(International) Noise Conspiracy Tour With the Bravery
Say what you will about the Bravery, but at least they aren't worried about being blown off the stage by clearly superior opening acts. Silly kids. The spiky-haired synth-poppers spent the summer headlining over Hard-Fi's first North American shows, they just wrapped up a West Coast tour with VHS or Beta, and starting Sunday night, they will dare to share the stage with the (International) Noise Conspiracy, the finest socialist rock-garage-punk cadre in Sweden. At least Sly Stone had the good sense (or the heroin-fueled paranoia) to boot the Wailers off his 1972 tour when Bob Marley starting showing him up every night. Jeez, even the careerists don't know how to play the game these days. But enough shooting fashionista fish in a barrel. This is about the (International) Noise Conspiracy, who will wrap up their Bravery dates in Boston on October 13 and then join up with fellow Scandinavians Turbonegro the very next night in L.A. The tour wraps up at the Iceland Airwaves Festival in Reykjavik, Iceland on October 22, where they'll freeze alongside Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Annie, Junior Senior, the Fiery Furnaces, the Perceptionists, Architecture in Helsinki, Babyshambles, Ratatat and many more.
That's a hard slog, but it's all in the name of love-- specifically Armed Love, the Rick Rubin-produced full-length that will finally hit U.S. punters this Tuesday, Oct 4, more than a year after its release overseas. If you haven't already, erm, found the record somewhere, you can hear the whole thing in streaming audio on the band's web site, or selections from it live on stage.
Whether you use the streaming-audio player or attend the live show, expect T(I)NC to accompany the music with militant verbal jeremiads that pin monopoly capitalism to the floor and deliver a few well-aimed kicks to its tender, fleshy parts. Because if they don't, who will? A band that's not on a major label and doesn't play Clear Channel shows? Ha, I scoff at you.
Capitalism stole my virginity:

Brian Wilson, Hidden Cameras Join Katrina Relief
Like the Rolling Stones, the musical response to Hurricane Katrina just don't stop. In a week that saw government officials catfighting over who was to blame for the tragedy, it's good to know that us rock and roll dorks can find something we can all agree on. And that's getting to talk to Brian Wilson:* Brian Wilson will make a personal telephone call to anyone who donates $100 or more to the relief effort through his website. Wilson will also match all donations. So if you're dying to know what "columnated ruins domino" means, or what it's like to have written the second-greatest album of all time ('cause Sgt. Pepper's is always number one, duh), better empty that PayPal account by Saturday, October 1, because that's when Brian hangs up the phone.
* The Chicago indie scene will come together for a benefit show at the Fireside Bowl on October 3. Tim Kinsella's latest rawk machine, Make Believe will headline, and Bobby Conn, Midstates, No Funeral, and the Magic will also perform, with proceeds going to ACORN (The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now).
* Three of Toronto's best indie bands, the Hidden Cameras, the Sadies, and the Deadly Snakes, will perform at "Rise: A Benefit for Musicians Displaced by Hurricane Katrina" on Saturday, October 8, at the Silver Dollar in Toronto. Proceeds will go to the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund, as well as Quintron and Miss Pussycat and Jerry Teel (Knoxville Girls, Boss Hog, Cheater Slicks), who lost their homes to flooding.
* Also rocking for Quintron and Miss Pussycat are California noise-trash-punx Kill Me Tomorrow, My Sexual Dad, LiqdZunshine and Lipstick Terror. They will stage a benefit at the Che Café in La Jolla, Calif., on October 7.
* R. Kelly's "Let Your Light Shine," first performed during "S.O.S. (Saving OurSelves): The BET Relief Telethon," is now on sale at online music outlets as a benefit for the Red Cross. Yes, it sounds like "I Believe I Can Fly."
* Similarly, Dixie Chicks have put a new song, "I Hope," up for sale in various digital music stores, with all profits going to Habitat for Humanity and the American Federation of Musicians Gulf Coast Relief Fund. The track, co-written by the Chicks and bluesman Keb' Mo', was produced by the Chicks and Rick Rubin. (The Dixie Chicks are the next Johnny Cash, mark my words.) The song was first performed on the "Shelter From The Storm: A Concert For The Gulf Coast" telethon.
* Badman Recording Co., home of such sadcore staples as Mark Kozelek, Rebecca Gates and James William Hindle, is donating the entire wholesale price of each Badman disc sold on CD Baby to the Red Cross.
* Usher will headline "Project Restart" at Atlanta's Phillips Arena on October 9. 5,000 free tickets will be available for Gulf Coast evacuees living in the Atlanta area.

