Murder City Devils to Release DVD

It's been awhile since we've heard anything from those down-and-out Seattle punks, the Murder City Devils. Fear not, MCD lovers, they didn't slit their wrists with that broken bottle they've been singing about for years--they've moved on to other projects (mostly Pretty Girls Make Graves). In fact, frontman Spencer Moody is just about to go on tour alongside the boys from Modest Mouse with his latest project titled, ahem, get ready: Triumph of Lethargy Skinned Alive to Death, a band created with friend and colleague Corey Brewer (Bright Shiny Objects).

Here are the dates for that, with more to come:

06-22 New York, NY - HELPLESS Record Release Show
06-23 Northampton, MA - The Pines Amphitheater
06-25 Portland, ME - The State Theater
06-26 Montreal, Quebec - Court Central @ Stade Uniprix
06-27 Toronto, Ontario - Olympic Island
06-28 London, Ontario - TBA

As for those of you who care less about the Triumph of Lethargy and more about what the hell happened to MCD, they are releasing a DVD titled Balls to the Wall, oh wait, no, it's titled Rock & Roll Won't Wait, documenting the Devils' tour days. Coming out on SoGeneric Pictures. The film, like MCD, isn't exactly new news...it was released on VHS in 2001 when the band initially parted ways, and was also an official selection of the Seattle Film Festival that same year. It is, however, the first time you will be able to play it on a DVD player or a laptop. Yay! The 60-minute film, directed by James Bazan and Jeff Baker, features scenes from the "Broken Bottles, Empty Hearts" tour, various interviews and backstage shots.

Spoon to Head Siren Festival Lineup

Every year around this time, the Village Voice takes an afternoon off from their rail-against-rockism campaign and unending condescension towards independent music fans to kick back, suck down some beers, and hold...a free indie rock concert (!!!) known as the Siren Music Festival. We know, it doesn't make much sense to us, either, short of the fact that their budget precludes them from snagging, say, Jessica and Xtina. Luckily, our confusion is your delight: Previous years' lineups have boasted performances from Modest Mouse, Sleater-Kinney, the Shins, Trail of Dead, TV on the Radio, the Fiery Furnaces, Death Cab for Cutie, Ted Leo, etc etc etc. And so far, it looks like it's gonna be more of the same in '05.

Yes, the lineup's come out, kids, and while it regrettably cain't hold a candle to last year's roster (at least, not at this early juncture), we're impressed they were able to snag indie legends Spoon as headliners. Other artists who've signed on for the event so far include Mates of State, Brendan Benson, VHS or Beta, Dungen, Q and Not U, and the Dears. So, if you're not already planning to hit Chicago on July 16 for Pitchfork's Intonation Festival (wink!), you might consider heading over to Coney Island for this thing. It's scheduled to run from noon to 9 p.m., and keep in mind, it drew over 170,000 fans last year, so if you wanna have any chance of getting splashed with Britt Daniel's hott sweat droplets, get there early. Plus, it's free so you can't bitch if it rains.

For those of you of age, Budweiser will be your beer sponsor; for those of you with hair, Garnier Fructis will be your hair care sponsor. Visit the festival's website for further details.

Lineup Revealed for Live-Aid: Resurrection

As many of you are well aware, there's a world outside your window, and it's a world of dread and fear, where the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears, and the Christmas bells that ring there are the clanging chimes of doom. No one is more attuned to this skull-crushing downer of a sentiment than Bob Geldof, composer of the most guilt-stricken song of all time ("Do They Know It's Christmas") and mastermind of 1985's all-star world-televised benefit concert blowout Live Aid. Well, goddamnit, this is America, and when somebody pisses us off, we plain don't fuck around. Bob Geldof, on the other hand, is Irish, and has made his own plans-- to sing away the sorrow!

Yes, it's all true. After months of repeated denials that any such plan was in the works, Geldof announced last week that a sequel to the trans-Atlantic charity event Live-Aid will take place on July 2, according to NME. The new event has been wittily dubbed "Live 8," as it aims to influence delegates at the annual G8 conference of economically powerful nations from July 6-8. "Eight world leaders in one room in Scotland on the 8th of July can save millions and millions of lives," Geldof passionately pleaded at a news conference in London, before closing the deal with a catch: "But they'll only do it if enough people tell them to!" Actually, Bob, unless there's a vote, that's maybe not exactly how these things work. But you're right: It might mean more coming from Velvet Revolver.

The aged among you may recall that the original concert, held simultaneously on two continents, was dedicated to ending famine in mid-80s celebrity pity-city Ethiopia. But since those efforts unfortunately fell vastly short of the projected goal, Geldof has understandably lowered his sights for the new event to the more modest ambition of ending... all poverty, everywhere. To that end, he's added three more cities-- Berlin, Rome, and Paris-- to 1985's pond-spanning locales of London and... wait, which of North America's five major metropolises did they choose again? Oh right, Philadelphia. Where the cream cheese is.

