TV on the Radio Explain Themselves Again

Yesterday, we featured a stream of TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe explaining what the hell is going on in that video with the little kid playing the President and graffiti-ing TVOTR's logo on city streets. Now, here he is explaing what the hell is going on in that video with the little kid playing the President and firing everybody.

MP3: Portishead Debut Previously Unheard Tracks

Well, after a nearly decade-long absence, it would appear that Bristol-based trip-hop legends Portishead are back on the spot. The trio resurfaced briefly in February of 2005 at Bristol's Tsunami Benefit Concert, where they performed live for the first time in seven years. But, after alluding to a forthcoming album, the band vanished once again.

Now, having broken their studio silence earlier this year with a cover of Serge Gainsbourg's "Requiem for Anna" on an album tribute to the late lascivious Frenchman, Portishead seem fully prepared to re-embrace the limelight: Their newly created MySpace page offers two previously unheard instrumental tracks, providing fans with the first original Portishead compositions since the band's 1998 self-titled sophomore album.

Portishead's Geoff Barrow is quick to state that the material is not exactly "new," calling the tracks "doodles from about 3 years ago." Nonetheless, at this point their fans seem hungry for any material not yet heard from the band, and these new tracks-- one of which, "Key Bored 299 03", is being offered for free download-- should tide them over for at least a minute.

As for the status of the forthcoming as-yet-untitled third studio album, Barrow states, "We are in the studio with tunes done but it's unlikley that we will post any new stuff just yet. We are working everyday to finish it."

Infinite Mixtape #35: Califone: "The Orchids"

Califone I once met the Califone equivalent of a Dead Head, an outspoken gal who worked overtime for a few months so she could spend the rest of the year chasing the Tim Rutili-led act around the country in a van with her dog. It's songs like this one, from the forthcoming Roots & Crowns (due out October 10 via Thrill Jockey), that I imagine inspire that kind of devotion. The band's take on Psychic TV's "The Orchids" evokes a steadily tumbling stream, each Rutili vocal rumination cascading over the one before, glistening sustain above and a vibrant bed of looped guitars beneath. With each listen, the song leaves a deeper impression, unchanged and yet entirely new. It all feels sublimely natural, a tiny excerpt from some great, divine composition-- or a neverending moment on an infinite mixtape.

Junior Boys Kick Off Tour

So this is a tour. Junior Boys, whose So This Is Goodbye we kind of like (and which comes out September 12 on Domino Records), begin their previously reported tour tonight in Montreal with Cat Power/Lou Barlow collaborator Ensemble (aka Olivier Alary). The latter's self-titled debut comes out September 19 on FatCat.

After finishing the tour's North American leg at Chicago's Empty Bottle on October 8, the Boys will head over to the UK for some shows with Hot Chip. Electro-pop-o-riffic! [MORE...]

Daft Punk, Duran Duran Head Bang! Festival

Festival season is in full effect right now, but one recently announced event just picked up the golden ticket more commonly known as Daft Punk. The Parisian duo will join newly added acts Duran Duran, Common, Tiësto, Thievery Corporation, the previously announced Modest Mouse, Gnarls Barkley, and more for the annual Bang! Music Festival in Miami, Florida.

We hope they bring the pyramid, but even more than that, we hope this blossoms into a full tour.

The day-long party is scheduled to go down on Saturday, November 11 at the city's Bicentennial Park. A full lineup is still in the works. [MORE...]

Xiu Xiu

So last week we scooped you on the latest news from camp Xiu, including new albums, new videos, new tour dates, and about 62 side projects and collaborations. For a fun and enumerated list, consult said scoop here.

All caught up? Good, 'cause your Xiu-lovin' pals at Pitchfork have just talked to Jamie Stewart, who was kind enough to share a little more information about the forthcoming Xiu Xiu remixes/covers disc, new band member Ches Smith, the lasting effects of horror movies, and more.

But first! Check out the video for "Bishop, CA", one of four vids from Xiu Xiu's forthcoming The Air Force (due September 12 via 5RC). Directed by XX tour manager David Horvitz, the clip features, according to Jamie, "Super 8 [film footage] that [Horvitz] shot when he was in Israel recently, and Super 8 footage of his family that he found in a box in the closet." The results are appropriately eerie; view it by clicking on our exclusive download here. [MORE...]

Exclusive: Stills to Take on North America

What does a bird have in common with Montreal's favorite un-feathered quintet? Both are fans of migration! This fall, the Stills will take off across North America in support of May's Vice release, Without Feathers. The group will play alongside Kings of Leon and Land of Talk, while still making room for a handful of scattered headlining performances. The trek kicks off early next month with a stint at the Stills' hometown Osheaga Music and Arts Festival. [MORE...]

Castanets and Jana Hunter Tour by Sailboat

Castanets Not to be outdone by the Ditty Bops and their recent cross-country bicycle tour, neo-folky notables Castanets and Jana Hunter have joined up with Austin's Peter and the Wolf to tour the great American Northeast-- via sailboat. This whale of a tour gimmick embarked this past weekend from New York City on a three-week, five-gig voyage with trusty skipper OCDJ (former disc jockey for NYC's WFMU) manning the rig. There's a joke in there someplace about a Hunter, a Wolf, a DJ, and some Castanets in a boat, but we're not going to embarrass ourselves trying to invent it. [MORE...]

The Raconteurs to Tour With Bob Dylan

Well I'll be-- Jack White's Raconteurs are racking up some big time opportunities. As previously reported, the group will play the Vegoose Festival on Halloween weekend and "host" MTV's VMAs a week from today...but that doesn't mean we saw their recently announced tour dates with Bob Dylan coming. Last thing we heard, dude was hating on all contemporary music.

But next thing we know, the Raconteurs have tacked on a handful of November tour dates alongside Dylan, who, of course, has a record, Modern Times, on its way via Columbia come August 29.

Prior to kicking things off with the Raconteurs, however, Dylan will spend close to a month on the road with Kings of Leon and the Foo Fighters trading off on support duties. [MORE...]

Revealed: White Stripes on "The Simpsons"

MTV.com has uncovered an image of the White Stripes on the September 17 episode of "The Simpsons". As you can see, the animators chose to depict mustachioed, late-period Jack, rather than early, baby fat Jack. But he's still pretty cute.
