Juan Maclean, Booka Shade Remix Depeche's Gahan
Digitalism, Maps, T. Raumschmiere also appear on remix album

As a member of a danceable rock combo, Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan aims to rock our bodies as much as he pushes our pop buttons. Thus, he'll unleash a remix version of his second solo album, Hourglass, via Mute/Virgin on March 11.

Hourglass: Remixes collects remixes from the Juan Maclean, Booka Shade, Digitalism, Maps, T. Raumschmiere, Kap10Kurt, Onur Ozer, and Sebastien Leger. The compilation is a vinyl-only release accompanied by a "bonus" CD that contains the full album plus three bonus tracks. Also, it will only be available at independent music stores; thinkindie.com has the list of retailers. [MORE...]

Sally Shapiro Reveals Remix Romance Details
And look who's on it: Junior Boys, Juan Maclean, Lindstrom, Holy Fuck

As promised, Sally Shapiro will continue spreading the love found on last year's Disco Romance with a remix album packed with offerings from other people we like to get excited about. As also promised, Junior Boys and Lindstrøm are among those people, tackling "Jackie Jackie (Spend This Winter With Me)" and "Time to Let Go", respectively.

Also dishing out the rejiggered Sally tracks: Juan Maclean, Holy Fuck, the Cansecos, Skatebård, and more. It all adds up to Remix Romance Vol. 1, invading record shops and lovesick hearts near you April 15 via Paper Bag Records. Ooh, does this mean there will be a Vol. 2??

In other Sally news, Permanent Vacation and Diskokaine have paired to unleash a hyper-limited white label version of that forthcoming "Jackie Jackie" single. Only 80 of these things exist, and they're available now via the Clone webstore. Permanent Vacation will unload the official "Jackie Jackie" single in Europe later this month, with a North American release to follow in April.

Finally, Sally and producer/songwriter Johan Agebjörn have added two dates to their unlikely DJ outing. A February 9 record release party in Gothenburg will mark Shapiro's first public appearance ever, while both will be on-hand at the PLUG Awards March 6, appearing in an as-yet-undetermined capacity. If there is a God, that capacity will of course be the receiving of an award. [MORE...]

Holy Fuck Remixed by No Age on New Single
Add UK dates, give us an excuse to curse a lot

Holy Fuck, the Canadian instrumental collagist troupe/frequent remixers of things/pottymouths, will be remixed by L.A. rabble-rousers No Age on their latest single. (Seems like it should be the other way around, no?)

Radiohead fave "Lovely Allen", culled from last year's great LP LP, will see release on 7" and 12" in the UK April 7 on Young Turks. The 7" includes the original track and a studio version of "Super Intuit", while the 12" gives you four very lovely "Allen"s, with Minotaur Shock and Riton joining Mr. Spunt and Mr. Randall in fucking around with Holy Fuck.

As for these Fuckers, well, they may find themselves gorging on one of Rachael Ray's many casseroles at SXSW. Whether or not that little taste of insanity goes down, though, they've got dates aplenty with fellow sonic gourmands Super Furry Animals and A Place to Bury Strangers. They've also added a brief UK tour in April since we last check in on 'em. Pardon my French, but Holy Fuck is that a lotta dates. [MORE...]

Diplo Preps Many a Mad Decent Release, Tours
Diplo EP, collaborations with Santogold and Benzi brewing

Quite a few days have passed since we last peeked under the many hats Diplo wears, so consider this story right here your one-stop Diplo digest dispatch. At least until the next week or so, when dude does ten dozen more things.

Diplo the happening DJ guy will, as previously reported, take to the road with Justice and some other happening folks beginning in March. Before that, however, he has two Canadian engagements and a trio of gigs in the American Midwest, a region that can never have enough opportunities to dance.

Diplo the happening label-running guy, meanwhile, has mad quantities of new releases in the works for his Mad Decent imprint. Where do we even begin? Well shit, how about here: there's the "Shake It to the Ground" remix EP from Blaqstarr and The Mix Up EP from South Rakkas Crew, both due February 19. South Rakkas crew also unleash the "Mad Again" 12" in March.

Beyond that we can look forward to a new 12" EP from Diplo himself in April, Blow Your Head, as well as a couple Diplo pair-ups. Fear and Loathing in Hunts Vegas brings together Diplo, A-Trak, Flosstradamus, Benzi, and others with Alabama's Paper Route Recordz crew in April, while an as-yet-untitled mix from Diplo and Santogold should also emerge soon. The Paper Route collaboration will be heralded by a "Rollin" 12" due in February. Finally, watch out for a Diplo-produced twelve from Baltimore teen rapper Ms Streemz, "Watch Dem Broads", in March.

Diplo the kinda sorta rather prolific remixer guy, finally, is at it again. Most recently he reworked a track by multinational quintet Sunny Day Sets Fire. The Mad Decent remix of "Brainless" will appear on SDSF's Stranger/Remix EP, due February 26 on I Am Sound Records. [MORE...]

