidote, which was released last week on Misra Records.

Getting her start in bands like Grenadine and Liquorice, Toomey has built one hell of an indie rock resume over the years. After starting the influential Simple Machines label in the early 90s, she formed the seminal Tsunami with guitarist Kristin Thomson. Since then, she's co-authored An Introductory Mechanic's Guide to Putting Out Records, and seized the position of Executive Director for the Future of Music Coalition, a non-profit that addresses issues in music, technology, and law.

Le Nouveau Casino is no place to achieve enlightenment

San Francisco's raucous rock insurgents Zen Guerrilla are currently in the midst of a fairly extensive U.S. tour. Beastie Boys Plan, Headline Benefit Show
Tibet apparently no longer a stylish world issue

There have been a slew of concerts to benefit victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks, but they haven't exactly been hipster fare. Fortunately, the Beastie Boys have decided to change that by organizing two show in New York City, to be held on October 28th and 29th at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Proceeds from the show will benefit two charities: The New York Women's Foundation and the New York Association for New Americans. A number of artists are scheduled to appear, including fresh-faced rockers the Strokes, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Mos Def, Cibo Matto, Rival Schools, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the Roots, DJ Afrika Bambaataa, and the B-52's, who it seems no one had the heart to turn away. The Beasties will perform a "short hip-hop set" with beat-matching heartthrob Mix Master Mike. The full lineup for each night is available at the Beastie Boys website.

Iggy and the Stooges Release Lost Tapes
Without any recollection of ever having recorded them

A lot of bands have released collections of rarities and unreleased tracks over the years-- Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, the Who, Jimi Hendrix, and um, A Minor Forest, to name a few. These posthumous recordings provide a retrospective look at these now-classic performers as they began their careers.

Now, Iggy and the Stooges are releasing "one from the vault"-- a collection of rarities and jam session tapes. Bomp Records and Iggy Pop are sifting through old tapes in search of treasure. Thus far, they've found three songs that never made it onto albums ("Wild Love," "I Came from Nowhere" and "Old King Live Forever"). Bomp Records claims to have kept this material in their vaults, unmarked, for the past twenty years. I'll bet they were right next to that Misfits coffin.

Also included on the CD are some of the cover tunes that the band worked out during the lean, early days during jam sessions, including Cream's "I'm So Glad," Butterfield Blues Band's "Mellow Down Easy," Bob Dylan's "Ballad of Hollis Brown," and Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man." The album, entitled Wild Love, will be available for purchase October 23rd.

AM/FM Tours New England
That's in America, kids

Philadelphia's station-surfing lo-fi duo AM/FM have announced that, following their recent stint opening for Texas drone-poppers American Analog Set, they will play a handful of east coast dates at the end of this month. There's no word yet on whether the tour will extend beyond New England, but did state that "on the AM/FM band, anything can happen." (They didn't really say that; we just like making people look stupid.)

The guys recently released their second full-length, Getting into Sinking, on Polyvinyl Records. Their debut album, Mutilate Us, which was released last year, earned comparisons to everyone from pre-symphonic Flaming Lips to early Pavement

10-25 Providence, RI - Living Room
10-26 Philadelphia, PA - Swarthmore College
10-27 New Haven, CT - Tune Inn
10-28 Cambridge, MA - Middle East

Milemarker Tours the East and Midwest
No mile to be left unmarked in tour diary

Milemarker are on tour in Europe right now, but will be heading to the US for some dates in New York and the Midwest while making their way back to their hometown of Chicago. The four-piece, consisting of Dave Laney, Al Burian, Roby Newton, and Sean Husick, have released four albums, including their most recent, Anaesthetic, which was recently issued by Jade Tree.

With a name like Milemarker, one would expect them to be a Mark Lanegan-type band, singing trucking songs about driving all night and drinking perfume and shit. However, the sound of the band has been described as "future rhythmic" with an "atypical approach to political lyricism." Of course, that's just fancy words for 80s new wave.

10-22 New York, NY - Brownies
10-23 Washington, DC - Black Cat
10-24 Carrboro, NC - Go! Studios
10-25 Atlanta, GA - Eye Drum

Audiogalaxy Blocks Copyrighted Files
Aww, man, we were feeling so patriotic!

