Mike Doughty to Release Album, Tour

Who knew that in 2005, Peter Gabriel would be a trailblazer for younger songwriters? We speak, of course, of Gabriel covering the Magnetic Fields' "The Book of Love" for the soundtrack to Shall We Dance. Not long after word of that cover got out, former Soul Coughing singer Mike Doughty recorded the same song in sessions for his upcoming new album, Haughty Melodic. We're willing to believe it's just a coincidence, though, if only so that we can dream of a world in which we don't hear about everything Peter Gabriel does six months in advance. Sorry, Peter. That's just how it is.

But even though Melodic comes out May 3, we'll have to wait longer to hear him singing Stephin Merritt. On his blog, Doughty explained: "We recorded covers of the Magnetic Fields' 'The Book of Love', and Kenny Rogers' 'The Gambler'. Both sounded great, and we had a notion to end the record with a cover tune, but we were struck by this one tune that previously we'd kind of written off, 'Your Misfortune'. [...] We realized it was really great and bumped the cover concept. Both 'Book' and 'Gambler' will find lives outside the record, though-- iTunes or European or Japanese bonus tracks or something." Are the Japanese into Kenny Rogers? We really can't keep up. Anyway, the tracklist:

01 Looking at the World from the Bottom of a Well
02 Unsingable Name
03 Madeline and Nine
04 Busting Up A Starbucks
05 White Lexus
06 American Car
07 Tremendous Brunettes
08 I Hear The Bells
09 Sunken-Eyed Girl
10 Grey Ghost
11 His Truth Is Marching On
12 Your Misfortune

Mike Doughty and his new keyboardist, Dan Chen, will tour for most of May, assuming Doughty's jury duty doesn't interfere. No joke. Those dates:

Kompakt Opens Online Mp3 Shop

Kompakt, for years operating as Cologne, Germany's most prominent techno record store, label, distributor, booking agency and recording studio, has launched a new feature -- an online digital warehouse featuring their entire catalog, as well as material from over 50 different record labels.

The site, http://www.kompakt-mp3.net, has seen over 5,000 Mp3 downloads in the two weeks since its launch and charges 1.29 EUR per track (about $1.65). While this may seem a wee pricey (considering you can buy "Hey Mama" off iTunes for a mere $0.99), Kompakt's draw is that much of its library is diffcult to find in North America shops, and many of the tracks are otherwise only issued on 12" vinyl. Oh, and also because they're just about the best record label in the world.

Wolfgang Voigt, Kompakt co-founder had this to say in a press release: "We want to reach people in regions of the world where vinyl is not available. To offer a legal Mp3 option against all the illegal platforms which currently exist. To protect our music."

Voigt added that the Mp3 shop also targets the growing generations of iPod-ers and digital DJs. "We had to face the facts-- there are two new generations of music listeners rising up. If we want to reach these people with our music, we needed to make them an offer."

The move is a natural outgrowth for Kompakt, which has had enormous success from its humble beginnings over eight years ago. Today, thanks to the growth of their online sales, they offer a large selection of electronic music. And Voigt seems to think there could be even more on the way: "Kompakt hopes to work together with as many techno labels as possible to become part of our specialized Mp3 shop so we can strengthen the scene instead of being made available to every second supermarket."

In other Kompakt news, the label has released and is preparing to release a number of 12" singles. These include:

The Field: Things Keep Falling Down
Michael Mayer: "Lovefood"
Mayer/Voigt b/w the Modernist: Speicher 28
Ulf Lohmann: "On Frozen Fields"
Triola: Im Remixraum
Kaito: "Color of Feels"

Brian Eno Prepares New Album

Along with the Fall, Brian Eno has been making all these young indie whippersnappers look pretty lazy lately. Each have been popping out an album a year recently, and now after last year's collaboration with Robert Fripp, the French website Metisse Music is reporting that Eno is working on a new release, tentatively titled Another Day on Earth.

