M83 Issues Digital Shades, Works on New LP
Anthony Gonzalez of French shoelookers M83, with the help of Before the Dawn Heals Us co-producer Antoine Gallet, has gathered a number of home recordings and Eno-inspired ambience for a collection he's calling Digital Shades vol. 1. The accumulation of hazy sounds might not seem far off from your average M83 record, but Gonzalez' insistence on making measured moves in the studio and working at his own pace lend Digital Shades its gauzy, experimental vibe.
The Digital Shades project predicates another, perhaps more exciting M83 tidbit: Anthony cobbled the Digital Shades material together while in the studio working out on new, proper M83 album for release in January. Digital Shades will be released digitally September 3 on Gooom/EMI, and on CD and vinyl in France around the same time.
Thanks to Brad Honer for the heads up.
M83 also contributed new music to the HBO Voyeur Project. (Carlos D, Clint Mansell, and made some music for it, too.) You can download the pieces "Une Nuit Pour Nous" and "Je Doute et Je Crie" for free from iTunes now.
Little Ones Play Gigs With Voxtrot, Kaiser Chiefs, 1990s
Despite their diminutive name, L.A.'s the Little Ones have one big tour planned, with dates stretching until the end of time (read: December). The Little Ones' next gig goes down July 28 in Anaheim, where they'll open for Pinback. They will eventually share the marquee with quite a few others of note as well: Voxtrot, the Magic Numbers, 1990s, Kaiser Chiefs, and We Are Scientists. [MORE...]
Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's a Reissue
On October 29, Virgin Records will reissue the Sex Pistols classic Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols on vinyl, according to Billboard.com. It comes packaged with a poster and the one-sided 7" for "Submission". The reissue is meant to deliver the LP to fans just as it was when it was originally released back on October 29, 1977. Hey, that was exactly 30 years ago! Clever, clever. As it was originally intended, your CD copy of Bollocks sticks "Submission" right smack in the middle of "Anarchy in the UK" and "Pretty Vacant". Billboard.com reports that the track was originally left off the first 50,000 copies of the LP, and was included as an insert, just like the reissue.
Their four classic singles "Anarchy in the U.K.", "God Save the Queen", Pretty Vacant", and "Holidays in the Sun" will also be reissued throughout October as seven inches, with their original artwork and B-sides. [MORE...]
Kings of Leon Tour With Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Go ahead and try to tell them apart in that picture
U.S. rokk heads: welcome to your Ozzfest. Sure, it's only two bands, but a Kings of Leon/Black Rebel Motorcycle Club tour is sure to be almost as full of guitars, beards, and black clothing as Ozzy's labor of love. The RCA labelmates will hit the road together in September for a month and a half of shows, and they have quite a few dates separately as well. BRMC's tour continues tonight (July 27) in Östersund, Sweden, and the Kings pick up again in Minneapolis on August 2.
Both bands' new records, BRMC's Baby 81 and Kings of Leon's Because of the Times, are out now. [MORE...]
Working for a Nuclear Free City Coming to America
Manchester quartet Working for a Nuclear Free City will release their first Stateside album, Businessmen & Ghosts, on October 16 via Deaf Dumb + Blind, U.S. home to kindred spirits Fujiya & Miyagi. The record is a WFANFC history of sorts, featuring their self-titled UK debut LP and follow-up EP Rocket in their entireties alongside a selection of rare and previously unreleased tracks. The collection comes on two discs, one called Businessmen and one called Ghosts.
The band also have a handful of dates in their home country over the next few months. Their next show is in Manchester on August 1. [MORE...]
Fender Makes Mascis Guitar, Dinosaur Jr. Add Dates
Front page photo by Brantley GutierrezThe reemergence of J. Mascis as a high-profile indie guitar hero has been perhaps the best bit of the recent Dinosaur Jr. reunion. Not only does J chew up and spit out Beyond, he tears it up in the new Kevin Drew video, on the Thurston Moore record, and, now, on his very own guitar from Fender.