Dean & Britta Drop Remix EP, Wareham Writes Memoir

Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips can add a few extra ampersands to the Dean & Britta moniker with Rounder Records' digital release of the Variations EP on January 29. The EP features a selection of tracks from last year's Back Numbers and one extra tune, "Song of You", remixed by producer Tony Visconti, My Robot Friend, Sonic Boom, and Phillips herself, among others.

Physical copies of Variations will be available on the duo's previously reported North American tour with Keren Ann, which kicks off February 7 in Boston.

A couple weeks after the tour ends, the Penguin Press will publish Black Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance. The book is Wareham's memoir of his time in both Luna and Galaxie 500, and it hits shelves March 17. Can't stand the wait? Check out an excerpt in the February issue of Men's Vogue or online right here. [MORE...]

Sally Shapiro Tours! Remixed by Junior Boys, Lindstrom
Shapiro lines up DJ dates with Johan Agebjorn

If hell's feeling a mite chilly today and you swear your swine are jumping a little higher than usual, well, know that Sally Shapiro, elusive disco chanteuse known to eschew her public, has just announced her very first live appearances. You read that correctly: Sally Shapiro is touring.

With young dreamers around the globe afflicted with a bad case of Disco Romance, Shapiro and producer Johan Agebjörn have agreed to spend this winter with but a few extraordinarily lucky North American cities. Their tiny but oh-so-welcome DJ tour kicks off March 4 in Toronto and wraps a couple gigs later in Chicago. Is this DJ jaunt a baby step toward a full-blown Shapiro stage show? That, my friends, remains to be seen.

And that's hardly all that's astir in camp Shapiro of late. In addition to Agebjörn's previously reported "Spacer Woman From Mars" 12", Sally Shapiro has another twelve in the works. "Jackie Jackie (Spend This Winter With Me)" lands overseas in February via Permanent Vacation, with a North American release to follow in April. In addition to "Jackie" (a Nixon cover taken from the North American edition of Disco Romance), the single includes another ace Shapiro track and two remixes-- including an offering from the one and only Junior Boys.

The Junior Boys remix will in fact appear on a forthcoming album of such reworkings titled Remix Romance. Paper Bag Records plans to unleash Remix this spring, and Lindstrøm is also expected to partake.

Finally, let's not forget that Sally is up for a couple PLUG Awards. You know what to do. [MORE...]

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arctic Monkeys Remix the Hives
Hives announce world tour

Congrats are in order for the Hives, who just this week picked up a Grammi-- the Swedish equivalent of our Grammys, duh-- for "best live act". And congrats to concertgoers the world over for getting a whole mess of chances to check out Sweden's finest show-givers on their recently announced world tour. Come Valentine's Day, the Hives hit Mexico, and for three weeks, they'll boldly go where many a fine live act before them has gone before: the U.S. and Canada. Following a couple weeks for Howlin' Pelle to rest those howlin' pipes, the band will give Europe and the UK about a month of their time.

Support for the U.S. and Canada shows comes from the Donnas. The Hives and the Donnas are on tour together? Hello, 2002!

And if you're looking to get in a little arts and crafts action with these awrd-winning Swedes, now's your chance. The band is asking fans to submit artwork for the forthcoming single for The Black and White Album's "We Rule the World (T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S.)", which emerges from Polydor on a limited-edition 10" single in the UK February 25.

Even non-creative sorts can enjoy the "Rule the World" single, as it'll include remixes of the track from Matt Helders of the Arctic Monkeys and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner. [MORE...]

Amplive Nixes Radiohead Remixes at Warner's Demand
Amplive to Radiohead: "Thom, holler at me, man."

Recall wayyyy back in 2007 when we told you about Rainydayz Remixes, the record of Radiohead In Rainbows reworkings put together by Oakland DJ and producer Amplive? The one with Too $hort on it? Sounded pretty cool, and cooler still, Amplive was all set to release it next week using a revolutionary pricing model we like to call FREE.

Was, because one faux-polite cease-and-desist letter later, Amplive won't be able to put this thing out without unleashing the legal wrath of Warner/Chappell, Radiohead's longtime publisher.

On December 18, Amplive received a missive from Warner/Chappell informing him that he had "created musical arrangements / remixes" without proper "approval" and must cease distribution of them at once. Rather than tangle with these suits and their armies of lawyers, Amplive has agreed to suspend the project for the time being.

He did, however, express hope that members of Radiohead would hear his remixes and help him gain approval. Radiohead themselves, of course, most likely had nothing to do with the cease-and-desist letter. Check out what Amplive had to say in both a video message and a written statement (reprinted in full below).

"I really feel if Radiohead's team was able to hear these...remixed songs," writes Amplive, "they would feel differently." Amplive also calls upon others who have posted his remixes-- which he acknowledges as "illegal"-- to remove them for now.

