Photos: Joanna Newsom [Grass Valley, CA; 05/27/07]

Photos by Caitlin Loper

Joanna Newsom joined Hella's Aaron Ross this past weekend for a benefit concert at St. Joseph's Cultural Center in Grass Valley, California. The beneficiary of this benefit show? Why, the venue itself.

St. Joseph's traces its roots back to a Gold Rush-era Catholic orphanage, and since the 1970s it's been a state-protected historic landmark, providing space for weddings, receptions, and of course, concerts. Although its historic status provides the center with some state funding, the Governator has yet to cough up the $150,000 needed to repair the chapel's crumbling centerpiece, a 110-year-old stained glass window.

The humble harpist serenaded the docile crowd of do-gooders, and ticket proceeds supported the aging community center. Miss Newsom has one remaining date scheduled so far this year: she'll perform at London's Royal Albert Hall on September 28.

Photos: Frog Eyes [Chicago, IL; 05/27/07]

Ever hop under the covers on a particularly chilly night and just let loose one hell of a wiggle, your own little cathartic ode to the warmth that has until that moment eluded you? My theory is this is what Carey Mercer's doing each night on stage with every yelp and grimace, at least 75% of the time (the other 25% he's catching his breath, see).

Perhaps this also goes some to explain the Frog Eyes frontman's especially jovial mood between songs at this Schubas gig, where he and band (no Spencer Krug this time out) treated a boisterous crowd to selections from this year's Tears of the Valedictorian. Banter topics touched upon included: Tom Tom Club, Yoo-hoo ("the chocolate drink, you know?"), and (facetiously) Mercer's burgeoning side career as an improv poet.

Frog Eyes brave Fargo tonight before sweeping back to their Canadian homeland to wrap up this latest tour.

Beirut Issues New "Elephant Gun" Single
What follows is the least depressing story you'll read about Beirut anytime soon

Like a college junior fresh off a semester abroad in Prague, Beirut's Zach Condon continues to relish his Euro fetish. Not only is the Balkan-inspired tunesmith scheduled to make a trek across the pond for a string of summer dates, but he'll issue the UK-only 7" for the Lon Gisland EP's leadoff track "Elephant Gun" June 25 on 4AD. And it features a take on Jacques Brel's "Le Moribond" on the B-side. (Makes sense-- Condon was big-upping Brel in our recent interview with him.)

Could the other trappings of a Euro-fixation-- a Union Jack flag above the bed, a parade of Oasis records, and an inexplicable fascination with Stella Artois-- be next for Young Master Condon?

Busy at the helm of his upcoming LP The Flying Club Cup, Mr. Condon is letting up a bit on the constant touring that left him winded last spring, with only a few U.S. dates-- all, presently, attached to the Wordless Music Series-- on the docket for September. [MORE...]

The Shins Extend World Tour

Since the release of Wincing the Night Away earlier this year, the Shins have made their name practically synonymous with touring, as in "I think what our band really needs is to go on the Shins to support our album" or "This the Shins would be much better if we had a competent the Shins manager to make sure we got paid." It's a freaking epidemic.

The Shins' newly announced the Shins includes its share of summer festival dates, but even more prominently featured is their slab of Australian shows in August. Wanna guess what song will get the loudest cheers at those gigs?

The the Shins kicks off July 29 at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. [MORE...]

Man Man Set Eyes on Summer Tour
Strong enough for a Man Man, ph-balanced for a werewolf

With combs for their curiously unironic moustache-moustache-moustaches, sweatbands aplenty, and a fresh change of white-hued everything in tow, the vegan diners, swimwear models, partners in discovery, and mouse trappers of Man Man hit the road for a smattering of live shows this June and July.

Unfortunately, three of the gigs are sponsored by Camel cigarettes. Tickets may be free, but you're paying with your SOUL.

The Philly-borne odd sods-- having just wrapped a stint perplexing 11-year-old "Dashboard" fans and their well-intentioned adult chaperones alike-- will hopefully fill in the rest of their time cranking out the follow-up to last year's wicked Six Demon Bag. [MORE...]

Arctic Monkeys Bundle Japan Bonus Tracks on 7"
Plus: "Fluorescent Adolescent" single due in July

Love those Arctic Monkeys but loathe shelling out the megabucks for bonus-track-bolstered Japanese import versions of their albums? Your favourite Monkeys have you covered, by way of a special edition white label 7" arriving June 18 overseas.

The white label includes two bonus tracks from the Nippon edition of Favourite Worst Nightmare, "Matador" and "Da Frame 2r". Being a white label pressing, it's not technically affiliated with any label, although a limited number of copies will be available at the Domino webstore.

The Arctics follow up this 7" with their next proper single, "Fluorescent Adolescent", on July 9. They've also tacked on a handful of European engagements since our last report, and enlisted the Coral to open their non-fest dates. [MORE...]

TV on the Radio to Release "Province" Single

After the blast of awesome that was Return to Cookie Mountain, TV on the Radio seem content to keep the release of new music to a trickle (see: their Live at Amoeba Music EP, their contribution to Adult Swim's Warm & Scratchy compilation).

The trickle continues (for UK residents at least) on July 2, when the band will release Cookie Mountain highlight (and David Bowie vocal assist) "Province" as a 7" single, backed by non-album track "Dumb Animal" as the B-side. 4AD Records will put out the vinyl.

TVOTR will stay in the spotlight this summer with a cool handful of festival dates, the first of which is in Norway on June 28.

Thanks to reader John Spaziano for the tip. [MORE...]

[George, WA; 05/27/07]

Photos by Nilina Mason-Campbell

No Bigfoot sightings (as far as we know), but plenty of big bands afoot at the 2007 installment of the Sasquatch! Music Festival, which went down this past Memorial Day weekend in George, Washington. Sunglasses were all the rage as fest vets such as Björk, Arcade Fire, Interpol, Beastie Boys, Spoon, Patrick Wolf, Electrelane (including former Pitchfork contributor Mia Lily Clarke), and Grizzly Bear brought their fan-favorite fare to George's Gorge Amphitheatre. This year's gathering wasn't without snags: M.I.A. canceled last week and the Polyphonic Spree and others had sets cut short due to dangerous high winds.

Mars Volta's Rodriguez-Lopez Lets Loose Bufalo

Whereas most folks wandering around Amsterdam limit their prolificacy to the number of brownies they can cram into their mouths, Mars Volta guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez's year in the Netherlands resulted in four full-length albums.

One such platter, Se Dice Bisonte, No Bufalo, will see the light of day May 29 from Gold Standard Laboratories. The disc, a mostly-instrumental jam-fest featuring a few Volta members and Money Mark Ramos-Nishita, also sports the Volta's live fave "Rapid Fire Tollbooth" and a spin on "Please Heat This Eventually" from the EP of the same name, sans the pipes of Can vocalist Damo Suzuki.