The sparkly purple J Mascis Fender Jazzmaster guitar should prove the perfect axe for bending that high E, and the violet hue really brings out the highlights in an untamed mane of gray hair. These bad boys are going for a little more than $800 on eBay at the moment, though that's still far less than the average price of a John Mayer Strat.
You can see J and his Jazzmaster on Dinosaur Jr.'s ever-expanding tour, which finds them tackling both U.S. coasts (and precious little in between) after their Stateside return in September.
Thanks to reader Zachary Boyd Smith-- who e-mailed to let us know that "that guitar is so beautiful it makes me tear up"-- for the tip. [MORE...]
Franz, Liars, TVOTR, Byrne Set Shrigley Lyrics to Music
So do Grizzly Bear, Hot Chip, Deerhoof, Final Fantasy, Islands, YACHT
Visual artist and writer David Shrigley (who you might know from his Deerhoof album covers and Blur and Bonnie "Prince" Billy videos) has rounded up a boatload of great artists to play Brian Wilson to his Van Dyke Parks for the forthcoming 39-song compilation Worried Noodles.
In 2005, Tomlab issued Worried Noodles (The Empty Sleeve), an LP-shaped book of lyrics. Now, those lyrics have been set to music and turned into full-fledged songs by the likes of Franz Ferdinand, David Byrne, TV on the Radio, Grizzly Bear, Liars, Hot Chip, Deerhoof, Final Fantasy, Mt. Eerie, Islands, Phil Elvrum, Aidan Moffat, Trans Am, Dirty Projectors, Max Tundra, Scout Niblett, Tussle, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, and YACHT. (You might remember us mentioning the Niblett/Shirgley connection in our last news story about her.)
Tomlab
will release Worried Noodles on October 23 as a two-CD set along with a 104-page hardcover book with lyrics and black & white illustrations. There will also be a three-disc vinyl version of the comp without the book. [MORE...]
Win a Date With the Wu-Tang Clan!
Nah, it's not the blueberry blunt talking back; this shit is real.
From now until August 20, Wu-Tang Clan honcho RZA, in partnership with rap instrumental download emporium/social networking site LOUD.com, is offering fans the chance to rhyme over fresh tracks from Bobby Digital himself. And, if RZA and LOUD like what they hear, you might be on your way to Hawaii to open for the Wu-Tang at their September 1 spot on the Rock the Bells tour.
Aspiring MCs (or, hell, Lil Wayne if he's bored) can access the brand-new RZA beats from LOUD.com, where they're available for free download (PC-only, sorry) if you sign up. After spitting hot fire and submitting the results to the site, LOUD.com will whittle down the finalists to ten. RZA will then select the winner, to be announced August 27. Mic skills are helpful, but not a prerequisite (see: every Cappadonna verse ever).
Just remember: very few words effectively rhyme with "Shaolin", and retrofitting Wu-Tang slang into your own well-honed flow is, as a genius once said, "mad fuckin' dangerous."
In other Wu-Tang news, Raekwon's posse record Raekwon Presents...Ice Water: Polluted Water drops August 28 on Babygrande, while the Wu will reform like Voltron for 8 Diagrams, slated for an October release on SRC Records. In the meantime, the Wu is out rocking the bells for the rest of the summer, with a few assorted stops elsewhere. [MORE...]
Metric Tours, Spawns Bang Lime
There's a flurry of activity from the Metric camp of late: a new EP front their frontlady, a forthcoming (albeit brief) tour, and-- surprise surprise-- another side project.
First, old business: Metric's full-length debut, Grow Up and Blow Away, was recently reissued by Last Gang Records. Then, something new: Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton's What is Free to a Good Home? EP dropped earlier this week. There's also Bang Lime, the side project from Metric's rhythm section, bassist Josh Winstead and drummer Joules Scott-Key. Their debut album, Best Friends in Love, is out August 14 on Last Gang.
