Don Caballero Prepare Relapse Debut
When Don Caballero signed on with Relapse Records in January, Pitchfork warned them about making friends with all those metal dudes (clearly because of eardrum-blown-into-brain syndrome and all that), but apparently our advice was taken with a grain of salt, as the math-rock gods have developed a World Class Listening Problem.WCLP is the title of the band's Relapse debut, which is set to see light on May 16 in the U.S. and May 22 everywhere else. As previously reported, Don Cab spent the winter months logging time at Al Sutton's Rustbelt Studios. The record was mastered by Alan Douches (laugh it up at the surname until you see his credentials: Sufjan, Animal Collective, Mastodon, the Rapture-- the list goes on), and has words like "Goofballs" and "Fecking" in its song titles, which we appreciate.
World Class Listening Problem:
01 Mmmmm Acting. I Love Me Some Good Acting
02 Sure We Had Knives Around
03 And and and, He Lowered the Twin Down
04 I Agree.......No!.......I Disagree
05 Palm Trees In the Fecking Bahamas
06 World Class Listening Problem
07 Railroad Cancellation
08 Theme From Bricktop Clowns
09 Savage Composition
10 I'm Goofballs for Bozzo Jazz
Don Caballero have a few summer performances lined up with fellow Relapsers Zombi, and a long-awaited world tour on the way. The latter remains under wraps at the moment, but please feel free to take a look at these guys for now:

Snow Patrol Tour in Support of New LP
Owners of the Number 1 album in the UK, Snow Patrol, have got Eyes Open and transfixed squarely on us ignorant Americans. Eyes Open, the band's follow up to 2003's breakthrough Final Straw, lands in America today, May 9 via A&M/Interscope Records. Inevitably, a North American tour will follow. For the album, frontman Gary Lightbody recruited Big Star/R.E.M. helper-outer Ken Stringfellow (Lightbody + Stringfellow...has a nice ring to it, no?) as well as a choir of elite Celtic musicians. Canadian royalty Martha Wainwright stopped in to provide vocals for "Set the Fire to the Third Bar."
Tracks:
01 You're All I Have
02 Hands Open
03 Chasing Cars
04 Shut Your Eyes
05 It's Beginning to Get to Me
06 You Could Be Happy
07 Make This Go on Forever
08 Set the Fire to the Third Bar
09 Headlights on Dark Roads
10 Open Your Eyes
11 The Finish Line
Snow Patrol will start off their North American tour later this month. Meteorologically speaking, can we even have a Snow Patrol summer tour? Does this have something to do with the ice caps?

We Are Scientists Kick off Mega-Tour
Two things about We Are Scientists: They really like to tour and they are not, in fact, scientists. While the latter could be debated, the former is fully evidenced by the bountiful list of dates below. We Are Scientists' never-ending journey kicks off tonight with a quartet of dates in Japan with fellow buzz-addled post-punkers Editors. After those dates, the New York trio storm the United States with the equally dreamy Arctic Monkeys, a pairing so primed with buzz that they have to take three months off to decompress before heading to England for even more shows. If they had actually received their doctorates in science, perhaps they wouldn't have to tour so much. But, alas, that's not the case. Stay in school, kids. The more you know:

Update: The Fall Tour Becomes Slightly Less Chaotic
First things first: The Fall's current American tour is NOT canceled. I repeat: NOT canceled. Mark E. Smith and his keyboardist/wife Elena Poulou are scheduled to perform each and every show as promised, including tonight's gig at San Diego's House of Blues. However, since the rest of the band has high-tailed it back to England after much on- and off-stage drama, the Smiths will be joined by members of the Chicago band the Cairo Gang, who share the Fall's American record label, Narnack.Of course, this being the Fall, who knows what will actually happen. Perhaps by the time the tour reaches your town, the band will be Mark E. Smith and a few drunks picked up at a bar down the street.

Now, let's get back to the drama. Remember how Justin Williams, frontman for the Talk, threw a banana peel at Mark E. Smith's head in Phoenix Sunday night, resulting in the show being cut short? And see how the Talk are still on the tour? OK.***
Well, according to the Talk's label, MoRisen Records, after the frustrated Fall members left the tour, Mark E. Smith actually asked the Talk to become his new backing band! (A rep from the Fall's label, Narnack, denies this.) Guess that banana peel didn't hurt too much.
MoRisen claims that the Talk turned down Smith's offer, since they wouldn't have had enough time to learn the new songs and make the San Diego show tonight and the Pomona show tomorrow. Apparently this wasn't a problem for the Cairo Gang, though.
MoRisen also say that in the wake of the banana incident, the Talk have received death threats from rabid Fall fans around the world...and just as many supportive messages (from people chanting "USA! USA!", perhaps?).
According to Narnack, the Fall's plans to record in Los Angeles next week will proceed as scheduled, with Smith adding vocals to tracks recorded in the UK months ago, and the Cairo Gang possibly filling in on some new songs.
***UPDATE: According to MoRisen, the Talk were on their way to the San Diego show, when they were informed that they were once again off the tour. The Cairo Gang will open for all dates following the break for recording.
Reminder: Sonic Youth on "Gilmore Girls" Tonight
Yeah yeah, we know you know, because we keep telling you. But we're going to remind you again: tonight on the season finale of the WB's "Gilmore Girls", Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, along with their daughter Coco, will perform "What a Waste", from the new Sonic Youth album, Rather Ripped, due out June 13. Yo La Tengo, Sparks, Joe Pernice, and Sam Phillips will also appear. Some people think "Gilmore Girls" is the best TV show ever, and we aren't going to argue.
We're reporting this again so that we have an excuse to show you these awesome photos Thurston Moore emailed us, taken on the set of the show.
Here's Kim and Thurston with Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks, photographed by Michelle Fleischli:
And here's Coco Gordon Moore with Liza Weil, who plays Paris Geller on "Gilmore Girls":
AWWW!!!
As previously reported, Sonic Youth kick off a summer tour on June 13, the same day Rather Ripped is born. Mark Ibold, formerly of Pavement and Kim Gordon's band Free Kitten, is joining the band on bass.

