I Am The World Trade Center Recording "Louder And Darker" New Album
Take that, I Am The Pentagon and I Am The Oklahoma City Federal Building!

I Am the World Trade Center, who briefly curtailed their name in the wake of the September 11th attacks, have now reverted to their full and original self-description and they're hard at work on their third album, provisionally titled Going Underground, with an equally provisional March 2004 release. The new album, we are told by the fine people at Kindercore, will showcase a slightly more mature IATWTC sound, characterized by slightly less bubblegum and somewhat more seriousness.

IATWTC's Dan Geller tells us that the album will be "louder and darker" than previous outings, and his partner in synth-pop Amy Dykes says that the new album is lyrically "political and emotional, and much more personal than our previous releases," fine though those previous outings undoubtedly were. Dan is also quoted on the Kindercore website as saying that, "The next record is going to be our danciest and most sincere record so far. The beats have taken a big leap forward and the lyrics are truly from the heart. So far every track is an upfront dancefloor rocker, but there is also a hidden layer of darkness behind the seemingly upbeat songs," so you can infer from these statement that IATWTC are going to be bringing it strong on two fronts for this new release.

There's no full tracklisting as of yet, since this is still a work in progress, but we know at least that the album is not only named after but will also include a cover of The Jam's "Going Underground." The band is currently trying to whittle down an initial batch of thirty songs to around twelve for the final mix, which will most certainly include "Rockit," "Silent Filmstars," "No Expectations," and "The Great Escape."

Jah bless Ted Leo. In a musical age when attitude and style often prevail over substance and talent, when political dissent is often more of a fashion accessory than an earnest and informed moral statement, Leo is the torch-bearer of real-deal political rock. His last full-length LP, Hearts of Oak, found him avoiding pissed-off generalization and inveighing against specific and timely modern foibles, from the demise of authentic ska in a manufactured age on "Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone?" to the prevalence of and impetus for anti-American sentiment abroad on "Ballad of the Sin Eater."

Ace Fu Records, in conjunction with their new distributor, Mordam Records, have reissued Leo's 1999 solo EP, Treble in Trouble, so this semi-rare portion of his back catalog will again be available. Treble in Trouble was the follow-up to Leo's first post-Chisel release, Rx/Pharmacists, and eschewed that album's forays into tape loops and dubby production in favor of more straightforward mod-pop fare. Treble includes rollicking, Jam-influenced political songs like the anti-police brutality opener, "Abner Louima v. Gov. Pete Wilson" and an influence-revealing cover of Thin Lizzy's "Little Girl in Bloom."

The EP features backing help from Brendan Canty (Make*Up, Nation of Ulysses), Amy Farina (The Warmers), and the Secret Stars. Leo has also recently released the mini LP Tell Balgury, Balgury is Dead, which features solo renditions of a couple Hearts of Oak tracks alongside unreleased, demo-ish material. Prince Goes Door To Door For Jehovah's Witnesses
Let U who R without sin cast the first stone

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the little pale man with the symbol name who I think goes by Prince again has taken to door-to-door evangelism. A Jehovah's Witness since at least 2001, when he declared his new faith to the world in a magazine interview, the silly little musical genius apparently yapped his way into a Jewish household on October 5th during the Falcons-Vikings game. Having never actually been to the Twin Cities, I imagine people in Minneapolis probably spend their autumn Sundays either (a) debating how to say "I love you" to Paul Westerberg's answering machine or (b) peering across bratwursts at the Vikings game. The woman, who refused to give the newspaper a name beyond "Rochelle," seems to have been of the latter persuasion.

I'll let Rochelle tell it: "This is Sunday about 2 o'clock. And it's the night of Yom Kippur. My first thought is 'Cool, cool, cool. He wants to use my house for a set. I'm glad! Demolish the whole thing! Start over!' Then they start in on this Jehovah's Witnesses stuff."

Rochelle told the reporter that she remembered thinking about the Vikings having possession of the football, but remained polite. Prince and his companion, who identified himself as Larry Graham (formerly of Sly and the Family Stone and his own Graham Central Station), stuck around the house blabbering for what Rochelle approximated to be 25 minutes, then cut his losses and left a pamphlet. The pair then reportedly got into a large black truck and drove away from the house.

Bizarrely, His Purpleness did not appear to be interested in any other homes in Rochelle's Eden Prairie neighborhood. "They go door-to-door," Prince's intended candidate for salvation told the paper. "Walking. He wasn't walking. He was driving."

Aspera on Tour, Scattering Tracks to the Four Winds

Aspera, nee Aspera Ad Astra (like Kilborn taking his Five Questions with him when he left The Daily Show, Aspera's former singer Michael Robinson absconded with the Ad Astra suffix when he left the band), must be too busy this autumn to even give a shit about the questions that plague the rest of us. Was that kid at fault for knocking the ball back into play and screwing over The Cubs? Is Howard Dean's head real, or was his jaw designed by Disney animatronics experts? Hell, man, Aspera doesn't know. According to their newsletter, those psychedelic shoegazers, often compared to The Flaming Lips, Spiritualized, Echo and the Bunnymen and (regarding their deviant newest album Oh Fantastic) Tears For Fears, they're getting all touralicious and spraying new tracks everywhere like a stepped-on skunk.

