Infinite Mixtape #32: Grizzly Bear: "Lullabye"
What starts as a simple acoustic, glockenspiel-tinged "lullabye" quietly blossoms into a lush, shimmery, reverb-festooned paean to the rising sun rolling over the hills in the countryside-- or at least over the array of rooftop air-conditioners outside your window. On the second track from their forthcoming Yellow House (September 5, Warp Records), Grizzly Bear stack layered vocals and tiny melodies skyscraper high, chanting "Chin up, cheer up, chin up, cheer up, chin up" over an ascending bassline. It all comes together sounding majestic, slightly hallucinogenic, and appropriately uplifting, an ideal tune to kick off an auspicious day-- or a mixtape.