Hannibal Records (a subsidary of Ryko) will release Another Day on June 13. Metisse describes the record as a "vocal album", though, knowing Eno, it probably won't be purely a capella; it does however conjure up memories of our favorite obtuse lyrics of the 70s.

Unfortunately, there's no tracklist to cite, but it appears he's been practicing his chops as of late. On April Fool's Day, Eno joined Algerian world-beat veteran Rachid Taha on stage in France, "playing and singing, until the end," and he contributed to Taha's latest effort, Who Are You?. Sure, expectations that come with a legend like Eno are too high, but dude's been on a roll the past few years, and we'll take a gamble on him over Louis XIV any day.

50 Cent, Eminem Head Anger Management Tour

Please tell your lovers and friends: This summer Ludacris and Lil' Jon will join Eminem, 50 Cent, and others on the third installment of the Anger Management tour, hitting a corporately-branded amphitheater sort of near you. The shows will feature most members of the Shady/Aftermath family, including Obie Trice, G-Unit, D-12 and the label's newest additions, Atlanta's Stat Quo. It will be the first time Eminem has toured since the release of Encore last fall, and it'll also be his first time on the road with 50 Cent. Ludacris will be taking 50's place for the first two tour dates while 50 Cent finishes filming his acting debut, which, according to IMDB.com, is called either 50 Cent: Bulletproof or, more cryptically, Untitled 50 Cent Project. We're pulling for the latter.

But maybe you're wondering if the on-again, off-again relationship between 50 Cent and the Game will keep the Game from the tour. We don't know for sure, but consider this: last Thursday the two teamed up to donate a total of $200,000 to the Compton Unified School District. The money, which will go toward re-starting music and art programs, was donated by 50 Cent's G-Unity Foundation (very cute), Interscope Records, Aftermath Entertainment, and The Game's very own Black Wall Street Organization. But honestly, what did Compton school children ever do for them? The dates:

At The Drive-In Retrospective Coming

Frances the Mute, we all knew, was just too terse a title to be true. Five years after their At The Drive-In swan song, Relationship Command, the Mars Volta's Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler along with Sparta's Jim Ward, Paul Hinojos, and Tony Hajjar will release a compilation entitled This Station Is Non-Operational on May 24. Fearless Records will issue this retrospective At the Drive-In product in the U.S., while NME.com has reported that V2 will release the comp overseas on June 6. According to Fearless Records' website, the former bandmates handpicked the selection, and included not only fan favorites but also BBC sessions, re-mixes and B-sides, and covers of both the Smiths and Pink Floyd. Two of the "greatest hits" are available for download off of Fearless' site.

But the fun doesn't stop there. The release will also include a DVD bonus disc full of music videos, nostalgic desktop wallpaper, and buddy icons. Twenty unreleased photographs will grace the booklet insert, but the real steal will be Operations Manual, ATDI's electronic press kit which was previously privy only to real journalists such as ourselves. Here's the tracklist:

Caribou Tour Kicks Off, Album Delayed, EP Issued

One-man act Dan Snaith, otherwise known as Caribou (and previously known as Manitoba), will begin a lengthy international tour this Saturday, April 16 in support of his upcoming album The Milk of Human Kindness. The tour will start in Paris, France, before winding across the UK, Canada, and finally ending up in the U.S. As previously reported on Pitchfork, Snaith has enlisted fellow Canadians and Pitchfork faves the Junior Boys and Russian Futurists to share the bill for the American tour dates, while Cincinnati-based beat box master Boom Bip will play several shows with Caribou in England.

The UK portion of the tour coincides with the release of Milk, which will be issued in Great Britain on Leaf on Monday, April 18. U.S. fans, however, will have to wait another couple of weeks to get their hands on the record-- according to Domino U.S., a shipping delay has pushed the LP's release back from April 19 to May 3.