Devendra Banhart Schedules Summer Tour
Have you heard about Devendra Banhart and Lindsay Lohan? WTF, right? The paparazzi will have plenty of opportunity to stalk the happy (and probably imaginary) couple this summer, as Banhart has quite a slate of shows scheduled, taking place all over the world. Before trekking to such exotic locations as Russia, Israel, and Tennessee, Devendra curates a day of the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival this weekend. He'll pay a visit to the May 22 Os Mutantes show in London and then co-headline a U.S. mini-tour with Magic Numbers, leading up to Bonnaroo.
And need we point out the magical coinky-dink that both Os Mutantes and Devendra are playing our own Pitchfork Music Festival?
In between all the multi-continental concert-hopping, Devendra will show his latest batch of drawings at Galleria Emilio Mazzoli in Modena, Italy, starting June 24.

The Pipettes Reveal Debut Album Details
Maybe you haven't noticed, but Pitchfork has been acting kinda funny lately. We're all distracted and stuff, unable to concentrate on most day-to-day tasks. It's getting harder to hold a conversation with us, what with all the staring out the window and giggling at nothing in particular.Sorry about that. It's just that we've fallen in love. With the Pipettes, three adorable British lasses in polka-dot dresses singing about kissing and dancing and other, slightly more naughty, activities. They're the best thing to come out of the current girl group revival, and we can't stop raving about them.
At last, Gwenno, Rose, and Becki are returning our affections, sort of. On July 17, Memphis Industries will release the group's debut album, We Are the Pipettes, in the UK. It's due out August 14 in Germany, France, and Scandinavia; alas, no American release is planned just yet. The LP contains such gems as "Dirty Mind", "Your Kisses Are Wasted on Me", and my favorite song of the year so far, "Pull Shapes".

02 Pull Shapes
03 Why Did You Stay?

The Fall Tour Descends Into Chaos
"The Fall Tour Descends Into Chaos"...well, duh. Is Mark E. Smith capable of doing anything that doesn't descend into chaos? I feel like he goes to brush his teeth in the morning, and the next thing you know, the sink is shattered, wild dogs are tearing up the bathtub, and there's toothpaste and blood all over the place. The Fall's current American tour, which kicked off on May 2, has been no different, although there doesn't seem to have been any toothpaste involved. Last night's show at the Brick House in Phoenix was cut short when Justin Williams, frontman for the tour's opening act, the Talk, threw a banana peel at Smith's head. A banana peel! That's gotta hurt.
According to Williams, the peel-throwing was the culmination of days of frustration with Smith. In a MySpace bulletin entitled "FUCK MARK E. SMITH HE SUCKS," Williams wrote: "MARK E. SMITH a.k.a MR. BURNS has managed to piss off his band so bad they quit and left him in america with his crazy wife slash one fingered keyboard player... MARK pulled a corkscrew on his bass player poured beer and ashed on the head of his tour manager while driving (who has also quit the tour) and played only one full set without slithering off stage to his R.V. to dive into a bottle of scotch."
(The Fall's booking agent confirmed that the tour manager had quit, but countered that Smith had indeed played full sets at all of the trek's three previous shows.)
Williams continued, "the man is in his late 40's and looks older than my dead grandfather i'm sorry to those out there who are fall fans but you do not know this guy he is an idiot the three other members of the fall are great guys nice as can be and i wish the best for them..."
As far as the incident in Phoenix, Williams wrote, "i was told by the falls tour manager he and the rest of the band were going home without mark knowing and this would be the last show this really pissed me off BAD!!! if this had happened a few years ago i would have beat the shit out of him but i'm older now so i picked up a dirty banana peel ran onto the stage and threw it in his face as hard as i could and walked away he ran after me with some 1800's English boxing hands and wanted to fight i laughed and walked away knowing in my head this man has only a few years left..."
Pitchfork reader Jeff Moore, who attended the show, wrote in to say that Smith returned to the stage a few minutes later. "Mr. Smith distractedly continued the set while removing bits of flung matter from his hair, several times smirking. After several half-hearted attempts to reassert his trademark amp-twiddling, mic-disdaining stage persona, he approached [wife Elena] Poulou at the keyboard. After a brief discussion, the two left the stage, once again leaving bass, guitar, and drums to finish the song in a vocal vacuum. At the close of the song, they too stoically filed offstage."
"Several minutes later Ms. Poulou returned to the stage to announce that the Fall would be unable to continue the show. Her brief announcement was cut from the 'we were not shown the respect that we deserve' mold, which was not well received by audience members since the assault came not from members of the crowd, but from the opening band. She also referenced technical difficulties early in the set before telling the crowd "'I'm sorry' and vacating the empty stage to a chorus of booing and chants of 'USA, USA'."
"USA, USA"??!! WTF? Is this a punk show or a NASCAR rally? Reader Bill Smith added that the crowd also yelled "Down with the British!" Come on, people, what's wrong with you?!
Williams offered an apology: "p.s. sorry to everyone in phoenix i threw a banana at mark during the show i know you payed good money to see that shit but if it was not for us talking the rest of the band to come to phoenix they would not have even showed up so be lucky you even got that much do not be mad at us be mad at MARK E. SMITH he does not care if you were there or not he does not care about his fans trust me i know first hand"
The Fall's official website said only, "Apologies to all for the curtailed set, caused by technical problems." I guess bananas do technically count as technology...if you're a monkey.
As of right now, the fate of the rest of the tour is obviously in doubt. But we'll keep you posted about what's going on-- whether it's another fight, more fruit projectiles, or just plain old drunken craziness.

