Edwyn Collins Recovering From Serious Infection

Health problems continue for former Orange Juice frontman Edwyn Collins. CNN reports that Collins underwent a successful life-saving operation in February after two brain hemorrhages, but has recently contracted a serious, antibiotic-resistant infection in the surgical scar.

According to the BBC, the so-called "superbug" MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) has evolved an extraordinary degree of resistance to antibiotics. MRSA is commonly found in hospitals, because the close proximity of so many varieties of staphylococcus and so many types of antibiotics helps to accelerate the mutation process that produces antiobiotic-resistant strains of staph. Although MRSA can be fatal, Collins' wife Grace Maxwell told the Daily Record newspaper that he has responded well to treatment and is "now doing absolutely fine." The MRSA infection, she said, "has been very difficult to get under control" but now doctors were "very happy" with the way Collins has recovered. Collins will soon be returning to the rehab program he was undergoing as a result of the brain operation itself, Maxwell said.

Neko Case Reveals Tour Plans

It's relatively easy to become lost in the name game when discussing the deep expanse of female alt-country types these days, but Neko Case has always shown the pluck and spunk to stand out and distance herself from most of the pack. Indeed, Case has been an assiduous soul since her days in Vancouver's art school/punk group Maow, broadening her fiery voice through relentless touring and countless collaborating, not to mention helping out in side projects like the Corn Sisters and the New Pornographers.

Neko Case is known for her charismatic live shows, where she tends to bypass any overused and ominous alt-country labels by being candid and kitschy. "How can I judge for myself," you ask? One way is to pick up last year's live album, The Tigers Have Spoken. Another way would be to catch her at one of the following shows:

05-31 Tucson, AZ - Club Congress
06-02 Aspen, CO - Belly Up, Aspen

Shins, Decemberists, Spoon Head Believer Comp

Despite our loyalty to the electronic medium, we would never skimp on the love for our brothers and sisters in the print magazine trade, especially smart-looking mags that grab quasi-religious monikers and snub photography in favor of drawings by Charles Burns. So, of course, we were already suckers for the McSweeney's-connected The Believer even before they announced a compilation CD with some of our favorite musicians, to be packaged with their June issue.

The bands involved were asked to pick a song by answering the question "What have you been listening to lately?" Yes, it's a covers album-- but instead of being treated to a Counting Crows rendition of "Horse With No Name", we get popular contemporary artists covering... popular contemporary artists. Among the goodies on the CD are the inescapable Devendra Banhart trying on Antony & the Johnson's white facepaint, the Decemberists borrowing Joanna Newsom's shoes, and the Shins reviving their acquaintance with the Postal Service. We also get the Constantines and Ida each appearing both as performers and as cover-ees; yea, and a Wolf shall cover a Frog, a Mountain Goat shall cover a Silver Jew, and the majority of the tracks shall be previously unreleased, amen. The tracklist:

01 The Decemberists: "Bridges & Balloons" by Joanna Newsom
02 Spoon: "Decora" by Yo La Tengo
03 The Constantines: "Why I Didn't Like August '93" by Elevator
04 CocoRosie: "Ohio" by Damien Jurado
05 The Mountain Goats: "Pet Politics" by Silver Jews
06 San Serac: "Late Blues" by Ida
07 The Shins: "We Will Become Silhouettes" by the Postal Service
08 Josephine Foster: "The Golden Window" by the Cherry Blossoms
09 Cynthia G. Mason: "Surprise, AZ" by Richard Buckner
10 Jim Guthrie: "Nighttime/Anytime (It's Alright)" by the Constantines
11 Espers: "Firefly Refrain" by Fursaxa
12 Two Gallants: "Anna's Sweater" by Blear
13 Vetiver: "Be Kind to Me" by Michael Hurley
14 Ida: "My Fair, My Dark" by David Schickele
15 Mount Eerie: "Waterfalls" by Thanksgiving
16 Devendra Banhart: "Fistful of Love" by Antony & the Johnsons
17 Wolf Parade: "Claxxon's Lament" by Frog Eyes

Interpol, Arcade Fire Lend Songs to "Six Feet Under" Disc

Television soundtracks are hot these days, perhaps even more popular than their motion picture counterparts. With some bands gaining many more fans due to exposure on shows like "The O.C." and "Gilmore Girls", not to mention strong sales for the discs spawned from the programs, it is not surprising to find the networks cashing in on the popularity of both the music and the shows.

On June 21, Astralwerks will release the second volume of music compiled from HBO's popular "Six Feet Under" series. The show, which begins its fifth and final season on June 6, is probably not as well known for its music as "The O.C.", but its soundtrack certainly is on par with, and perhaps even surpasses, "The O.C." as far as talent is concerned.

The first "Six Feet Under" soundtrack included songs by PJ Harvey, the Beta Band, Zero 7, and the Dandy Warhols. The new album features previously released material from Radiohead, Coldplay, Phoenix, and Death Cab for Cutie, as well as some new material. iPoders the Caesars will contribute a cover of Blue Oyster Cult's "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" (insert tired cow bell joke here).

But, the best news about this soundtrack is that it will feature two exclusive new tracks from Interpol and the Arcade Fire. Here's the tracklist:

>>Six Feet Under: Everything Ends, Music from the HBO Original Series - Vol. 2
01 Nina Simone - "Feelin' Good"
02 Jem - "Amazing Life"
03 Phoenix - "Everything Is Everything"
04 Coldplay - "A Rush of Blood to the Head"
05 Sia - "Breathe Me"
06 Radiohead - "Lucky"
07 Irma Thomas - "Time is on My Side"
08 Bebel Gilberto - "Aganjœ (The Latin Project Remix Edit)"
09 Interpol - "Direction"
10 The Caesars - "(Don't Fear) The Reaper"
11 Death Cab for Cutie - "Transatlanticism"
12 The Arcade Fire - "Cold Wind"

Enon and Thunderbirds Are Now! to Tour Together

Not every band tours in support of their singles/B-sides/rarities compilations, but then, most bands have discorporated by the time they put one out, and most bands' round-up discs aren't nearly as hot as Enon's Lost Marbles and Exploded Evidence. So let one exception follow the other-- fuck it all, Enon's going on tour. The roadshow will last for most of June, ending, like so many other epic journeys, in Akron.

To top things off, Enon will be joined for the duration by Detroit's Thunderbirds Are Now! and Sparrow, the latter band including members of Zumpano who did not join the New Pornographers (Jason Zumpano himself included). And in case you haven't checked French Kiss Records' website in a while, Thunderbirds Are Now! are already on the road to support their well-recieved Justamustache. The Detroit quartet also have an EP in the can which will be released widely through their original label Action Driver on May 24. The EP, entitled Neck, will contain three songs of new material, plus remixes of "Bodies Adjust" and "Pink Motorcycle Helmet". Oh, and they felt compelled to include a Viking funeral hymn in there. too:

01 Essentially, It's a Viking Funeral Hymn for Those Whom Hath Sired Red-Haired Bezerkers
02 Surrounded By Skanks
03 Bodies Adjust
04 ...& the Chocolate Moustache
05 Pink Motorcycle Helmet (Patrick Dempsey Remix)
06 Do the Splitz & Say, "Neat!"

Thunderbirds Are Now! will continue crawling down the Eastern seaboard on their own for another two weeks, followed by a fortnight off before they hook up with Enon and, well, we already explained what will happen from there. Dates:

Jason Forrest to Release EP, LP

As the ides of May quickly approach, more and more rich hipsters are taking their convertibles out of storage and dusting off that stack of albums marked "Summer CDs." It's safe to say that less than one percent of these piles contain Jason Forrest's epic The Unrelenting Sounds of the 1979 Post Disco Crash, but those who do own it surely like to smirk at those other poor saps who can't find life beyond Rooty.

They'll have even more to smirk about come June 5, when Mr. Forrest, who is also entertainingly known as Donna Summer, releases an EP on Sonig entitled Lady Fantasy. Forrest's website, The Cock Rock Disco (which we're sure is an unbiased source), describes it as "quite experimental" and "groundbreaking artistically." He's experimenting with guest spots, anyway-- here's the tracklist:

01 The Work Ahead of Us (featuring David Grubbs)
02 Lady Fantasy
03 The Lure of You (featuring Margareth Kamerer)
04 Sperry and Foil

Once autumn arrives, Forrest will be putting out a full-length with the critic-baiting title Shamelessly Exciting. But the guy has four months to kill before that gets released, so he's doing what any ADD-riddled electro guru would do: touring Sweden, Germany, and Lithuania. Dates are as follows:

05-14 Hamburg, Bermany - Fundbureau
05-28 Berlin, Germany - Marke B#
06-03 Vilnius, Lithuania - TBA
06-04 Malmo, Sweden - Konta-Musik Festival
06-09 Galway, Ireland - TBA *
06-10 London, England - TBA *
06-11 Bristol, England - TBA *
06-14 Brighton, England - TBA *
06-16 Paris, France - Point Ephemere#

Death From Above 1979 Plan Three New Albums

Posting on Death From Above 1979's official message board, bassist Jesse F. Keeler wrote that they will record an as-yet-untitled album this summer and fall, and expect to complete it before the end of the year for a release in spring 2006. Hot damn! An album with songs and everything!

Wait, that wasn't the impressive part. Here's what's cool: During the recording sessions the band and their cohorts will also produce two additional versions of the album. Says Keeler: "Sebastien [Grainger, DFA 1979's singer and drummer] is getting a band together...a normal band with guitars, keys, bass, etc. and they will record an alternate version of the album. i cant wait to hear it."

Then the remix team of MSTRKRFT, Keeler, and Al-P of Girls Are Short (who produced You're a Woman, I'm a Machine) will make a second alternate version with all-female band Loveheart on vocal duties. Keeler describes the planned approach to the songs on this third pass through them as "more like covers with different arrangements."

But as for the release of all this extra material, no firm plans have been made; Keeler says they might put both alternate versions out as a double CD, edit it down to one 12", or whatever else strikes their fancy (and, presumably, their record company's). Whatever happens, Keeler assures fans that all of MSTRKRFT's output will be available online if it doesn't appear on CD or vinyl.

Brian Wilson to Release Xmas Album, Smile DVD

So you're Brian Wilson, probably the most respected living musician of the classic pop era, and you're coming off the triumph of the ultimate comeback-- 2004's completion of the 30-plus years in the making Smile LP-- what do you do for an encore? That's right, you sing fucking Christmas carols! Yes kids, take a seat on Santa Pitchfork's lap, as according to a recent Billboard.com report, the teen-pop maestro has recently announced details of an upcoming holiday-themed album set for release in time for the Christmas season..

Boasting (can we really call it boasting?) the saccharine-drenched title What I Really Want for Christmas, the Wilson-produced disc will be released on October 18, and features 12 new recordings drawn from holiday standards and original compositions-- including a remake of the 1964 Beach Boys hit "Little Saint Nick" and the Bernie Taupin-penned title track. And while most fans deem the release of any new Brian Wilson album a minor miracle, this recent news leaves many pondering the fate of the long-promised Paul McCartney collaboration that was said to be in the works late last year. But hey, the Christmas album thing worked for Jessica Simpson, so who are we to judge? Merry Christmas:

01 What I Really Want for Christmas
02 Christmasey
03 Little Saint Nick
04 The Man With All the Toys
05 The First Noel
06 Hark, the Herald Angels Sing
07 It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
08 Oh Holy Night
09 We Wish You a Merry Christmas
10 Auld Lang Syne
11 Deck The Halls
12 God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

As previously reported, Wilson will be dropping off an early present to fans, as May 24 will see the release of Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE: DVD via LSL Productions. The comprehensive 2-disc set offers a visual feast for the Smile-obsessed, including David Leaf's excellent documentary Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the Story of SMiLE (which aired on Showtime last fall), a full concert performance of the LP in its entirety, and nearly two hours of never-before-seen bonus footage. A recent fanclub email has also upped the ante on the DVD release, as orders placed for the title through the LSL online store will now yield a bonus CD containing previously unreleased audio content. According to the email, the CD-only material includes an instrumental version of the Smile track "Surf's Up", a new interview with Brian Wilson discussing the album and his recent Grammy win, and commentary by director David Leaf-- who has also lent his autograph to each disc.