At every stop on the tour, Caribou will offer a limited-edition, 36-minute tour EP. Titled Tour CD 2005, the tracklist is:

01 Mix
02 Bloody Murder
03 Medium Sized Working Dog (Steady Steady)
04 Cardiff
05 Raspberry
06 The Snow Capes
07 Sinuses

If you can't come out to any of Snaith's upcoming shows, he hints on his website that "perhaps a handful of copies will be available via internet mailorder."

The recently renamed Caribou, who was forced to give up the Manitoba moniker because Dictators frontman Handsome Dick Manitoba sued for trademark infringement, is still popular among critics for his innovative beats and off-kilter indie pop. Montreux Jazz Festival Lineup Announced

Apart from providing the setting for Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water", the Montreux Jazz Festival is also famous for its beautiful setting and spectacular performances. Now in its 39th year, the festival has lured some of the 20th century's greatest jazz musicians to play on the shores of Lake Geneva. Since the inaugural three-day festival in 1967, Montreux has attracted such giants as Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Nina Simone, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Bill Evans, and Ella Fitzgerald, to name but a few. But in recent times, the festival has sidestepped the jazz-exclusive hallmark and opened its doors to every possible music genre imaginable, to the regret of many purists. But this disappointment among aficionados is irrelevant of course; even jazz-heads secretly know that one cannot think of "jazz" without automatically thinking of the following words: "Velvet" and "Revolver". Well, maybe not.

Recently, it has been no surprise to see many larger festivals compromising and succumbing to the pressure of competing for consumer and sponsor money, and Montreux is no exception. But seriously, with 16 straight days of shows at three venues, few festivals, whether rooted in a jazz or rock or even a polka tradition, can boast the following lineup:

Kraftwerk, Bright Eyes, LCD Soundsystem, Antony & the Johnsons, Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, M83, Death in Vegas, Soulwax, Underworld, the Dears, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Jean Grae, Lauryn Hill, Audioslave, Velvet Revolver, the Hives, Trail of Dead, Kasabian, the Bravery, Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Marianne Faithfull, Steve Earle, Isaac Hayes, Brian Wilson, and many, many more.

Thankfully for many, some old Montreux traditions have been kept intact: one venue is featuring mostly jazz-related artists for many of its shows. Soul legends and blues greats (including B.B. King and Solomon Burke) are represented as always, and a couple of Montreux's cherished genres, like Brazilian sounds (The Life Aquatic star Seu Jorge) and salsa (Ray "Deeper Shade of Soul" Baretto) are featured prominently.

The festival will be held July 1 through July 16. Check the link below for ticket information and complete details.

Bloc Party Schedule More U.S. Shows

What would an It Band be without an enormous, ever-expanding schedule of tour dates? Not much, and Bloc Party knows this, and they've added a dozen more American dates to their seasons-spanning 2005 schedule. Meanwhile, according to the band's official website, they'll be at Music Zone in Manchester, England between 3 and 4:30 p.m. this Sunday, to sign copies of Silent Alarm (and presumably body parts). And speaking of their website, the band is looking to add to it very soon. An interactive fanzine is in the works, and will hopefully be up and running within a month. "This is intended to be an online fanzine about Bloc Party, you and your experiences," says the site. "The idea being that we can have a journal of reviews, pictures and videos produced and submitted by fans from all around the world." Our only question: How did we live without it for so long?

Deerhoof Release EP, Continue Tour

As Pitchfork reported last month, Deerhoof are on the open road, touring in support of a new EP, Green Cosmos. "So what?" you say. "If you already told me, why am I supposed to care? I mean, Deerhoof's constantly evolving hodgepodge of clangy abrasion mixed with the sweet wail of frontwoman Satomi rocks, but I already read this! why?!"

Whoa, calm down. The reason, thank you very much, that I even bring it up is because that fabled EP was late to arrove. Finally, we have a tracklist. And here it is, smartass:

The as-yet-untitled disc is slated for a fall release. Saunier says they might have even been able to record while on the road, "But last time Chris brought his computer on tour, an entire row of pixels went entirely blank."