John Vanderslice Kicks Off American Tour Tonight
I can't help but wonder if John Vanderslice ever sleeps. ‘Cause it seems like all he ever does is play music. The manic singer/songewriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer released Pixel Revolt on Barsuk records about a month ago, and tonight he and his band (dubbed The Photographs, but apparently the name will change from tour to tour, according to his newsletter) will begin a looong tour playing, like, every single city in the U.S. It's called the "I've Been Living in a K-Hole" tour, and don't we all feel like that every once in awhile?Vanderslice and The Photographs will brave our country's wild with a slew of other bands, including The Double, Crystal Skulls, and Portastatic. Hey, someone has to fill the musical void down in Normon, Oklahoma while Kenny Chesney is finalizing his divorce. After rockin' America like a hurricane, Vanderslice will head to Europe with drummer/Moog-er Dave Douglas as his accompaniment.
To close out this little Vanderslice blotter, go to his website for various mp3s, photos, and just about everything you could possibly need to accompany Pixel Revolt. He's got lyrics, a recording diary, and lest I forget, a user's guide. Why a user's guide? I don't know. Just go to the website, buy the album, or check out the tour. They're apparently using R. Kelly's TP3: Reloaded as exit music at every show. For real, yo.

Neil Michael Hagerty's Howling Hex Taking on TV
Leave it up to Neil Michael Hagerty to keep things psychotic. Just when you thought he couldn't possibly outdo the spectacularly debauched, drug-induced mania of Royal Trux, his latest project the Howling Hex gives his previous band a run for its money. Why just make wacko music when you can produce wacko television, too?On November 15, Drag City will release You Can't Beat Tomorrow a combination CD/DVD featuring the pilot episode of the Howling Hex's variety show "You Can't Beat Tomorrow" and its soundtrack. On the recording, Hagerty handles lead vocal and guitar duties, backed by the Theatre Fire (Donald Feagin, Curtis Heath, Mark Castaneda, Jesse Brakefield, Sean French and Nick Prendergast) on banjo, violin, trumpet, and pedal guitar. I guess the Arcade Fire were busy.
The DVD of You Can't Beat Tomorrow "weaves a collage of every-day images, musical segments and a hilarious animated serial following a group of all-American types down at Henry's bar", according to a press release. It also includes a documentary about the making of the show, an animated episode of desert creatures Cowboy and Jack, and the broadcast version of the Howling Hex's television commercial from 2003. Hey, who ate all the mushrooms? CD tracklist:

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings Funk All Over the World
Get on the good foot: Brooklyn soul powerhouse Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings are hitting the road, jack, and won't come back until...well, until the tour is over.Jones released Naturally to rave reviews earlier this year on funk revivalist label Daptone Records, following her 2002 cult hit Dap Dippin' With Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Imagine a world where James Brown and Al Green LPs from 1968 were held as iconic templates from which all future music should be based, where analog production, horns and funky drums are the building blocks of life, and you'll get an idea of where Jones, a former prison guard, is coming from. Alternatively, you could take her word for it: "If you can't feel the music on this album, then you must be a dead ass!"
Jones and her crew are on the road right now, hitting a nice chunk of the Western Hemisphere, so get off your dead ass and groove:

Thom Yorke Considering Meeting With Tony Blair
From Pitchfork's "We Keep Track of Every Move Radiohead Makes" Department:This morning, you probably went through the "All-Stars or Pumas?" routine, moved on to a 10-minute debate over whether or not shaggy hair really does look best, and finally, sealed the deal with the choice to wear that hideous SpongeBob SquarePants watch. Celebrities, however, have real decisions to make, decisions that can impact everything from Ben Affleck's likeliness of winning another Academy Award (zilch) to the fate of planet Earth. Fortunately for all of us, Thom Yorke holds his stakes in the latter. Or sort of, anyway.
Last May, Yorke made his way to British Parliament as a representative of the Friends of the Earth campaign, in an attempt to get the government involved with decreasing the UK's impact on global warming. Writing in the Radiohead blog Dead Air Space on Wednesday, Yorke relayed to fans the charity's latest request for his involvement.
Friends of the Earth asked this Radio head if he would meet with Prime Minister Tony Blair at Downing Street to discuss what the government "is not doing about climate change." Karma police, arrest this man! But Yorke hasn't made up his mind on whether or not he wants to go.
In a respectably honest confession, Yorke wrote, "i have no intention of being used by spider spin doctors to make it look like we make progress when it is just words. id love to know what you think but i cant ask. youd say oh ther e he goes again interfering and meddling in politics why doesnt he get on with the music and shut up. perhaps because i feel like a hypocrit if dont do anything, and equally feel like a hypocrit if i try getting involved... id love to forget about it like your average Times reader. wed all like it to go away. turn to to the rising sea and say come back later im busy right now."
He closed the entry with a request for decision-making assistance and a good ol' fashioned "politics is poision." We hope the next set of liner notes have an editor. Damn.
Yorke also gave a lil' update on the progress of Radiohead's upcoming album, announcing the titles of two tracks: "Pay Day" and "Burn the (White?) Witch." Since there are bound to be a few more in the works, we'd like to offer the following song titles as a sign of our deep Radiohead love: "Prime Time: A Day in the Life of Tony Blair" and "Googlefight: Blair VS. Bush." Do with them what you will, Mr. Yorke, do with them what you will.
Gogol Bordello Bringing Gypsy Punk to America
A band with a strong international pedigree, Gogol Bordello don't seem to mind living on the road. Starting tonight in Philadelphia, the self-described gypsy punk cabaret group is bringing their high-intensity theatrics to most of the US and large stretches of Western Europe, in support of their recently-released fifth LP, Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike (produced by Steve Albini, yo). What twisted plotlines and costume designs will they unveil? How many venues will they get kicked out of?Gogol frontman Eugene Hutz is currently earning plaudits for his role in Everything Is Illuminated, the film adaptation of one of the biggest lit-fiction hits in the past ten years. The movie, directed by Liev Schreiber and co-starring Elijah Wood, has already opened in the NYC, LA and several other major markets, but will be incrementally released at 10-20 more cities every week for the next month. Call it a creeping Hutz takeover.

Caribou to Release New EP, DVD
On November 1, Caribou (aka Dan Snaith, fka Manitoba) will dilate our minds with Marino, a DVD collection of the videos featured during his live shows. You know, all those pretty, drippy, colorful trips through alternate universes we've been enjoying over the past couple of years, while trying not to be distracted by the multiple drummers and animal masks. In addition to a video for nearly every track on The Milk of Human Kindness and Up in Flames the DVD comes with a bonus EP containing four exclusive tracks from the Milk of Human Kindness Sessions. So I guess that kind of makes this the The Massacre: Special Edition of indie-psych-IDM.
Marino will be birthed courtesy of Domino in North American and Leaf in the rest of the world. The DVD will also be available on Caribou's current European tour, a month prior to its official release. Are the bragging rights of having this DVD early worth flying to the UK show for? Keep in mind the Miami Dolphins are a States thing. (Get it? Marino? Dan Marino? Ok, I'm going to go bang my head against the wall now.)

Dungen to Release Stadsvandringar in U.S.
You know that kickass throwback psych band Dungen we've been creaming over for a year or so? Some of you may think they named themselves after a dark, damp prison. Others may believe it has something to do with feces. Only a teensy fraction of the world (ahhm-- according to our, uh, statistics) holds the truth. Straight from the press release that graced our e-mail box yesterday: Dungen is "pronounced Doon-Yun." Well, don't we feel stupid now for telling you it was prounounced "dung-in" last month.Ok, enough, on the real news. As you know, Dungen let their album Ta Det Lugnt loose on the United States earlier this year, after all the cool kids bought up imports. Well readers, good work. For once, it seems you backed off the illegal downloading and got off your behinds to purchase an album. Due to Dungen's U.S. success, Astralwerks is bringing the band's 2002 album, Stadsvandringar, all the way to the Fifty Nifty United States for the first time ever! Stadsvandringar, which translates roughly to "City Walks", will hit shelves on October 4, which happens to be this coming Tuesday, so we recommend you form a single file line outside the record store door starting...NOW.
While you're out on the town, remember to stop by your local venue. You might see some long, blonde hair and flutes flying about:

New Order's Peter Hook Embarks on U.S. DJ tour
While New Order frontman Bernard Sumner has worked a nifty DJ sideline for some time now, his bandmate Peter Hook is known more for his towering bass lines and his whiskery scruff than his prowess on the wheels of steel. But move over, Bernie, because The Bearded One is kicking off the "240-Hour Non-Stop Party People" American tour tonight. The man whose four strings have propelled countless 3 a.m. Hook-ups (ugh, sorry) will don headphones and jockey discs at these places and times:
09-29 Baltimore, MD - The Ottobar
09-30 New York, NY - Lotus
10-01 Buffalo, NY - SoundLab
10-02 Chicago, IL - Smart Bar
10-03 Madison, WI - TBA
10-04 Milwaukee, WI - TBA
10-05 Austin, TX - The Parish
10-06 Denton, TX - Hailey's
10-07 Miami, FL - Revolver
10-08 Orlando, FL - The Social
But what if an in-person encounter with a member of New Order is just too intimate? What if your isolation, alienation, and dead emotions force you to keep those you care about at a safe remove? And what if, furthermore, you happen to live within an easy drive of Los Angeles? Then this must be your lucky week, because a selection of New Order's classic videos will be big-screened at the L.A. installment of the video-nerd extravaganza Resfest. Clips by the likes of Jonathan Demme and William Wegman will roll at the Spielberg Theatre at 7 p.m. on September 30.
After the DJ tour, Hook will hustle back to Old Blighty for New Order's set at "Keeping it Peel: The John Peel Day Launch Event" in London on October 12, in honor of the deceased DJ. Besides New Order, the concert boasts an odd but Peel-approved lineup that stretches from Laura Cantrell and Super Furry Animals to the Fall and '70s reggae veterans Misty in Roots. It's actually the night before John Peel Day, which we suppose makes it John Peel Eve.
That's not all Hooky's doing for Peely: in one of the odder collaborations in recent recording history, a BBC Radio One report says that Hook recently joined the Futureheads and Jeff Beck (no, not Beck, Jeff Beck) to record a cover of the Buzzcocks' "Ever Fallen in Love" for a double-disc Peel tribute compilation, due out October 17 in the UK. Our favorite part of this is that now Ian Curtis and onetime Beck bandmate Eric Clapton are only three degrees apart. We're totally going to zing those uppity record store clerks with that one! We can taste the "oh, snap" already!

Jamie Lidell Begins American Tour Tonight
So this is what happened to blue-eyed soul? Not to draw a line from Dusty Springfield to Hall and Oates to Jamie Lidell (seriously, not going to draw it), but the Brit crooner/produer's great 2005 record, Multiply, has a lot more in common with those giants than most of his Warp Records labelmates (except for Aphex Twin, we know he got soul). Lidell has the voice, and, according to his promo shots, he has the blue eyes. Also according to his website, he has a stage show befitting a soul singer (movement, instruments, costumes).Starting tonight, Lidell brings his revue to our American shores. Take a trip and multiply:
09-29 Seattle, WA - Neumos
09-30 Vancouver, British Columbia - Richard's on Richards
10-01 Portland, OR - Doug Fir Lounge
10-03 San Francisco, CA - The Independent
10-04 Los Angeles, CA - Echo
10-05 Phoenix, AZ - The Clubhouse

10-09 Chicago, IL - Museum of Contemporary Art (Resfest)
10-10 New York, NY - Bowery Ballroom
10-12 New York, NY - Rothko
10-26 Valencia, Spain - Heineken Greenspace Festival
10-27 Vienna, Austria - Flex
10-28 Heidelberg, Germany - Enjoy Jazz @ Karlstorbahnhof
10-29 Huesca, Spain - Monegros Winter Festival
11-02 London, England - Scala
11-03 Sheffield, England - Dot Zero
11-04 Newcastle, England - Sage Gateshead Room 2
11-05 Liverpool, England - Chibuku at the Masque Theatre
11-10 Torino, Italy - Club to Club
11-12 Reggio Emilia, Italy - Maffia

But that's not all: On October 17, Warp will release the single for Multiply's title track, featuring mixes from Herbert, Hot Chip and Gonzales. Hot stuff.