Looks like the RIAA is getting its way again. As of late last night, Audiogalaxy, which has rapidly replaced Napster as the web's most accessible MP3 trading source, has blocked the vast majority of its files. Virtually everything with a copyright is now prevented from downloading, although a handful of artists who have specifically authorized the company to share their music can still be accessed.

Reports surfaced last week that the Recording Industry Association of America was ready to move in on the website, but few anticipated such an immediate and drastic change. And while blocking files is not something new to Audiogalaxy-- they have blocked certain files over the past few months at artists' and labels' request-- most music remained available until last night. Of course, all this blocking is not foolproof: as with Napster, copyrighted MP3s with slightly altered filenames can still be downloaded.

At this point, Audiogalaxy has not issued a statement explaining their decision, but the future of the company, and widespread MP3 trading in general, does seem uncertain. On the bright side, at least they haven't taken away our CD burners. Yet.

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci Bail on Superchunk Tour
Thought there was going to be ice cream

Just when we could all use the gentle, wistful strumming and pastoral croon of Welsh darlings Gorky's Zygotic Mynci (not to mention a few extra L's and Y's), the band has up and cancelled their month-long stint with Superchunk, which was scheduled for November. They've given no explanation whatsoever. (To forestall confusion, and just so you know, Superchunk is going ahead with all dates.) The band's website promises an early 2002 tour, however, so we have that much more time to digest the comfort music on the band's latest, How I Long to Feel That Summer in My Heart.

The prolific young Gorkys burst on the English indie scene in the mid-90s, releasing a set of acclaimed albums of psychedelic whimsy on the Welsh label, Ankst. After signing to Mercury in 1996, the band released a US compilation, Introducing Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, which compiled stalwart tracks from their Ankst catalog. Following their two-album major label dalliance, which ended in an unceremonious dumping mere days after the release of 1998's Gorky 5, the band resurfaced on Mantra, evolving their sound from ebullient, chaotic prog-pop to more serene acoustic folk. Their new record was released earlier this month.

Mr. Scruff Works Hard for the Money
Donna Summer confined to your head for the rest of the day

Ninja Tune artist Mr. Scruff (aka Andy Carthy) will be arriving in the US this November for a powerhouse tour of five dates! That's right, five whole dates! The endurance that this crafter of beats-- a guy who draws his own album covers and designed his own website-- will have to put forth for this endeavor is unthinkable. Perhaps the suffering and financial hardship he's felt from his single "Get a Move On" being prominently featured in an ad campaign for Volvo has provided him with the stamina necessary for such an undertaking. You can cheer him on and put dollars in his thong at the following venues:

11-15 Los Angeles, CA - Sugar
11-16 San Francisco, CA - 111 Minna
11-17 Portland. OR - B Complex
11-19 Chicago, IL - Danny's
11-21 New York, NY - Knitting Factory
11-24 Washington, DC - DC Armory (w/DJ Food)

Kings of Convenience to Release Remix Album
Conveniently, they had guests do the mixing

Gentlecore mavens Kings of Convenience refuse to go quietly from the indie rock spotlight. Determined to turn pensive self-reflection into makeout music, the acoustic Bergen, Norway-based duo has announced they will release an album of remixes and guest performances of songs from their Quiet is the New Loud LP, on October 30th on Source/Astralwerks. Titled Versus, the record promises a subtly different take on the hushed, bossanova flavored acoustic folk-pop that characterized their preceding full-length, but the guess here is that it will still be hushed. Among the guests are Four Tet, fiddling with "The Weight of My Words," Andy Votel, tweaking "Winning the Battle, Losing the War," and Ladytron, reimagining "Little Kids." Also included are a couple of honest to goodness covers of KOC tunes, from Bergen's Evil Tordivel, and XL unsuccesses Alfie.

But don't look for Kings of Convenience at a venue near you. The duo have cancelled their US tour "due to the unstable situation in the world" and citing concerns about flying within the US. That fact that Anthrax, in a rare press conference Monday, said it had "more important targets in mind" has not altered the duo's decision.
