Pitchfork Seeks Administrative Intern in NYC Office
The PBR of internships

Pitchfork Media is looking for some obnoxious hipster scum to beat up in the back alley of our New York City office. But more importantly, we're seeking an administrative intern. (Seriously, no mustaches.) The ideal candidate will be available 10-15 hours a week and have prior administrative experience. It'd be pretty great if you also have some general office experience and familiarity with business applications (you know, like Microsoft Office). A good presence on the phone and strong writing skills are mandatory. Tasks include, but are not limited to, coordinating schedules, shredding watermarked promos, and assisting all departments with daily operations as needed. Qualified applicants must submit a resume and cover letter to jobs@pitchforkmedia.com. Deadline is Friday, February 1 at 6:00 p.m. EST.

Photos: The King Khan and BBQ Show [Tel Aviv, Israel; 01/24/08]

Photos by Dania Heller

King Khan and BBQ Show invaded the Holy Land last week, rocking Tel Aviv on Thursday, January 24-- which also happened to be Khan's birthday. After performing at the studio of Tel Aviv's 106FM radio station, Khan and
Mark Sultan (with trademark Johnny Carson Carnac hat) headed to the Levontine club for the birthday bash. As you can see, Khan dressed up for the occasion. We just hope that's kosher BBQ they're serving.

More photos and a handful of Irish tour dates below.

Lekman, Glass, Ginsberg in Arthur Russell Documentary

One of the most singular music-makers of the modern era-- and almost certainly the most unique to emerge from Oskaloosa, Iowa-- the late Arthur Russell is the subject of a forthcoming documentary from filmmaker Matt Wolf.

Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell delves into the life of the maverick cellist and disco producer, who died of AIDS in 1992 at the age of 40. To help paint a complex portrait of Russell, Wolf interviewed several of those who knew Russell during his lifetime-- including Philip Glass, Allen Ginsberg, and Ernie Brooks (The Modern Lovers), as well as Russell's parents and partner Tom Lee.

Those inspired by Russell appear as well, including Jens Lekman (pictured below) and Electrelane's Verity Susman-- both of whom contributed tracks to Lekman's recent Arthur Russell tribute EP-- along with Russell-reissuing Audika Records' chief Steve Knutson.

The Berlin International Film Festival will play host to Wild Combination's premiere on February 13, 14, and 15. Look for it at Greece's Thessaloniki Documentary Festival in March as well.

Thanks to reader Abraham Raúl Araujo Díaz for the tip.

Photos: Girl Talk / Dan Deacon [Chicago, IL; 01/26/08]

Photos by Joseph Mohan

Things got a little sweaty at Chicago's Metro this past weekend as the globetrotting dynamic duo of Girl Talk and Dan Deacon whipped up their respective furious blends of chart top mashups and bonkers cartoon jams.

Deacon, hoisting his trippy green skull into the air, converted the sizable rock venue into a giant dance party; Girl Talk kept it going and was joined on stage by dozens of admiring fans. Unfortunately, this weekend marked the last of Gregg and Dan's joint dates for now, but they're both still touring separately, so check below to see if they'll be heading in your direction.

Rivers Cuomo Plays in Celebrity Charity Soccer Game
Kicks balls with Andy Samberg, Tony Hawk, Carlos Mencia, Mia Hamm, Nomar Garciaparra

It may seem slightly incongruous to imagine nerd king Rivers Cuomo of Weezer sliding into cleats and bicycle kicking his way onto a soccer field next to professional athletes, Carlos Mencia, and that "Extreme Makeover" guy with the frosted tips. But hey, charity makes people do funny things from time to time.

Cuomo took to the field at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California Saturday afternoon (January 26) for the Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra Celebrity Soccer Challenge. Yep, the guy from Weezer. The one in the sweater, with the butterfly!

