Infinite Mixtape #35: Califone: "The Orchids"

Infinite Mixtape #35: Califone: "The Orchids" I once met the Califone equivalent of a Dead Head, an outspoken gal who worked overtime for a few months so she could spend the rest of the year chasing the Tim Rutili-led act around the country in a van with her dog. It's songs like this one, from the forthcoming Roots & Crowns (due out October 10 via Thrill Jockey), that I imagine inspire that kind of devotion. The band's take on Psychic TV's "The Orchids" evokes a steadily tumbling stream, each Rutili vocal rumination cascading over the one before, glistening sustain above and a vibrant bed of looped guitars beneath. With each listen, the song leaves a deeper impression, unchanged and yet entirely new. It all feels sublimely natural, a tiny excerpt from some great, divine composition-- or a neverending moment on an infinite mixtape.
