Rilo Kiley to Tour North America

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww. Okay, now I will make no further mention of Rilo Kiley's cuteness factor. You don't need me telling you that Jenny Lewis is adorable. This is Pitchfork, not Gawker.

Having just completed a tour of Europe supporting ex-labelmates Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley (a band, not a person-- like, say, Jethro Tull) are going to journey across North America in further support of 2004's More Adventurous. In addition to spots at Coachella (not surprising) and Bonnaroo (surprising), they have a date with Coldplay in Vegas (cute to the extreme!).

If you'll compare this tour schedule with that of Bright Eyes, it seems like they're right on each other's heels. After five Bright Eyes shows at Webster Hall in New York, Rilo Kiley will play there for two nights. That's a week full of Saddle Creek-related action in NYC. Could this mean a blossoming romance between Conor and Jenny?! Maybe this is Gawker after all...no, no it's not. Please don't quote us on that-- it was a joke.

Gorillaz Single to Hit Stores in May

Monkey cock. There, we said it. The impending arrival of a new Gorillaz album has been presaged by a new Flash game at Gorillaz.com, in which you can wander through Kong Studios, finding information about the band and their music, and seeing a lot of cartoon animal genitalia. We aren't sure of the actual reason for all this, although a visit to Gorillaz message boards assured us that the game contained many more things we hadn't yet discovered, including Nazi corpses, at which point we breathed a collective sigh of relief that when we signed up for the website, we hadn't used our real names or addresses.

That new album we were speaking of is Demon Days, due out May 24, as previously reported in Pitchfork, and its first single now has a release date as well: "Feel Good Inc." hits the British singles market on May 9. The single includes a guest appearance by De La Soul, while its B-sides in the various single formats (CD, 7", and DVD) will include "Spitting out the Demons", "68 State", and "Bill Murray". The video, like those from the first album, will be directed by Jamie Hewlett and Pete Candeland.

Looking to the future, there are rumblings that a third Gorillaz album may appear without another four-year gap, at least if cartoon monkeys can be trusted. (And at this point, why not?) The band's guitarist, Noodle, told their official fansite, "I am already busy demo-ing for the third Gorillaz album. Then this trilogy will have its conclusion."

Elvis Costello Reissue Coming Soon

The first half of every great artist's career is spent becoming immortal and the last half is spent reaffirming that immortality. At least that's the case with the prolific and well-loved musician Elvis Costello, who recently emerged from a large pile of anthologies and compilations to announce the reissuing of his 1986 album, King of America. The LP marks the first effort in which Costello left his longtime supporting band, the Attractions (they appear here on only one track). Costello assures his listeners, however, that this is not a marketing tool or a chance to rack in more and more dough. According to a Billboard report, during a brief question/answer session at this year's annual SXSW festival Costello remarked, "[The reissues are] for those who missed it the first time around, not for those obsessed with having everything."

Due April 26 from Rhino, the set will include a 21-song second disc of rarities such as a spattering of Costello solo demos, live recordings, and work with the Coward Brothers.

Interestingly, a reissue of the same album in 1995 through Rykodisc proves to have some of the same material. Most of the the live material featured on Rhino's version once appeared on the previous Ryko effort. The solo demo recordings found on Rhino's version act as the major difference between the two reissues.

Public Enemy to Release Live DVD

In 1987, Public Enemy bum-rushed Europe louder than a bomb, bringing the most incendiary music the United States had produced in a decade (at least) across the Atlantic. The tour saw the then-rookie rebels teaming up with legends Eric B. and Rakim and LL Cool J for a full-scale Euro invasion. (Remember, before J ruined his cred with Toys and "In the House" and Flav was stumbling around on "The Surreal Life", these guys were pretty threatening.) On April 19, the venerable rap group will release It Takes a Nation: The First London Invasion Tour 1987, a DVD which will include live concert footage of the band's three shows at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, shot then by film students but edited by Swirl Films in North Carolina.

The DVD will feature behind-the-scenes footage, photos, and commentary from Chuck D as bonuses, as well as a bonus CD with rare remixes and the concert that was excerpted for 1988's It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, in its entirety.

Strokes Near Completion of Third Album

Like that popular girl in class who keeps stringing you along, the Strokes have been annoyingly tight-lipped about their long-in-the-works third album-- the follow-up to 2003's sophomore effort Room On Fire. After announcing in 2004 that they were shacked up in a New York studio with producer/engineer David Kahne, and a January 2005 e-mail from manager Ryan Gentles confirming the completion of at least five new tracks, precious little has surfaced about the release.

And while, no, we aren't writing to you today with news of an album title, release date, or tracklist, what we can report-- according to a one sentence update on the band's official website-- is that The Strokes "are almost done recording their third album." Oh, it smells like news to us, baby!

