Joanna Newsom Unveils Orchestral U.S. Tour
Everybody else is doing it, so why can't she?

Last fall, when the ethereal Joanna Newsom toured the UK in support of Ys, she was accompanied by full orchestras. Now, finally, America will get to experience the grandeur, as Newsom has scheduled four U.S. orchestral shows this October and November. Details about the specifics of the shows are scant; right now, all we know is that 28 instrumentalists will accompany her at the Los Angeles date at the Walt Disney Concert Hall on November 9.

Joanna and the Ys Street Band hit Europe in August and September, before gearing up for the orchestral undertaking. [MORE...]

Sally Shapiro's Romance Comes to North America

Ultra-lite Swedish discopop chanteuse Sally Shapiro's debut Disco Romance-- which, by the by, carries the distinction as the first Best New Music induction of 2007 (following its late 2006 release overseas on Diskokaine-- got us through the winter, but didn't get us into North American record stores, where it's only been available as an import.

But say goodbye to exorbitant shipping rates and hello to gooey auditory bliss, as Disco Romance, in a slightly altered form, will crash North America shores at last October 30, thanks to Paper Bag Records. The new version of Romance features three brand new tracks-- "Skating in the Moonshine", "He Keeps Me Alive", and "Jackie Jackie (Spend This Winter With Me)"-- as well as an extended version of "I'll Be by Your Side".

That whole "refuses to perform live" thing seems to still be Sally's bag, as she has no tour dates at the moment. Still, this ain't music for crowds; Disco Romance was made for one or two. [MORE...]

Devendra Announces Thunder Canyon Tracklist
"Shabop Shalom"!

The delightfully bent Devendra Banhart has slipped us the tracklist to his forthcoming opus Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon, and, despite the decidedly frowny feeling one gets from the absence of both "Hubba Hubba Planet" and "Electric Pizza Cops", it's still rather Devendran in its manner. Take, for example, "Tonada Yanominista", or "Shabop Shalom"; a little odd, I suppose, but it seems Devendra's letting the musical weirdness trump the bizarre nomenclature.

Speaking of which, at 6 PM PDST today (Friday), Devendra will be streaming two tunes from Smokey on his MySpace. That'll be the first crack you get at Smokey, nearly two months before its September 25 release on XL. UPDATE: "Tonada Yanomaminista" and "Rosa" are up now!!!

In other Devendra news, his contribution to that Janet Reno CD drops a week before Thunder Canyon, and he's got a tour afoot. Dates after the tracklist. [MORE...]

!!! Team Up With the Field for Fall Tour

Taking a page out of the books of the recently announced Arcade Fire/LCD Soundsystem and Girl Talk/Dan Deacon tours, !!! and the Field will leave no North American dance floor safe on their own just-announced tour this fall.

Myths will be taken. Show-goers will Go Sublime. Other things involving poorly conceived puns on both acts' album titles will happen. So yeah, expect a good time.

The collaborative tour begins September 26 in L.A., but both have dates before then as well. [MORE...]

Minus the Bear Get Laser Light Show, Tour With Subtle
Duuuude, lasers!

Following a series of in-store appearances and a festival appearance, Seattle-based math machines Minus the Bear will throw themselves into a fall tour. But first...it seems the Bears are about to become beacons of light: On August 21, Seattle's Pacific Science Center will put on a laser show set to tracks from Minus the Bear's forthcoming Planet of Ice (still out the very same day from Suicide Squeeze). Minus the Bear laser light show! Just like Pink Floyd!

The band will also perform on WXPN's "World Café Live" series October 8, and a video for Planet of Ice's "Knights" is in the can. And, of course, they're also playing on a nearly nightly basis in front of crowds in exchange for money. Subtle, Ela, and the Helio Sequence will provide support. [MORE...]

Led Zep Best Of, Remains DVD & Soundtrack Due
Got a whole lotta stuff

Led Zeppelin, repackaged and reissued? A Led Zep best of? Nah, it's nothing new. But there's plenty you haven't heard in new releases of The Song Remains the Same on DVD and its soundtrack album, and a lot to teach your kid brother or sister about the fine art of rockin' on the forthcoming greatest hits comp Mothership.

November 13, Mothership-- yet another hefty Led Zep best-of-- will see release on Atlantic Records/Rhino. It's got just about every song you'd expect, a few you'll miss (no "Lemon Song"?), and comes in a standard two-CD set, a "deluxe" version with a bonus live DVD, a "collector's edition"-- which seems to be the "deluxe" with limited-edition packaging-- and a four-LP vinyl edition complete with "collectible memorabilia" (sword? bong?).

Then there's The Song Remains the Same, Led Zep's totally weird, not-unfairly-maligned Tolkien fantasy/concert film. The new Atlantic/Rhino-issued Song soundtrack, out November 20, is actually rather different this time out, with a whole lotta tunes that didn't show up on its original release added. There's also some previously unreleased takes on Zep classics from the three-night Madison Square Garden run from which the original album was culled.

