Edwyn Collins Recovering From Serious Infection

Health problems continue for former Orange Juice frontman Edwyn Collins. CNN reports that Collins underwent a successful life-saving operation in February after two brain hemorrhages, but has recently contracted a serious, antibiotic-resistant infection in the surgical scar.

According to the BBC, the so-called "superbug" MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) has evolved an extraordinary degree of resistance to antibiotics. MRSA is commonly found in hospitals, because the close proximity of so many varieties of staphylococcus and so many types of antibiotics helps to accelerate the mutation process that produces antiobiotic-resistant strains of staph. Although MRSA can be fatal, Collins' wife Grace Maxwell told the Daily Record newspaper that he has responded well to treatment and is "now doing absolutely fine." The MRSA infection, she said, "has been very difficult to get under control" but now doctors were "very happy" with the way Collins has recovered. Collins will soon be returning to the rehab program he was undergoing as a result of the brain operation itself, Maxwell said.