Glenn Kotche Talks New Wilco Record
Wilco's next album is still shrouded in quite a bit of secrecy, but we received a small peek behind the curtain recently, when Pitchfork caught up with drummer Glenn Kotche. He's busy promoting his new solo album, Mobile, which dropped via Nonesuch in March; as announced on Friday, he'll perform at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago's Union Park on July 30.For the time being, Wilco remain in the writing and demoing stages of the recording process, utilizing their Chicago loft to do so. As reported by Billboard.com last month, new tracks "On and On and On", "Walken", and the tentatively titled "Either Way", along with one or two others, have made their way into the band's live set. "I think anyone who's heard them can see stylistically that it's pretty much all over the place right now," Kotche told Pitchfork.
"I'm kind of happy right now that we're not trying to affix any sort of concept to the record," he continued. "We're not saying, 'Oh, it's going to be this type of record or this type of record.' We're just getting together. We set up in a circle and come up with ideas. Some of them are songs Jeff has fleshed out, some of them are completely written on the spot. Someone plays a riff, and it goes from there.
"At this point, I just think we're making songs, crafting songs that we like and stylistically kind of letting the record shape itself instead of forcing a mold upon it... We're more going to keep this one about the songs instead of trying to make a statement with the record."
The goal is to forge on until Wilco have completed 30 or so songs, at which point they'll whittle that number down to fit the album. In the meantime, fans might be able to hear a new tune or two on the group's upcoming North American tour. The trek kicks off in Calgary in late June and wraps up in early August.

First Two Manitoba/Caribou Albums to Be Reissued
Dan Snaith is a badass. He has a Ph.D. in mathematics,
he continues to snarkily refer to Handsome Dick Manitoba (aka the man who made
him change his recording/performing name from Manitoba to Caribou) as an
“ageing punk rocker” on his MySpace page, and he was the talk of the
blogosphere with the skewering he gave President Bush at the White House
Correspondents Dinner last week.
Okay, that last one is Stephen Colbert, but those two probably hang out as members of some sort of club for maverick entertainers with enormous internet fanbases, so it's an honest mistake.
The psychedelic/electronic/krautrock mastermind is such a badass, in fact, that the only thing he'll tell us about the new album he's recording is that he's "returned to the studio" and that he is so "busy recording" that his already-passed live shows in France last month would be two of the "few chances to see [him] play this year" (from his MySpace page and official website, respectively). Looks like there won't be any Snaiths on a plane this summer after all.
Dr. Snaith is more forthcoming, however, about the reissue treatment his first two records (as Manitoba) are getting. On June 20, Domino Records will re-release both 2001's Start Breaking My Heart and 2003's Up in Flames, Pitchfork's fifth favorite album of 2003, with bonus discs devoted to singles, remixes, and videos. These deluxe reissue packages will put the Caribou name where Manitoba once was, so we can all just forget about this whole business and focus on what's really important: Canada.

The Stills and Rogue Wave Tour Together
Having successfully capsized the mighty ship Poseidon, leaving Kurt Russell, that chick from "The Real World", and Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas in their wake, Rogue Wave are celebrating by heading out on the road. In June, they'll splash across the country with the Stills, who aren't the villains in any summer blockbusters that we know of (although the CSNY reunion could probably make for quite a disaster flick.)The Philadelphia stop on the tour is a veritable Monsters of Indie extravaganza, featuring Yo La Tengo, the Shins, and Band of Horses. It'll be the most exciting thing to happen to Philly since Live 8. (I kid because I love.)