And what would a rollout of a soundtrack be without an accompanying DVD release? Song Remains the Same will get just that on November 20 on Warner Home Video. It features fully remixed and remastered 5.1 sound and 40 minutes of bonus material. There's also even more previously unreleased takes on Zep classics, a BBC sit-down with Robert Plant and manager Peter Grant, footage from the Drake Hotel robbery that took place during the shooting of the film's concerts, and a Cameron Crowe radio show. Ooh, Cameron Crowe!

The DVD will come in a standard format, Blu-ray, HD, and a two-disc "Limited Collector's Edition," which includes a t-shirt, the soundtrack, lobby cards, copies of the original invites to the film's debut, and the tour schedule from the Song run. [MORE...]

Feist/Bloc Party Remixer Boys Noize Preps Album, Tours

German electro up-and-comer (and Feist, Bloc Party, and Depeche Mode remixer) Alexander Ridha, aka Boys Noize, will enter into the tricky world of the electronic "artist album" with the release of his debut full-length, Oi Oi Oi. The album comes out in North America on September 25 via Turbo/Last Gang and on September 21, 24, and 26 in Germany, the UK, and France, respectively. The European release is on Ridha's own Boys Noize Records.

Boys' Forkcasted Feist remix closes out Oi Oi Oi, while single "& Down" is set to precede the album in August. Ridha also has a world tour to keep him busy from now until the end of October.

The next Boys Noize gig is tonight (July 27) in Bristol, England. [MORE...]

Photos: Deerhunter, Ladybug Transistor, Starlight Mints at Team Clermont Summer Festival [Athens, GA; 07/25-26/07]

Photos by Rich Merritt

PR firm Team Clermont commenced its 10th Annual Summer Festival and Blue Ribbon Ball in true Athens style, with local favorites Deerhunter playing the Caledonia Lounge yesterday. The Starlight Mints and Ladybug Transistor officially opened the festivities the day before at the 40 Watt Club, and photographer Rich Merritt was there to capture the action.

As you can see, it was such a special occasion that Bradford Cox actually wore a shirt and pants!

As previously reported, the festival will wrap up with a Pabst-sponsored Blue Ribbon Ball, which is apparently something akin to a high school prom (except the booze is presumably legal), hosted by Bobby Conn. Dates for the remainder of the festival are below.

M83 Issues Digital Shades, Works on New LP

Anthony Gonzalez of French shoelookers M83, with the help of Before the Dawn Heals Us co-producer Antoine Gallet, has gathered a number of home recordings and Eno-inspired ambience for a collection he's calling Digital Shades vol. 1. The accumulation of hazy sounds might not seem far off from your average M83 record, but Gonzalez' insistence on making measured moves in the studio and working at his own pace lend Digital Shades its gauzy, experimental vibe.

The Digital Shades project predicates another, perhaps more exciting M83 tidbit: Anthony cobbled the Digital Shades material together while in the studio working out on new, proper M83 album for release in January. Digital Shades will be released digitally September 3 on Gooom/EMI, and on CD and vinyl in France around the same time.

Thanks to Brad Honer for the heads up.

M83 also contributed new music to the HBO Voyeur Project. (Carlos D, Clint Mansell, and made some music for it, too.) You can download the pieces "Une Nuit Pour Nous" and "Je Doute et Je Crie" for free from iTunes now.

M83 presently have no tour dates scheduled.

Little Ones Play Gigs With Voxtrot, Kaiser Chiefs, 1990s

Despite their diminutive name, L.A.'s the Little Ones have one big tour planned, with dates stretching until the end of time (read: December).

The Little Ones' next gig goes down July 28 in Anaheim, where they'll open for Pinback. They will eventually share the marquee with quite a few others of note as well: Voxtrot, the Magic Numbers, 1990s, Kaiser Chiefs, and We Are Scientists. [MORE...]

Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's a Reissue

On October 29, Virgin Records will reissue the Sex Pistols classic Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols on vinyl, according to Billboard.com. It comes packaged with a poster and the one-sided 7" for "Submission". The reissue is meant to deliver the LP to fans just as it was when it was originally released back on October 29, 1977. Hey, that was exactly 30 years ago! Clever, clever.

As it was originally intended, your CD copy of Bollocks sticks "Submission" right smack in the middle of "Anarchy in the UK" and "Pretty Vacant". Billboard.com reports that the track was originally left off the first 50,000 copies of the LP, and was included as an insert, just like the reissue.

Their four classic singles "Anarchy in the U.K.", "God Save the Queen", Pretty Vacant", and "Holidays in the Sun" will also be reissued throughout October as seven inches, with their original artwork and B-sides. [MORE...]

Kings of Leon Tour With Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Go ahead and try to tell them apart in that picture

U.S. rokk heads: welcome to your Ozzfest. Sure, it's only two bands, but a Kings of Leon/Black Rebel Motorcycle Club tour is sure to be almost as full of guitars, beards, and black clothing as Ozzy's labor of love.

The RCA labelmates will hit the road together in September for a month and a half of shows, and they have quite a few dates separately as well. BRMC's tour continues tonight (July 27) in Östersund, Sweden, and the Kings pick up again in Minneapolis on August 2.

Both bands' new records, BRMC's Baby 81 and Kings of Leon's Because of the Times, are out now. [MORE...]