First off, they have their contribution to Burnt Toast Vinyl's one-sided twelve-inch series ready to sell on their fall tour. Entitled the Back When Love EP (tellingly echoing Echo and the Bunnymen's Back Of Love-- coincidence? Well, yes, probably), it was produced by King Honey and Julian S. Process (the same team behind the boards for Oh Fantastica). It features three new tracks, and one that was previously released on the Japanese version of their Big Wheel Recreation album Sugar and Feathered.

Also currently available are the second and third volumes of Secret Eye Records's For the Dead in Space series, a compilation of bands covering psychedelic hero Tom Rapp (Pearls Before Swine) songs. Aspera contributes a cover of "These Things Too," alongside Rapp interpretations by Bardo Pond, Thurston Moore with Mike Watt, and Fursaxa. Which makes sense. If you've heard all the 808 drum patterns on Oh Fantastic, it's totally obvious that Aspera secretly want to be Rapp. -Ers! Ba-dum-ching.

To top it all off, Aspera is planning to do some live radio sessions at WFMU (NYC/Jersey City) and WIUS (University of Indiana at Bloomington) in early November. Not exactly Peel sessions, but nothing to sneeze at either, unless your allergies are acting up, in which case you just can't help it. Both performances will be posted on their website for your aural pleasure. Aspera is also recording material for "something special" that will be out on GSL in early 2004. More on that as details solidify. But oh, oh! I almost forgot the tour dates:

Stereolab's Margerine Eclipse Due In January
Synth-pop heroes ink controversial endorsement deal with Parkay

Stereolab have released the tracklist for their upcoming album, Margerine Eclipse. This will be Stereolab's first full-length album since the accidental death of guitarist Mary Hansen last year. It is set for a release date of January 27th, 2004 in these United States via Elektra (plus a double vinyl release on Duophonic UHF Disks). The news comes right on the heels of the release of Instant 0 in the Universe EP, Stereolab's most recent offering (which met the critical scorn of our resident Stereolab buff, Dominique Leone). My Morning Jacket have nearly finished rolling through America's amber waves of grain, bringing the rock and the roll to the sweatshirted, beard-flaunting, horn-rimmed glasses wearing, possibly unwashed masses of this great country. Black Heart Procession, Rivulets Sign On For Will Oldham Tribute Album
Damien Jurado's "New Partner" rejected for being indistinguishable from the original

Early 2004 is shaping up into a shitstorm of Oldham revisionism. In early September, Pitchfork reported that the Palace impresario (see also Palace, Palace Music, Palace Songs, Palace Brothers, Palace "Bonnie Prince Palace" Billy and Caesar's Palace) is in the process of re-recording extant songs for a Greatest Hits record to be released by Drag City early next year. The songs were chosen according to fan votes on the Palace Records website, and will be re-contextualized with the help of a bevy of Nashville session players. New Pitchfork staffer Encyclopedia Brown is hot on the trail of an official tracklist and release date, but so far has only turned up the missing rosin bag from the local baseball diamond and Becky's beeper number. We'll keep you posted.

In the meantime, Richmond, IN indie Tract Records has announced that they are soliciting submissions for a tribute to Oldham, also slated for release early next year. The tribute is to be titled I Am A Cold Rock. I Am Dull Grass. A Tribute to the Music of Will Oldham. While some of your favorites have already been claimed, don't be dissuaded: Tract maintains that it's very early in the selection process and the final selections will not be made until the December 31st deadline has passed. In other words, if your cover of "Riding" is better than what The Strugglers have come up with, Tract won't hesitate to kick them to the curb just because they were first. Should add a nice, competitive edge to the proceedings.

You're also welcome to submit more than one song: The only song Tract has actually received thus far is Aurora Town Council's version of "You Have Cum in Your Hair...," but others have staked out their territory: The Strugglers with "Riding," Rivulets with "You Will Miss Me When I Burn," Broken Family Band with "I Send My Love to You," The Channel with "Black," and Black Heart Procession (who seem perfect for the job; I wouldn't mind hearing an album of nothing but BHP covering Oldham) with a yet-to-be-specified contribution. If Jeff Mangum is reading this in his underground bunker, I beseech him to get in on the action and bestow joy upon us all.

Teenbeat's Mark Robinson Releasing Two Different Versions Of Latest Album

When last we left him in 2001, Mark Robinson (Unrest, Air Miami) was touring Canada's green highways, and although with many artists two years might not seem that long, anyone acquainted with Robinson's usual release schedule might be a little surprised at the dearth of new product. Well, worry no more, cause he's on a mission to tie up your record buying budget for the foreseeable future. If, well, you're really poor. Hyperbole, people-- get on board!

