Stream: Pharoahe Monch: "Push"

Tower of Power is featured on this first single from Pharoahe Monch's eventually-forthcoming Desire on SRC Records, and they help make "Push" an effective throwback to 70s funk. Monch & co. aren't really saying much, and what little actual rapping does happen appears at the very end. "Push" feels like it could be two or three times longer, and that's either a testament to an engaging groove or a sign of some half-baked ideas behind it. Sure, this is the radio edit, but you don't want your single to be shorter than one of Justin Timberlake's interludes.

While Desire is busy getting stuck in Hip Hop Album Purgatory, Monch will play two shows in the state of New York in November, including a date at Vassar College with Lupe Fiasco. 50 bucks says someone utters the phrase "This one's for the ladies."

Dates:

11-03 Poughkeepsie, NY - Vassar College *
11-04 Buffalo, NY - Town Ballroom #

* with Lupe Fiasco
# with Big Daddy Kane, DJ Maseo