However, the New York garage quintet's latest fan club newsletter ups the ante a little bit (and allows us to expand this story to more than one paragraph). Says singer Julian Casablancas when asked about his expectations for the new disc, "It will be better than the last one. We'd like for it to sound a little more professional but still sound like us." So maybe no more identical vocal effect on every song? When pressed about a release date, drummer Fab Moretti joked, "We're overdubbing the sitars and strings in March, so what's that...two months?" Call the Maharishi!

Also, as previously reported, Ryan Gentles has promised significantly longer touring duties for the upcoming release than the schedule the Strokes followed in support of Room On Fire. A 2005 start date for the proposed trek was also alluded to by Gentles: "We'll be seeing you all later this year...and we'll be sure to get to a lot of countries/cities/places that we haven't been to before or that we haven't been to since Is This It touring." But, again, no actual details for you...slackers.

However, one thing that we can confirm is that celebrated guitar manufacturer Epiphone, in cooperation with Strokes guitarist Nick Valensi, has recently issued a mass-produced retail version of Valensi's long-prized custom 1960s Epiphone Riviera guitar. The Epiphone Elitist Nick Valensi Riviera P-94 is available now through your local Epiphone dealer, but vintage Coke shirt and ragged Chuck Taylors are sadly not offered as a package deal.

Lollapalooza Returns!

Don't laugh: Lollapalooza is back. We all know what happened last year when nobody wanted to go to Lollapalooza-- they cancelled it. But, because the single-weekend megafests have been so successful the past few years, they're going to try and apply that tactic to Lollapalooza 2005, which will take place in Chicago's Grant Park on July 23 and 24. Considering the downtown location, it is highly unlikely that you'll be able to camp out at this festival. Billboard reports that possible artists include Beck, the Killers, Kings of Leon, and Widespread Panic. This seems to take after Bonnaroo's half-jam, half-indie rock mentality.

Lollapalooza's website has been updated and simply says to come back on April 1, hopefully with more info and a more complete line-up. Given Lollapalooza's snafu last year, let's just hope a visit to the website on Friday doesn't say "April Fools!"

LCD Soundsystem and M.I.A. to Tour Together

I can't possibly give LCD Soundsystem and M.I.A. any more hype than they've already received. What's amazing, though, is that these two artists have caught fire with very few U.S. tour dates to their credit. But that's about to change-- and in grand fashion. M.I.A. will open for LCD Soundsystem in North America in May and June. Here's the schedule thus far:

In other DFA news, LCD Soundsystem and DFA head James Murphy did some spinning at the Winter Music Conference in Miami this past weekend. A post on the DFA website says, "For those of you [...] doing double takes, that WAS Puff Daddy, Timbaland, Marilyn Manson, and Kelly Osbourne. P. Diddy stood on top of the DJ booth and sang his new single 'Jack U' through a megaphone as Felix Da Housecat spun the instrumental. Truly weird. (the Kelly Osbourne part)." Crazy stuff. Also, in the slight break in touring between May and June, the DFA will be producing Gavin Russom & Delia's new album.

Odd Nosdam Album Out in May

Not everyone cheered at the cleaner new sound exhibited on Odd Nosdam's 2003 LP No More Wig for Ohio, but you might say the execution was responsible for any faults, and after all, this was Odd's first attempt outside of a Tascam cassette 8-track, right? If such were your thoughts, you'll get a clearer picture on May 24 when Anticon releases Odd Nosdam's latest album, entitled Burner. Press releases claim that the LP strikes "a rare harmony between his G4 and his trusty cassette 8-track, between precision and tape saturation...", so either he's sharpened his skills or Anticon really knows how to sell what the people want.

One change is clear: Odd Nosdam has abandoned relying entirely on his masterful cratedigging and sampling style, and has invited several vocalists and musicians on board this time out. Fellow Anticon members include Dosh, jel, Dax Pierson, and Josiah Wolf and Doug McDiarmid of WHY? (not to be confused with Odd's fellow cLOUDDEAD alum why?, who is himself a member of WHY?). And while those may be natural, vocalists like Mike Patton, Andrew Broder of Fog, and Jessica Bailiff leave more to the imagination, and even Mum's Orvar Smarason makes an appearance. Of course, not everything's changed: There are three untitled songs on the album, but this time they have numbers next to them! Tracklist:

01 Untitled One
02 Refreshing Beverage (w/ Dosh)
03 Smoke
04 Small Mr. Man Pants (w/ Andrew Broder and Orvar Smarason)
05 Untitled Two (w/ Dax Pierson)
06 11th Ave. Freakout Pt. 1
07 11th Ave. Freakout Pt. 2 (w/ Mike Patton, Josiah Wolf)
08 Cloudead (w/ Liz Hodson)
09 Untitled Three (w/ Jessica Bailiff)
10 Gun
11 Upsetter
12 Flying Saucer Attack (w/ Jessica Bailiff, Jesse Edwards)

Damien Jurado to Tour Behind New Album

We've come up with some pretty bad ideas at our weekly drunken Pitchfork bar gatherings, but this time around the news staff got to thinking: What if there was an Indie Rock Football League? And we're not talkin' teams of faceless street-dwellin' hipsters here-- what if there were some serious squads filled with actual musicians, all suitin' up and fighting over who gets to be the kicker? Think about it, no amount of sloppy Pixies riffs or VU worship'd save you, cause oblique poetry and nods to Krautrock don't score touchdowns. With that in mind, we all pretty much agreed that our money'd consistently be on Secretly Canadian. Seriously, have you ever seen Damien Jurado? The guy's built like Lawrence Taylor. He'd be unstoppable, blowing through a flimsy line of waify Mergesters and out of shape cigarette totin' Matadors.

Speaking of the Jurado (as we make an overdue departure from that misguided and tangential football introduction), he's got a new record coming out on April 5 titled On My Way to Absence, and he's planned a tour to accompany the album's streeting. According to Secretly Canadian, the record is an all new aural experience for Jurado and long time contributor Eric Fisher. Billed as a tribute to jealousy, Absence-- which features some nifty guest spots filled by Rosie Thomas and Eric Bachmann-- is said to be "stripped of any inclination of genre-adopting." Wow, we've never heard that one before. Tracklist:

01 White Center
02 Lottery
03 Big Decision
04 Lion Tamer
05 Fuel
06 Simple Hello
07 Sucker
08 I Am the Mountain
09 Night Out For the Downer
10 Northbound
11 Icicle
12 A Jealous Heart Is a Heavy Heart

And, hey, if you like indie rock linebackers or Jurado's live show-- in which we hear he's a pretty splendid jerk to hecklers-- ten days after Absence hits shelves, he's setting out on a string of dates in support of the record with rootsy throwbacksters Two Gallants-- who've apparently read and enjoyed a bit of Joyce-- and indie pop minimalists Sail On, Sailor! So catch 'em live at one of the following places:

04-15 St. Paul, MN - Turf Club
04-16 Madison, WI - Catacombs Coffee House
04-17 Chicago, IL - Schubas

Crowded House's Paul Hester Dies

According to numerous Australian press reports, former Split Enz and Crowded House drummer Paul Hester was found dead Saturday in a Melbourne park, victim of an apparent suicide by hanging at age 46. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that despite Hester's jocular, Ringo-esque persona, he fought a lifelong battle against depression, leaving Crowded House in 1994 in frustration over the band's career. Hester went on to host several shows on Australian TV. He leaves behind two daughters, aged 5 and 10, by photographer Mardi Somerfeld.

The Herald further reports that bandmates and friends Neil and Tim Finn did not cancel their Monday night performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London, as had been considered. Instead, they were joined there by Crowded House bassist Nick Seymour for a tribute to Hester.

White Stripes Set Release Date for Forthcoming LP

What's it been, like five weeks since we reported that creepily-pale blues exploders Jack and Meg White had just begun recording duties for their fifth studio album? Well, you can reset your egg timer, as according to an email from the band's label, V2 Records, the latest LP from the White Stripes has been given a release date of June 14.

The album, which was produced by singer/guitarist/thespian Jack White, doesn't seem to have an album title or tracklist yet, but their PR company notes that unlike the Stripes' previous release, 2003's Elephant, no guest artists appear on the disc. And considering Jack's recent crossover success with Loretta Lynn's Van Lear Rose, you know our good friend Kenny Rogers is somewhere sulking in his chicken bucket right now.

And what of potential tour dates in support of the album with no name? According to V2, "The band will tour South America and Eastern Europe first, no U.S. tour dates are confirmed." A handful of summer concerts have been committed to as of this writing, however, and include a trio of Mexican shows this May, followed by a set at the 2005 Music Midtown Festival in Atlanta on June 10. Also on the roster for the annual summer fest are Pixies, Lou Reed, Bloc Party, Coheed and Cambria, the Killers, Keane, Louis XIV, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Southern accents:

05-11 Monterrey, Mexico - Fundidora Amphitheatre de Coca Cola
05-13 Guadalajara, Mexico - Foro Alterno
05-14 Mexico City, Mexico - Palacio De Los Deportes
06-10 Atlanta, GA - Music Midtown Festival