First up is a new proper solo album to follow-up 2000's Tiger Banana, and 2001's Canada's Green Highways (and yes, sort of 1996's Olympic Death Squad, but this could get confusing pretty quick, so settle down-- we know the man's catalog). So that makes Origami and Urbanism, due November 10th on Teenbeat, Robinson's third (or fourth) solo LP since the demise of Air Miami. Pitchfork spoke to Robinson via the magic of e-mail, and he dished a bit on the sound of the new record: "Origami and Urbanism is close in sound to the two previous albums, but implements a big organ with a Leslie speaker." The album was produced by K Records founder/Halo Bender/deer avoider Calvin Johnson, and features onetime K Records staple Lois Maffeo on guest vocals (where ya been?). The tracklist, mon ami:

So, what's better than two Mark Robinson solo albums? Why, three Mark Robinson solo albums. That's right, he's already writing songs for the next outing, to be produced by Trevor Holland (who also helmed Canada's Green Highways). Before that, though, Robinson will be putting out a seven-inch single on Tomlab Records, and releasing the long-delayed second release in his experimental series of EP's. Proposal features guest spots by Juliet Swango (Rondelles), Jeff Gramm (Aden), and Melissa Farris (Tuscadero). No official release date for that one, but we'll keep you posted.

Finally, Robinson's other project, Flin Flon, is still alive and kicking, and more specifically, writing songs for their next album, which Robinson says they hope to have out next year. Isn't that enough?

The Descendents To Return With New Album, EP In 2004

During my novice years as a music lover, I knew the Descendents by their recognizable album covers: "Oh yeah, they've got that cartoon guy with the glasses on all their CDs, right?" Well, sorta: my first real introduction was in my sophomore year of high school. I purchased Milo Goes To College and listened to it on my twelve-dollar Walkman until the cassette melted in my piano teacher's car. After that I kinda forgot about them.

And with a seven year studio drought since Everthing Sucks, unless you're a hard-core Descendents junkie you probably haven't thought about them much. But come January 2004, the legendary punk rockers will release a new EP, with an album following closely behind in March. Who's putting on this puppet show? Why, none other than Fat Wreck Chords! Words can't describe my disgust with these guys, so I'll skip all the NOFX put-downs and Lagwagon jokes and just simply state that I'm disappointed (however, I do approve of Fat's zaftig Les Toil mascot).

Twenty newly recorded songs will be split between the album and EP, though no official titles or tracklist have emerged. One of these is a new recording of the song "Lucky," which was a b-side to their single "I'm The One" back in 1996.

Finally, if you were all excited about the rumored All/Descendents combined instrumental endeavor, just relax-- that project's been pushed aside to give the new releases some breathing room.

The Autumn Defense Draw Circles, Play Some Shows
Completely blown off by All Girl Summer Fun Band

Circles, the new album from the adult contemporaryÉ er, best make that "folk-pop collaboration" between Wilco's John Stirratt and Pat Sansone (Swan Dive, Josh Rouse, etc.) known as The Autumn Defense, is out this week on Arena Rock Recording. The album features such "season"-ed musicians as Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Chicago singer-songwriter Andrew Bird, Swan Dive's Brad Jones, and drummer Ryan Rapsys-- but "leaves" the majority of the record in the hands of Stirratt and Sansone. Thank you, I'll be here in the lounge all week, drinks are half-price if you click on the Absolutely Kosher ad!

Recording on the project began way back in the winter of 2002, but the duo's commitments to their respective full-time gigs kept them from completing the disc in a timely manner. As a result, the recording became a shelter from the rigors of Stirratt's and Sansone's busy schedules. Initial tracks were laid down at a friend's studio in Nashville, and then the two bounced back and forth between their homes in Chicago and New York numerous times to "rake" together the remainder of the material before finally finishing the disc. Indie Tour Van Crash Of The Week: Ester Drang

We are, oh my brothers (and sisters), in the wake of a right bolshy strain of auto accidents involving musicians. Just in the past year, mishaps with motor vehicles have taken a quite serious toll, especially from Stereolab, Alien Ant Farm, and The Exploding Hearts. Others have fared better: witness the recent backhoe incident at the Butch Vig studio, the Kingsbury Manx crash, and K Records' Dub Narcotic posse thrown from their tour van.

And now, we bring you more of the ultraviolence: recent Jade Tree recruits Ester Drang were involved in a serious crash in St. Louis, MO, when a car struck the rear of their van and trailer. Though the band members were uninjured, the collision totaled all the band's equipment and has caused them to cancel a portion of their U.S. tour. They have hopes of rejoining the tour with The American Analog Set set by October 29th at the mesto Abbey Pub in Chicago to promote their latest release, Infinite Keys. Those dates:
