Aimee Mann to Release Concept Album

According to her official website, Aimee Mann (whom you might remember from the lovable 80s band 'Til Tuesday, or from the Magnolia soundtrack) is currently gearing up for the release of her fifth solo effort, entitled The Forgotten Arm. Due out on May 3, and produced by fellow singer-songwriter Joe Henry, The Forgotten Arm chronicles the story of a boxer and his girlfriend-- Mann has apparently taken up boxing herself recently-- as they fall in love during a cross-country road trip. Which is to say: Yes, it's a concept album.

An official tracklist has yet to surface for what Mann's people are calling the, ahem, "sonic novella", but Rolling Stone already has the beat on a few standout tracks, including the opener "Dear John", the piano-driven "I Can't Get My Head Around It", and a crippling ballad entitled "That's How I Knew This Story Would Break My Heart". In addition, the curious can take a listen to "Going Through the Motions", "She Really Wants You", and the aforementioned "I Can't Get..." at Mann's website.

By the End of Tonight Tour It Up!

Just in case you haven't yet stumbled over the unkempt gents in By the End of Tonight (and shame on you for that, the Fork ran a review last week), we thought we'd offer up a mathmatical representation of their sound along with this bit of news: 0.3 self-aware prog + 0.4 unabashed emo + 0.05 metal + 0.25 sitting-indian-style post-rock x 1 frothy wake of the two-man noise unit revolution. If that sloppy equation sounds the least bit exciting, keep on reading, 'cause the boys of By the End of Tonight are actually in the middle of a tour, in support of their latest Temporary Residence offering, Tribute to Tigers. Mr. Lif to Release Album as the Perceptionists

Remember when the Wu-Tang Clan promising to "form like Voltron" was new and cool? These days, fuck gun violence-- if Hillary Rodham Clinton were really worried about the media's effects on kids, she'd be researching how to keep hip-hop fans from turning into giant robots or annihilating enemies with space lasers. Mr. Lif has long been at the forefront of the sci-fi carnage scene, but as for the team-up action, he's sometimes looked like the lone wolf of Def Jux's roster.

But now, after years of hint-dropping, he and longtime friend Akrobatik are collaborating-- sorry, supertransforming-- to make an album as the Perceptionists. The result, Black Dialogue, emerges from its undersea cave on March 22, followed by a massive U.S.-wide tour. Dialogue tracklist:

01 Let's Move
02 People 4 Prez
03 Blo
04 Memorial Day
05 Love Letters
06 Black Dialogue
07 Frame Rupture
08 What Have We Got to Lose?!?
09 Party Hard [ft. Guru & Camutao]
10 Career Finders [ft. Humpty Hump aka Shock G]
11 5 O'Clock [ft. Phonte of Little Brother]
12 Breathe in the Sun

We'll skip the Godzilla jokes (sort of), but the ensuing tour really is long, especially with Lif having just complained on his webpage about a grueling European tour: "Shit was all good when we were in Amsterdam chillin' n shit. Then all fuckin' hell broke loose. London, Brussels, Paris, Oslo, and Stockholm all in a row. I don't know up from down." That's right, blaze all the weed you want in Amsterdam; it's that last stop at the Nobel Museum that'll knock you out. Le tour:

03-19 Austin, TX - Emo's
03-23 Boston MA - Paradise (with Vast Aire, C Rayz Walz, and EDO.G.)
03-24 New York, NY - Bowery Ballroom (with Edan, C Rayz Walz, and EDO.G.)

The La's Hop on the Reunion Bandwagon

With all of these earth-shaking reunions under way-- Slint, the Pixies, Roxy Music-- this one is virtually the most unlikely: The La's are reforming. For those of you who may have skipped over these guys during your Britpop mythology lesson, allow us to fill in the blanks. The La's were hot in 1990, known best for having produced the hit "There She Goes", a lovely tune that worked the UK charts and subsequently wound up on every twentysomething romantic comedy soundtrack for the next five years. However, tension and the mental health of leader Lee Mavers plagued the band while recording of the follow-up to their self-titled debut, resulting in an unfortunate and premature breakup.

But it's been a while, and things are different now, right? According to NME, co-founders Mavers and John Power (Cast) have been on the up-and-up, spotted out and about together and writing new songs. So far, large-scale tour plans are only rumored, though they have one confirmed show at the Summer Sonic festival in Japan this August.

Boredoms Sign to Vice, Plan North American Tour

Defying the age-old tradition which says that freaky people who mellow over time have to put on suits and go to work for The Man, Japan's Boredoms have followed their own path, from anally-obsessed noise monsters to tribal-drumming hippies. They've also been quiet for the past few years, and their new effort follows in the footsteps of Vision Creation Newsun.

But to sun-worshipping tribal drummers, a period of quiet is only a prelude to making some more noise. Hence, the newest Boredoms album, titled Seadrum/House Of Sun. It surfaced last year in Japan, but we won't have easy access to it until May 10, when Vice Recordings is scheduled to release it in North America. Here's a tracklist, which is going to seem kind of pointless in retrospect:

01 Seadrum
02 House Of Sun

The two 20-minute pieces are the result of editing down a bunch of Boredoms sessions from the past few years, some old enough that they include former guitarist Yamamoto. (We should point out that, at least at one point in the past, the Boredoms preferred not to have anyone leave the band as such; certain members would simply "become invisible.")

