Happy Mondays Prepping New Material, Releasing DVD

Fuck the next Indiana Jones flick, it's time to start working on that 24 Hour Party People sequel, what with Tony Wilson's 2005 revival of Factory Records (now F4 Records), and the recent slate of live activity from former Factory (fallen) superstars the Happy Mondays.

After a return to active duty was rumored in 2004, the raveadelic superheros have since gone on to perform two large-scale concerts this year, which marked only their second and thirrd shows of the decade. And while details are scant, the NME is reporting that frontman Shaun Ryder has recently written a pair of new tracks which will be featured during the band's set at the upcoming UK festival Get Loaded in the Park.

Get Loaded in the Park, quite possibly the most accurately named music festival of all time, is now in its second year, and will take place at Clapham Common in London on August 28. The Happy Mondays will be headlining the electronica-heavy day, which will also feature performances from such acts as Stereo MCs, the Farm, Flowered Up, Fatboy Slim, Paul Oakenfold, and Armand Van Helden, as well as special DJ sets from Snow Patrol and ex-Stone Roses bassist Mani. Baggy pants and pacifier necklaces mandatory for admission.

While the Mondays' recent songwriting news possibly points the way towards future albums from the outfit, nothing can be confirmed as of this date. If songs do make it to disc, however, they will be the group's first new studio material since 1992's famously disastrous car-wreck of an LP, Yes, Please. Yeah, try to think of Oasis' Be Here Now, but with more drugs and no hooks. Hey, there's nowhere to go but up, right?

If you can't make it to Get Loaded in the Park, we suggest you head on out to a local park on August 28 and, well, you know. If that doesn't leave you hungover enough, then seek out a copy of the Happy Mondays: Live in Barcelona DVD, which captures the band's comeback performance last December. It's only available in Britain right now, but fear not, for October 4 brings the magic to our shores.

New Deadly Snakes Album Coming in September

Cold-blooded Toronto garage eccentrics the Deadly Snakes will release Porcella, their fourth full-length, in two versions on September 27. The first fruit of their new union with fellow Canuckleheads Paper Bag Records (former home of Stars and Broken Social Scene) will come in differing CD and vinyl versions, both taking a step away from rock hysterics into the "mellow and weird," as singing keyboardizer Age of Danger (yes, that's his "name") told Spill magazine: "There's a lot of strange sounds on there. We basically locked ourselves up in this cabin with a bunch of weird instruments and did the album."

Consumers of digital media on plastic 5" discs will hear this version of the album:

Across the Narrows Fest Lineup Announced

Finally, an outdoor rock music festival that answers the question, "Do all outdoor festivals have to take place in the middle of the summer, on the hottest days of the year?" The answer: no. This fall will bring the first-ever Across the Narrows (renamed from Across the Pond) Festival in New York City. The extravaganza will take place simultaneously on Coney Island and Staten Island on October 1 and 2. Promoters just released the final lineup, which includes Pixies, the Killers, Beck, and Oasis as the four headliners. Other acts making the bill include Gang of Four, Built to Spill, New York Dolls, Interpol, Belle and Sebastian and-- why not?-- the reunited Lemonheads. Oddly enough, they seem to have booked mostly sucky bands for Staten Island, and mostly cool ones for Brooklyn. Funny how that happened, huh?

Tickets go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. EST time through Ticketmaster and the Ron Delsener Presents website. There'll be individual tickets for each of the four concerts for $55.00 a night, or you can pick up tickets to two shows for $100.00. Sure, these ain't Intonation prices, but you're still seeing the Pixies for under ten bucks. The concerts will take place at Keyspan Park in Brooklyn and Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Staten Island, home of minor league teams for the Mets and the Yankees, respectively. The full lineups:

10-1:

Coney Island:
Pixies
Gang of Four
Built to Spill
Rilo Kiley
Death From Above 1979
Mando Diao
Nine Black Alps

Staten Island:
The Killers
New York Dolls
Interpol
British Sea Power
Tegan and Sara
The Ordinary Boys
Lake Trout

10-2:

Coney Island:
Beck
Belle & Sebastian
The Polyphonic Spree
The Raveonettes
Gang Gang Dance
Whirlwind Heat
Special guest TBA