And finally, just so we have an excuse to print them again, Wilson will once again be travelling across Europe and North America this summer for another round of concerts on his acclaimed Smile tour. The 39-show trek kicks off in London on June 26th, and is set to feature an eclectic mix of Beach Boys classics, as well as a full performance of the Smile LP. Death Cab for Cutie to Release Tour DVD

Death Cab for Cutie are made for the movies. In Ben Gibbard, they have the the classic protagonist, the everyman whose longing drives him to put all his emotions on the line. And in their music they have the cued strings and the dramatic tonal shifts that speak to the rise and fall of narrative structure. Now, we're not suggesting that Death Cab are going to be stars of the screen, unless you're counting "The O.C.", but they are going to be in a movie.

On Friday, June 10, a documentary titled Drive Well, Sleep Carefully will premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival. Director Justin Mitchell, the man who also helmed the Ted Leo doc Dirty Old Town, followed DCFC during the final days of their 2004 U.S. tour, capturing the band at its candid best through live performances and interviews. The 86-minute film will be screening in select cities this summer and will be released on DVD July 26 via Plexifilm (who also produced the film under it's Plexi Productions banner). And now, the live performances:

"The Sound of Settling" - Portland, OR - The Crystal Ballroom
"The New Year" - Seattle, WA - The Showbox
"We Laugh Indoors" - Tempe, AZ - The Marquee Theatre
"Styrofoam Plates" - Dallas, TX - Trees

Neil Young at Work on New Album

As previously reported, rock fans had an unexpected scare in April when the iconic Neil Young was admitted to a New York hospital after suffering a brain aneurysm. A mere five weeks after successful treatment for the affliction, the legend is already back in the studio recording tracks for his next LP of new material-- his first since 2003's divisive concept album Greendale.

Citing an online post from Young's half-sister, Astrid, the NME has reported that the grunge godfather has recently been holding sessions in an undisclosed Nashville studio with veteran musicians Spooner Oldham, Ben Keith, and Carl Himmel. As Astrid says of her brother's return to recording duties: "He's feeling good, has everything under control and is back in the saddle."

Another collaborator on the latest Young effort, horn player Wayne Jackson, has also offered his insight on the sessions. Citing Ben Keith as co-producer of the upcoming disc, a recent post on Jackson's website read: "The songs sound fantastic! Neil's gifts really shine through, and Wayne had a ball coming up with the arrangements! The studio was vibrating with talent."

As the album is obviously still in the early stages of production, specific details, including song titles and a release date, have yet to be finalized, but we'll keep you posted on any further developments.

Apostle of Hustle Schedules North American Shows

For the Broken Social Scene crew, flying solo or forming slightly different renditions of the band seems to be easier than getting ten bandmates in the same place at the same time. The group is together again, and touring again. However, singer Andrew Whiteman, who is going by Apostle of Hustle these days, will first do some shows on his own. He will be heading out on a short tour through the U.S. and Canada promoting his solo album Folkloric Feel. Apostle of Hustle, which Whiteman started during the formation of BSS, is described by the singer on his website as follows: "Put the red scarf over over the bed lamp, swaying, pulsing syncopated, hearts searching for mirrors in everything from Leonard Cohen to H'assan Hakmoun." Groovy.

Hustle on down:

06-16 Los Angeles, CA - Echo
06-17 San Francisco, CA - Cafe du Nord
06-19 Portland, OR - Douglas Fir Lounge
06-20 Seattle, WA - Chop Suey

06-28 Pittsburgh, PA - Mr. Small's Fun House & Theater
06-29 Philadelphia, PA - North Star