Live Boredoms shows these days carry on the rhythmic vibe with three drummers (Yoshimi, ATR, and Yojiro) backing up eternal frontman Eye Yamataka. The band is actually supporting the U.S. release of Seadrum/House Of Sun with a few previously announced North American performances, but so far the schedule only includes five dates-- four of the U.S.'s biggest cities, and a festival in Quebec. Victoriaville, here we come! Dates:

05-17 Los Angeles, CA - Knitting Factory
05-19 San Francisco, CA - The Independent
05-21 Chicago, IL - Logan Square Auditorium
05-23 Victoriaville, Quebec - Festival Actuelle
05-25 New York City, NY - Bowery Ballroom

Radiohead Begin Work on Their Seventh LP

After two years away from the studio, Radiohead have begun working on new music again, planting the seeds of what will likely become the follow-up to 2003's Hail to the Thief. A cryptic message from frontman Thom Yorke, posted earlier this month to the band's official webboard, suggested that this may be the case, however vaguely, reading, "hey weve started work. (speaking of cookies) no really." Now there's confirmation from guitarist Jonny Greenwood to back up the gibberish.

"Everything starts with songs, and with Thom, and with the excitement you can get in the band when you hear new music, and you know you've got the chance to watch it mutate and change," Greenwood told NME. "There's nothing like that, nothing as exciting. We're rehearsing at the moment, and again it's fun. We all want to push forward, and when you have five people who are all like that, you couldn't ask for a better thing."

In related news, Yorke and Greenwood will be appearing live in London next Monday and Tuesday at the London Royal Festival Hall, as part of The London Sinfonietta, to premiere new material they've apparently written specifically for this event. Fans should prepare to witness "two evenings of experimentation, collaboration and cross-genre juxtaposition," according to the performances' spokespersons. A selection of classical works and Arabic traditionals will also be played.

Travis Morrison Plays the East Coast

Ok, there's no easy way to get around the subject, so let's just hang all the dirty laundry out to dry, shall we? Late last year, Travis Morrison released his first solo album. An album that some might call disappointing. So disappointing, in fact, that Pitchfork gave Travistan a rating of 0.0. Zero-point-zero. The numerical distinction given to something devoid of value. A little harsh? Certainly, but even with the lowest score possible on his permanent record, he's still averaging just under a 7.0, meaning that he's got some great albums under his belt, as well.

Which brings us to the ass-kissing counterpoint: It wouldn't be an overstatement to say that Travis Morrison is kind of a genius, having fronted the Dismemberment Plan, one of the most spectacular and original bands of the past decade. And he's the ultimate in showmanship, inspiring manic, involuntary ass-shaking while waxing poetic on the pitfalls of urban twentysomething existentialism. So, naturally it's exciting to hear that he's got some shows lined up in 2005. For now, he's only doing East Coast spots, but according to his website, a wider tour is on the way. He's also writing some new songs, two of which he's described as, "R. Kelly crossed with the Thermals," and, "The Hold Steady meets Devo." In other words, it's probably going to sound a lot like Uncle T.

Finally, the bad business is behind us. Now we can, as Morrison puts it in Travistan's criminally overlooked secret song, "move on to better times." Now let's go see some shows, yeah:

03-25 Fredricksburg, VA - The Loft (w/ Pash & Bellafea)
03-26 Norfolk, VA - Relative Theory Records (w/ Morning Theft)
04-01 Harrisonburg, VA - MACRoCk 2005

Doves and Mercury Rev Hit the Road Together

Not to turn this into an episode of "Entertainment Tonight" or anything, but how hot are Doves right now? Frankly, any band cool enough to forego using the customary three-letter article in front of its name is definitely worth at least some of your time. The brooding Manchester trio are fresh off the release of their latest work, Some Cities, which debuted at No. 1 on the UK album charts and prompted the British press into their usual boner-popping hysteria.

Doves seemingly have their Stateside buzz back as well-- they're just putting wraps on a limited U.S. trip (which included stops at the SXSW Festival in Austin and Los Angeles) and now they'll test us Yanks again with a three-week long tour along with New York's own Mercury Rev. Things will kick off following the bands' appearances at the Coachella Festival and will trek eastward through the month of May.

In related Doves news, while Some Cities lead single "Black and White Town" is still cooling on the windowsill, frontman Jimi Goodwin told Billboard.com that "Snowden" will be the next single chosen from the album. No release date has been set yet, but Goodwin said it could feature "one new song" and "a couple of remixes by people quite close to us" in the way of B-sides. Dates:

05-01 San Francisco, CA - Fillmore
05-03 Seattle, WA - Showbox
05-04 Portland, OR - Aladdin Theater
05-06 Vancouver, British Columbia - Commodore Ballroom

So before you get all uppity about it, let us just say: We know we just reported Spoon tour dates last Friday.