Staten Island:
Oasis
Jet
Doves

Q and Not U's Chris Richards Discusses New Project

A month ago, Pitchfork reported the disbandment of Dischord mainstays Q and Not U, quoting band member Chris Richards as saying, "We feel we've reached all of our shared goals as Q and Not U and we're ready to move on to other projects in life." He wasn't kidding. By phone, Richards told Pitchfork that he hopes to release an album of songs under the moniker Ris Paul Ric some time this fall. (ChRIS PAUL RIChards, get it?) Describing the music, Richards said, "I just wrote them in the bedroom, so obviously they're quiet 'cause I have neighbors and roommates and all that stuff. But people have said they sound like the quieter songs on the last Q and Not U album."

Quiet, however, doesn't necessarily mean unadventurous. This past January, Richards traveled to Ottowa to record the songs with laptop scientist Tim Hecker (a relationship, Richards said, indirectly brought about by a Pitchfork interview, in which Hecker mentioned that he liked Q and Not U). Of the process, Richards said, "I went up there with the songs barely finished, and he would go to work in the daytime. I was just there for a week, and I would be tracking lots of vocal tracks and guitar tracks, some quiet percussion, a bass line here or there, and then he'd come home at night and we'd listen to it and then we'd add some more textures so that we'd have a lot of stuff to work from. And then for the past month or so he's been periodically working on it." By which, Richards means Hecker is performing his sound manipulation talents on music that falls on the softer side of the spectrum, something he's shown great talent for on records like 2001's Haunt Me, Haunt Me, Do It Again.

Before that record's release, which is expected to come out on a friend's label, Richards will be touring with Dan Caldas, formerly of Black Eyes, whose role is to approximate Hecker's sonic presence and provide auxiliary percussion. "Live, I try to make it a lot more ethereal. The guitars are run through delays...I was listening to it on vacation at the beach and I felt really good and was hoping maybe people will [hear the music] and feel like they're at the beach." The tour still has five more dates left and features opening solo sets by two other ex-Black Eyes members, Jacob Long (aka Earthen Sea) and Daniel Martin McCormick.

Richards also said he definitely will start another band, and that Ris Paul Ric is not his "life's calling," but more of a stop-gap measure. In fact, he began writing and recording the material while Q and Not U was in full swing. You can visit the Ris Paul Ric myspace page to listen to a couple of the tracks, and if you're feeling particularly East-Coastish, you can check out the rest of his tour. Look! He's playing in a children's museum!

08-11 Richmond, VA - Children's Museum of Richmond
08-12 Baltimore, MD - Current Gallery
08-13 Philadelphia, PA - Space 1026*
08-14 New York, NY - Knitting Factory
08-15 New York, NY - 169 Bar#

* with Colleen, A Hawk and A Hacksaw
# with Prewar Yardsdale, BANANAS

But wait! Q and Not U haven't exactly broken up just yet. They're following the D-Plan method of saying goodbye, as they have added three more farewell shows since they announced their demise. The final kiss-off remains in the band's hometown, Washington, D.C., but now New York and Philadelphia will get one last glimpse of the band's glory. They're content with what they've accomplished as a band, but are you content with missing their last go-round? All dates with Supersystem:

09-20 New York, NY - Knitting Factory (all-ages, early show)
09-20 New York, NY - Knitting Factory (late show)
09-21 Philadelphia, PA - First Unitarian Church

Deerhoof to Play with the Roots, Tour

First, to get you all juiced: "Baby, seems we never ever agree/ You like the movies/ And I like T.V./ I take things serious/ And you take 'em light/ I go to bed early/ And I party all night...And you know it ain't fiction/ Just a natural fact/ We come together/ 'Cuz opposites attract." Thank you, Paula Abdul!

At first glance, most wouldn't think that organic Philly hip-hop crew the Roots and Bay Area experimental pop freakazoids Deerhoof would make the most compatible of dance partners. (Sample Roots lyric: "Yo, I walk across this world that's deceptive/ Beats are perfected/ The ghetto's infested/ With more destruction/ My vocal eruption/ Was speakin' 'bout corruption / With no introduction." Sample Deerhoof lyric: "Panda! Panda! Panda! Panda!") But something inspired ?uestlove and co. to invite da Hoof, along with TV on the Radio, to open their Illadelph hometown show on September 16 at the ritzy Verizon Theatre at the Kimmel Centre for the Performing Arts. (Tickets go on sale on August 15.)