Oh, and lest we forget, Emily's just one of the top-notch guests on the forthcoming Les Favy Fav LP. She also helped put together a collection of work by her father, poet Paul Haines, titled Secret Carnival Workers. It will be out this fall from Coach House Books.
After Bang Lime's North American tour wraps next month, Metric proper will cover a few kilometers through the first bit of October. [MORE...]
More Lidell/Beck Collaboration Details Revealed
Jamie Lidell photo by Jason Bergman
More information regarding the Beck/Jamie Lidell direct-to-disc recording session has surfaced, and though the details of the material's release (previously reported as a series of singles) are still up in the air, we now have an idea of how it will sound when (and if) it does come out.
According to a representative of the Infrasonic studio where the sessions took place, "engineers Pete Lyman and Jeff Ehrenberg both agree that Beck's material had a Sea Change feel to it: acoustically driven, with undertones of traditional folk and Americana. The songs that Lidell worked on, however, were really on the other end of the spectrum, with a post-punk/new wave feel. The production of those songs had a darker tone, similar to Joy Division. As Pete and Jeff both said, Lidell's work was 'Suicide meets Silver Apples,' with a really great marriage of synth and vocals."
So Lidell was a little out there? We expected nothing less. However, it seems his contributions were weirder not only in content but also in approach: "He contributed vocals and instrumentation to the sessions, or, as Pete said, 'vocals and shouting,' drum machines, and a great variety of vintage keyboards. Lidell executed some really incredible vocal techniques. He would intentionally shout into the space in order to capture that larger sound and at times was walking and running throughout the room shouting into every single mic available."
Jamie, we miss you already.
Finally, Beck was not in the studio on the first day of recording (alt rock stars!), which gave Lidell a chance to record a soul track of his own. And as much as we love his bonkers side, it's very good to hear he can still tap into his straightforward side as well.
Dan Deacon Adds to Girl Talk Tour, Releases Single
Also adds quite a few dates to his own tour, thank you very much
The Dan Deacon Touring Machine (patent pending) doesn't look to run out of steam anytime soon, seeing as the goofy Baltimore party-starter has recently added a few dates to his previously reported tour with Girl Talk (attendees: please step your Ritalin game up) and even more solo shows. The biggest addition to Deacon's tour comes in the form of a European leg in August, though his next show is still the August 5 appearance at the Virgin Festival in his hometown.
Carpark Records will release Spiderman of the Rings cut "The Crystal Cat" as a limited edition seven-inch single on August 14, with the charmingly titled "Totally Boner Eat Shit" as its B-side. The label also makes a passing reference to the fact that Deacon is already planning "a new CD and DVD" follow-up(s?) to Spiderman for release next year. [MORE...]
Final Fantasy Announces Fall Tour
Cadence Weapon to open a bunch of shows
Make Owen a pallet on your floor; the violin virtuoso at the heart of Final Fantasy is setting off on a proper fall tour. It will find him looping around North America in October and November, after an impressive run at this weekend's Calgary Folk Festival and a couple weeks in Europe.
Still no word yet on Owen's purportedly forthcoming LP Heartland, but kicking off one's American tour in North Manchester, Indiana is probably good inspiration for anything with that title.
UPDATE: WE HAVE JUST BEEN INFORMED BY PALLET'S AGENT THAT THAT THE FIREHOUSE, THE VENUE AT WHICH THIS SHOW WAS TO TAKE PLACE, "GOT FLOODED AND CRUSHED LAST NIGHT!" SO, UH, THAT SHOW ISN'T HAPPENING.
ALSO, A GOOD PORTION OF THE TOUR IS A CO-HEADLINING TREK WITH CADENCE WEAPON!
In other Final Fantasy news, Owen shows up a couple times on Immaculate Machine's Fables LP. [MORE...]