Alright, alright, but really, behind all this talk of ending poverty, while certainly admirable and deeply, deeply uncynical, there lies an actually very respectable and honorable goal: The Live Aid concerts will be followed by mass rallies during the G8 conference in Edinburgh, calling for cancellation of the crippling debts owed by the world's poorer countries. "What started 20 years ago is coming to a political point in a few weeks," Geldof told the BBC. "There's more than a chance that the boys and girls with guitars will finally get to turn the world on its axis."

Agreed! So... which boys and girls are we talking about? Well, for starters, Geldof hints that the London show may include a Spice Girls reunion, a prospect that no doubt has those bloodthristy IMF vampires quaking in their John Lobb loafers. And while further hotly rumored headliners like Eminem, Outkast, and the Rolling Stones are not confirmed at press time, no one's going to miss them amid the weird and wonderful juxtapositions of each of the following bills:

Hyde Park, London: Coldplay, The Killers, Velvet Revolver, Bob Geldof, The Cure, Mariah Carey, Dido, Keane, Snow Patrol, Elton John, Annie Lennox, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Razorlight, Snoop Dogg, Sting, U2, Joss Stone, Stereophonics, REM, Scissor Sisters, Muse, Robbie Williams.

Ben Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia: Will Smith, Bon Jovi, The Dave Matthews Band, Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, Puff Daddy, Il Divo, Maroon 5, Rob Thomas, Keith Urban, 50 Cent, Sarah McLachlan, Kaiser Chiefs.

Circus Maxmimus, Rome: Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Duran Duran, Jovan Otti, Nek, Laura Pausini, Vasco Rossi, Zucchero.

Brandenburg Gate, Berlin: A-Ha, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Lauryn Hill, Brian Wilson, Bap, Die Toten Hosen, Peter Maffay.

Eiffel Tower, Paris: Jamiroquai, Placebo, Youssou N'Dour, Andrea Docelli, Craig David, Calo Gero, Kyo, Yannick Noah, Axelle Red, Johnny Hallyday, Manu Chao, Renaud.

Although the shows will be free, the London event will lack any actual destitute people; passes are being distributed via a text-messaging lottery on June 6. But unlike the original Live Aid's alms-for-the-poor approach, Live 8 does go some distance toward publicizing and confronting the underlying inequalities in the world economic system. Plus, Jamiroquai and Johnny Hallyday will finally share a stage. Tonight, thank God it's them instead of you.

Dungen to Tour U.S. in July

Fresh off a successful UK tour, reigning Swedish psych-masters Dungen have announced a short set of American tour dates, according to their agent. Probably still a wee shy as their breakout LP Ta Det Lugnt has yet to get a proper U.S. release, the band will confine themselves to the main cultural centers in the Northeast, Midwest, and West coast. The tour will also include two festival stops, one at Pitchfork's own Intonation Festival, and the other at the Village Voice's own Siren Festival.

Hopefully, this reticence in the tour van will be overcome when Ta Det Lugnt gets a North American release on August 2 through Kemado Records. Also, according to the band's website, our friends on the other side of the pond will get a release date sooner, June 6 to be exact, followed by a single release of "Panda", both on Memphis Industries. After that fanfare of domestic album issues, hopefully the following spate of tour dates will become a quaint memory we'll a laugh at. Behemoth tours for behemoth guitars! Dates:

07-08 San Francisco, CA - Bottom of the Hill
07-09 Los Angeles, CA - Troubadour
07-13 Cambridge, MA - Middle East (upstairs)
07-14 Hoboken, NJ - Maxwell's
07-15 Philadelphia, PA - First Unitarian Church
07-16 New York, NY - Siren Festival
07-17 Chicago, IL - Intonation Festival
07-19 Chicago, IL - Empty Bottle

NIN Pull Out of MTV Movie Awards

This just in: Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor does not support George W. Bush or his, like, total bullshit war!!!!!

Yup, Reznor and company, who are still doing a big ol' victory lap around the U.S. in celebration of their surprisingly splendid comeback record With Teeth, recently backed out of a slotted MTV Movie Awards Performance after the network expressed hesitation about their proposed live-show backdrop, a picture of our current President.

"We were set to perform 'The Hand That Feeds' with an unmolested, straightforward image of George W. Bush as the backdrop," Reznor told fans via the band's website. "Apparently the image of our President is as offensive to MTV as it is to me." Take that, suits!

So, now we got MTV runnin' around doing damage control and making sterile statements like this: "While we respect Nine Inch Nails' point of view, we were uncomfortable with their performance being built around a partisan political statement. When we discussed our discomfort with the band, their choice was to unfortunately pull out of the Movie Awards."

But, this is showbiz, so as one band pulls out, another'll pull in. We are assured that the Foo Fighters-- who will hopefully perform in front of a huge picture of John Kerry-- are now slated to fill the void left by the commies in Nine Inch Nails, who have been detained for question by the U.S. government.

After they're untied and allowed to put their clothes back on, the Nails will be hitting the road all over again, this time with Interscope buddies Queens of the Stone Age. Unfortunately, that was all we had to work with at press time, but the band's website does estimate a mid-September jump off for the tour and promises a full itinerary soon.