Sure, it's a little mind-boggling: The Roots, TV on the Radio, and Deerhoof performing together on the same stage that the Philadelphia Orchestra calls home. But if you think about it, all three bands take a left-of-center approach to making music, and they're all killer live acts who have cultivated a fan base mostly through touring. Plus, critics love 'em. So maybe opposites attract because we're all the same deep down inside?

Enough with the Mr. Rogers-isms, we've got tour dates to report! The show in Philadelphia will be one of the first of Deerhoof's fall outing in support of their upcoming album, The Runners Four, due to be released on October 11 by Kill Rock Stars/5RC. Certain Pitchfork staffers can be found lying on their backs, tongues lolling out of their mouths, if anybody even says the word "runners" nowadays.

Here's the schedule for the tour, obviously with plenty of gaps to be filled:

Dungen to Return to U.S. for Longer Tour

Last month we reported that Dungen had an easy tour-- just a handful of dates (which included Intonation) in the US. But there's one thing about the Swedish: they never ever do nothin' nice and easy. Instead the band will polish off their current Brazil/UK tour and launch right into a fairly extensive US/Canada tour starting in Hoboken in mid-September, snaking their way around the country and finishing off back in New York in October.

This fuller, meatier tour schedule is probably a result of their fantastic Ta Det Lugnt finally seeing US release on Kemado Records the first week of August. Or it could be their seizure-inducing video for "Panda," which debuted on MTV2's Subterranean two weeks ago and looks a lot like the kind of thing you see if you squinch your eyes closed when listening to Dungen (floating hands, explosions, lots of cuts, red stuff).

Beck to Tour in Fall, Open for Stones

Good news for you midwestern and eastern folk. The cavalry drums on Beck's official web site have announced additional tour dates for the rest of the states as well as couple of stops in wonderful Canadia. After playing the west coast and headlining the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, the cherub-cheeked rocker will continue his Guero tour starting on September 19 in Minnesota. Along the way, he'll engage in a skinniest legs contest with Keith Richards and Mick Jagger when he shares the stage three times with them and the rest of The Rolling Stones. And before finishing it up in...Jersey (isn't that a bit anti-climactic after playing with the Stones?), he'll also stop over in Brooklyn for the Across the Narrows Fest. Where it’s at:

09-19 Minneapolis, MN - Wilkins Auditorium

The Narrator Hit the Road

Chicago punks the Narrator continue to dodge that stinging report card tag, "Does Not Work Up to Potential." They followed up their lackluster debut EP Youth City Fire, with a strong longplayer, Such Triumph, released June 28th on Flameshovel records. Now the band is set to unleash their notoriously fiery live show on an unsuspecting East Coast. Along for the ride will be brethren Aloha and labelmates Make Believe. Bear in mind, this is the same act our own Nick Sylvester once heralded as "the most dangerous concert I've ever been to-- and possibly the best." That's right, mid-set covers of "The Electric Slide" could result in injury, embarrassment, and boogieing-down. Oh yeah, this is called the "Siblings with Benefits" tour. Eww!

Minus the Bear Ready to Rock

Uh oh, looks like Minus the Bear have up and matured on us. The Seattle math-rockers, previously known mostly for their silly song titles ("Hey, Wanna Throw Up? Get Me Naked", "Get Me Naked 2: Electric Boogaloo"), will release Menos El Oso (which is Spanish for, duh, Minus the Bear) on Suicide Squeeze on Aug 23, an album with a strikingly unfunny tracklisting. Check it out:

05 El Torrente
06 Pachuca Sunrise
07 Michio's Death Drive

Wow, what happened? Quoth the accompanying press release: "Minus The Bear's days of writing 'songs about drinking and girls' are done and gone-- instead replaced by tales of money as metaphor, stripped innocence, and lovelorn remembrance." Bo-oring!

Luckily, dudes still bring the pain live, and they've got a lengthy trek planned for this fall, with such luminaries as Thuderbirds Are Now!, labelmates Headphones and recent Saddle Creek signees Criteria.

(Please note that publicists, managers, booking agents, and other artist representatives are generally exempt from this rule, but will also be granted anonymity if requested.)