Still, score one for Team Geek, quite literally: According to ESPN.com, Cuomo netted his team's first goal. Rivers told ESPN, "It was a dream come true. Passing with [the L.A. Galaxy's] Landon Donovan and going against [former soccer pro] Mia Hamm -- it's just unreal. I was terrified, but I was so excited that the excitement overcame the terror."

Who's that funky dude staring back at you now, Rivers? It's all you, buddy! GOOOOOALLLLLL!!!

Cuomo's team was coached by the L.A. Dodgers' Garciaparra and also included skateboarding video game mogul/occasional skater Tony Hawk, actor Anthony LaPaglia, comedian Carlos Mencia, former pitcher Jim Abbott, and many others.

Alas, the ragtag bunch couldn't deliver the win, staying competitive throughout but losing late to a squad consisting of Hamm, Ty Pennington, Andy Samberg and Seth Meyers of "Saturday Night Live", baseball player Mike Lieberthal, actress Elisabeth Shue, actor Milo Ventimiglia, and others.

Win or lose, it was for a good cause, as proceeds from the event went to Children's Hospital Los Angeles via the Mia Hamm Foundation.

In other Weezer news, Rivers' Alone was just released, and the band will have a new album out eventually, though I wouldn't go trusting just any old website to tell you about it. However, this here website just posted an interview with Rivers by Pitchfork contributor Jason Crock, and believe me, it's worth a read.

Photos by William Joines

The Rose Center at New York City's American Museum of Natural History was overrun by Chicago natives this weekend, as hip-hop duo the Cool Kids joined all-smiles MC Kid Sister to open for Fool's Gold co-chief and turntablist extraordinaire A-Trak for the latest installment of the Flavorpill One Step Beyond concert series.

And as luck would have it, fellow Windy City native (and A-Trak collaborator) Kanye West even showed up to take the stage with his hometown pals-slash-nail salon cohorts. More photos and all these folks' tour dates below.

Modest Mouse, National Open R.E.M. Tour (Update: Now With Dates)

The April 1 release of R.E.M.'s Accelerate is only getting closer, and appropriately, word of a tour in its support has wasted no time in reaching the Pitchfork News desk. Of course, a new R.E.M. tour is exciting in and of itself, but it turns out we have even more to look forward to than originally expected.

The opening acts on the tour will be Modest Mouse and the National, according to a Billboard.com report confirmed by representatives of R.E.M. and Modest Mouse. What a triple bill!

The exact dates of the tour have yet to be announced, but until they are, we can content ourselves with the current schedules of R.E.M. and the National, both of whom have a few separate headlining and festival shows.

UPDATE: TOUR DATES BELOW! [MORE...]

David Yow Hospitalized, Qui Cancel Tour

Bad news from team Qui. Frontman David Yow (who you might also remember from such bands as the Jesus Lizard and Scratch Acid) was hospitalized Friday evening in Pittsburgh following a show at the Andy Warhol Museum. According to Qui's publicist, Yow suffered from a collapsed lung, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Unfortunately, due to Yow's recovery, Qui have been forced to cancel their upcoming tour dates, including a show in California and an upcoming European tour.

Bon Iver Adds Bonuses to For Emma
Like this sweet poster

Front page photo by Stacy Schwartz

The folks at Jagjaguwar are as excited about the February 19 release of Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago as we are, which makes sense, considering they are the ones releasing it. So the label has started taking pre-orders right here. What's more, there is a pair of extras involved.

First, anyone who pre-orders from the label will receive a large color poster [pictured above] with his/her copy of the record. Second, anyone who orders the album from iTunes will receive a bonus track called "Wisconsin".

There's also one more treat, non-musical in nature but totally free. Justin Vernon, the man behind Bon Iver, has started a blog called Creature Fear. Currently, its only post is a diary entry from the making of For Emma, but we're told that Vernon plans to update it regularly.

The Bon Iver touring machine is currently resting, but it will start up again in February and March for shows with Jagjaguwar/Dead Oceans family members Black Mountain and Phosphorescent. [MORE...]