Marah to Release Xmas Album, Non-Xmas Album, Tour
You love to hate Marah, Philadelphia's rootsy, Springsteen-doppelganging, Nick Hornby-buddying, sometimes-slobbish ensemble led by the Bielanko brothers, Dave and Serge. You couldn't stand how they aped the Boss or ladled out fame-addled braggadocio a couple years back. Weren't they moving to Japan or Leeds or something upon releasing the shinier but sullen Brit-popping Float Away with the Friday Night Gods in 2002? Those sellouts!Or you hate to love them and their drunken, Dylan-detailed lyrics, their richly-etched tales of Vietnam vets and locally colored romances, their smoke-and-Scotch soaked voices, their simmering, stargazing street-urchin sound.
Either way, who really cares? Water under the Passyunk Avenue Bridge. Somehow, Marah seemed to clean up their psychic detritus. Round about 2004, they stopped bragging and concentrated on re-focusing their self-produced noirsound. They not only founded their own label through Yep Roc (PHIdelity), but unleashed last year's unprickly, powerful 20,000 Streets Under the Sky, the urbane, urban opera their past records only alluded to.
Now, they've quickly followed that record with If You Didn't Laugh You'd Cry, a punk-folkish live-in-studio recording, due out October 18. That it packs the pungent punch of 2000's cult classic Kids in Philly with the surprising (some would say unsettling) cleanliness of Float Away makes Laugh, perhaps, the best of all Marah worlds. You can hear these songs mumbling and grumbling. Tracklist:
01 The Closer
02 The Hustle
03 City of Dreams
04 Fat Boy
05 Sooner or Later
06 Out of Tune
07 Demon of White Sadness
08 The Dishwasher's Dream
09 Poor People
10 Walt Whitman Bridge
11 The Apartment
12 The Sooner or Later Interlude
But wait, there's more! On that same October day, Marah will release A Christmas Kind of Town, their very first holiday record. This makes a lot of sense. Dave and Serge, acquainted with Philadelphian holiday customs like the drunken golden Mummers, tequila-spiked eggnog and beating up on Lit Brothers' Santas, are ripe candidates for the Christmas-time recording process. They claim, on the Yep Roc website, that they made this holiday record so as to "decorate our apartment studio with string lights and plastic snowmen and celebrate Christmas in July", as well as to "allow ‘liberal' folks to celebrate certain ‘conservative' values like family, friends, eating dinner together, roasting chestnuts and home fires burning without employing tactics like tightening borders, tax cuts for the elite, veiled racism, and Old Testament brainwashing." Ho ho ho:
01 Intro - Curtain Rises
02 Christmas Time Is Here (Featuring The Christmas Players)
03 New York Is A Christmas Kind Of Town
04 Baby It's Cold Outside (Featuring Felicia Navidad)
05 Boozing It Up With Friends (Skit)
06 Holly Jolly Christmas
07 Here We Come A Wassailing (#1)
08 Christmas Time's A Comin'
09 Let It Snow (Plastic Santa & The Eggnog Fog)
10 Quithmith Pudding (Skit)
11 Counting The Days ('Til Christmas)
12 Here We Come A Wassailing (#2)
13 Silver Bells
14 Christmas With The Snow
15 Have Yourself A Merry Little Xmas
16 Handsome Santa (Featuring Zuzu Petal)
17 Auld Lang Syne
18 Here We Come A Wassailing (#3)
19 Outro-Curtain Call
20 Counting The Days, A Christmas Polka
If you pre-order either album from the Yep Roc website, you can get limited edition color prints of original cover artwork by Dave Bielanko in glorious 11 x 14 form. And if you'd like to go wassailing up close and personal with the Bielankos and their merry men, you can catch Marah in concert at the following places and times:
10-01 Amsterdam, Holland - Take Root Festival
10-20 Baltimore, MD - Sonar
10-21 Hoboken, NJ - Maxwell's
10-22 Brooklyn, NY - Southpaw
10-23 Cambridge, MA - T.T. the Bears
10-25 Buffalo, NY - Mohawk Place
10-26 Cleveland, OH - Beachland Tavern
10-27 Chicago, IL - Abbey Pub
10-28 Milwaukee, WI - Onapa Brewing Company
10-29 Minneapolis, MN - The 400 Bar
11-02 Des Moines, IA - Vaudeville Mews
11-03 St. Louis, MO - Off Broadway
11-05 Oxford, MS - Proud Larry's

11-11 Columbus, OH - High Five