The Strokes' Third LP Nears Completion

This just in from Pitchfork's About Fucking Time desk: A recent fan club letter from manager/video diva Ryan Gentles has finally revealed some near-concrete details on the the Strokes' long-gestating third album. According to the email, the band are presently wrapping up production on 13 as-yet-untitled songs in contention for the disc, with a final tracklist to be finalized in the coming months.

"I can tell you that there are 13 songs that are nearly fully completed," Gentles explained. "This is NOT to say that there will be 13 songs on the album...maybe there will, maybe there won't...some could be b-sides...we'll decide that when the recording is 100% done."

And while that's just short of, "Um, thanks for nothing," it's the first real sign of completion we've been able to pass along since sessions for the project first got underway in a New York studio last year. As for a release date, Manager Stroke was similarly vague on that matter, but stated that the LP is tentatively slated for a January 2006 arrival, with the first single likely hitting radio this fall, "maybe October/November."

While it's nice to get some kind of realistic projection on the album's launch, this new date is a few months later than fans had originally expected, as a January 2005 email from Gentles once assured: "We're confident that it will come out sometime this year." If the 2006 date sticks, it will mark a gap of over two years since their previous release, the sophomore effort Room on Fire.

As previously reported, the Strokes' latest platter is being co-produced by David Kahne (Paul McCartney, Sugar Ray) and the group's longtime collaborator, Gordon Raphael. Gentle's latest email also goes on to confirm that recording veteran Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Jeff Buckley) will be mixing the album once production wraps-- which is said to conclude this July. And for those skeptics out there, we'd like to remind you of singer Julian Casablancas' March 2005 assurance that the record "will be better than the last one." Bacdafucup!

Finally, Gentles also notes that some pre-release touring may possibly hit Europe, Japan, and Australia later this year, but as is his way, those details will be be confirmed at a later date, cautioning that if they do happen, "These venues would likely be VERY small club shows, and just a small handful of cities."

A handful of U.S. shows are also being considered before the album drops. Post-release, however, the band are expected to sport a much lengthier schedule than that in support of their previous offering. "After the album is released, we plan on doing much more extensive touring than we did on Room on Fire," Gentles assured. "Hang in there...much too soon to have detailed information on that, but we're setting up some pretty substantial touring."

Phew, now that that one's finally coming together, we've got our ever-obsessive sights set on you, Mr. Yorke.

The White Stripes Announce Summer Tour

Jack and Meg, currently completing a Central and South American tour, have graced us with the first round of U.S. tour dates in support of their upcoming album Get Behind Me Satan. We here at Pitchfork HQ have been (un)fortunate enough to hear one of the B-sides, "Who's a Big Baby?" Let's just say that you'd do very well to stick to the A-side, and that there's a reason B-sides are left off of albums.

Iron & Wine Announce Short Tour

Now that the dust kicked up by the Woman King EP has settled, and the future dust of a collaboration with Calexico remains temporarily undisturbed, Sam Beam's yellowed folk vehicle Iron & Wine will be taking its new-found appreciation for a nice loud banjo on the road this June. And, really, you should do your best to catch him if you can, 'cause this may be your last chance until well after the fall release of that seven-song EP with Calexico on Overcoat Recordings.

The 14-date jaunt will kick off in Beam's native Florida-- Tallahassee, to be exact-- on June 8, and wind its way through a few of these United States, towing rootsters Band of Horses along in the opening slot. And, yes, Beam will be one of the many to play this year's surprisingly loaded Bonnaroo festival, which will also include sets by Joanna Newsom, Modest Mouse, My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon, Secret Machines, Mouse on Mars, RjD2, the Frames, Brazilian Girls, and a shit-ton of bands that sound like Widespread Panic. Please, Sam, just promise us you'll stay away from the patchouli. Dates:

Black Mountain to Join Coldplay on tour

Well, they do say it's the quiet ones you have to watch out for. It must be true, because according to their Australian label, Low Transit Recordings, referential rockers Black Mountain have been asked to support none other than arena anthem giants Coldplay on most of that band's upcoming U.S./Canada tour. Somehow we can't picture the Coldplay boys trading in their designer-downtrodden clothes for authentic Jack Daniels sleeveless bacteria traps any time soon. Nor do we imagine Mr. Paltrow putting young daughter Apple to bed with a soothing Black Mountain lullaby of "the war machine keeps on rolling/ Evil minds and hearts of stone". But maybe that's just us.

While the pairing might seem odd at first blush, there's a simple explanation: Coldplay love the rawk. Allegedly, a Black Mountain tour of U.S. and Canada will be announced soon for September, but until that time North Americans will have to make do with the cavernous environs of Coldplay-size venues if they want to witness Black Mountain's continued campaign to rescue heavy rock from the scrap heap of history. Follow the dates:

In record news, the Vancouver quintet will re-release the trippy trance of "Druganaut" on a CD EP by Jagjaguwar this June 7. A 12" single for the track (taken from Black Mountain's self-titled debut) was originally released in November 2004 and included "Druganaut (Remix)" and "Buffalo Swan". These tracks will be collected on the EP along with "Bicycle Man" (from their split 7" single with Destroyer) and "No Satisfaction (Campfire Version)".