Amplive maintains that his remix project is intended as a "celebration" of one of his favorite records, and that would seem consistent with the fact that 1.) it's free, and 2.) he was only going to share it with folks who had supported Radiohead in the past in some fashion via W.A.S.T.E. or donated to Radiohead-approved organization Friends of the Earth.

No word yet what the producer will have to do to gain this elusive "approval" (something tells me it involves $$$), but here's hoping all parties involved can reach some kind of agreement where art-- not profit or bureaucratic malarkey-- prevails. [MORE...]

Yorke Preps 12"s With Field, Four Tet, Burial Remixes
And also Various, Modeselektor, Surgeon, and Christian Vogel Remixes

Lonely? Looking for love? Good thing it's singles day all up in here at Pitchforkmedia.com today, eh? And our de facto tribute to the shortest-playing of formats continues right now with the announcement of a newly-pressed series of three-songers from Thom Yorke, due early next year.

Wait a minute, Thom Yorke? Didn't that guy's solo album come out in, like, 2006? It sure did, but that hasn't stopped XL Recordings from preparing a trio of slick new 12"s collecting remixes of assorted tracks off The Eraser. Bearing the clunky but informative titles "And It Rained All Night (Burial Remix) / Skip Divided (Modeselektor Remix) / Analyse (Various Remix)", "Atoms for Peace (Four Tet Remix) / Black Swan (Christian Vogel Remix 1) / Black Swan (Christian Vogel Remix 2)", and "Harrowdown Hill (The Bug Remix) / The Clock (Surgeon Remix) / Cymbal Rush (The Field Remix)", the 12"s contain, well, precisely that. Look for them in UK shoppes beginning January 21, January 28, and February 4, respectively.

Oh, and if a few of these remixes sound familiar, perhaps you downloaded them off Yorke's site one whole year ago this week.

In related news, some band involving Yorke did something something tour blah blah Rainbows etc. [MORE...]

Diplo Remixes Spoon's "Don't You Evah" for Charity

Spoon's "Don't You Evah", from their fine Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga LP, has a nice little swing to it, sure. But leave it to Diplo to crank up the bottom end in just about anything he touches, even a straight-ahead rock track from a bunch of tightly-wound Texans.

Diplo's crafted a remix of "Don't You Evah" which the Merge Records digital store is selling this very moment. All proceeds from sales of the tune go to the Texas Criminal Justice Coalition, an organization that advocates fair practices within Texas courts.

When they're not matching wits for a good cause, Spoon and Diplo are out on the road. (Not together.) Both have but a handful of dates over the next few months. And Spoon presently have a poster signed by the band up on eBay as part of Merge's previously reported charity project. [MORE...]

Too $hort(!) Contributes to In Rainbows Remix Record

Oakland DJ and producer Amplive (of Zion I) is a big Radiohead fan, which is odd considering the band hasn't released anything since 2003's Hail to the Thief. Psych! They totally put out this record called In Rainbows that basically invented God, made time travel possible, and brought the Orange Julius back to previously unimaginable heights of popularity.

Anyway, Amplive was such a fan of In Rainbows that, unlike most of us, he actually did something about it. He created an eight-track (but not like that) remix record called Rainydayz Remixes, featuring collaborations with Too $hort, his Zion I partner Zion, and others. Yep: Radiohead and Too $hort, together at last.

On January 10, Amplive will release the online-only album for free as a .zip file with 320 kbps mp3s and high-resolution artwork, but to get your digital hands on it, there's a bit of a catch. You need to forward any email from Radiohead's W.A.S.T.E. online store (like but not at all limited to the ones confirming the purchase of In Rainbows) to amplive@onesevensevensix.com. It's fairly simple, but a little tricky, especially considering that the In Rainbows download option ends December 10. Better hop on the free train while you still can, folks!

Devin the Dude + France + Architecture in Helsinki = !?
So, a rapper and some indie rockers walk into a French club...

So, where to begin with this one? Let's start with Devin the Dude. Know the guy? He likes his weed, in case you hadn't heard, and he put out one of 2007's best rap LPs, Waitin' to Inhale. Seems Devin has also been spending some time in France (perhaps en route to Amsterdam?), or at least jamming to some French club fare. That might explain why he's hooked up with Paris-based party starter and TTC member Teki Latex to record a track "presented by" NYC trio 33Hz.

While they were at it, 33Hz also enlisted a regular rogue's gallery of remixers, including Architecture in Helsinki, Curtis Vodka, Gentlemen Drivers, Max Pask, and In Flagranti to rework the track. So, hip-hop act? Check. Dance/electronic act? Check. Indie rock act? With Architecture, checkeroony. As far as genres we at Pitchfork fill our pages with go, this is like hitting for the cycle.

And the track? It's called "Paris, Texas". Yep, like the city and the movie and the pop punk band. It's out now in CD, 12", and 7" formats thanks to Brooklyn's Dither Down imprint. Let the mash-ups begin.
